Subject: Render Speed: To disk vs. On screen

Well I was doing some renderings and noticed and odd time difference. So I did test to see the difference between rendering to disk vs. rendering to screen.

I loaded the standard Lancaster plane model(that comes with Vue) and centered it on the screen. I set it to render at 640x480 at final quality. I know, not very big of a test but that is all I had time for. :) Anyway, here are the results.

Render to disk: 1min 34sec
Render to screen: 53sec

Now that is not that big of a deal when you look at it, but it does explain a render I was working it. It was a very big scene with fancy poser figures. I never let it finish rendering but the estimate to disk after 30 mins into the render was 3hrs. But I stopped it and rendered it to screen and it was done in 1 1/2 hours.

Has anybody else tested this out to see if they too are noticing a very large difference in render times?

I just performed the exact same test with the lancaster plane and a very simple scene. It took 31 seconds to render to screen at 640x480, and 1 min. 10 sec. to render to disk. I have also tried to render large images to disk, but have never thought to compare the two until now. I think Ill stick to rendering on screen. hope this helps..

I never rendered to disk before, I allways want to see whats happening , so if something appears I dont like ,i can take some action. But never thought ther was so much difference. Whit a very long rendertime I let it do the work while I,m sleeping. regards Maria

biggest reason it slows down on render to disk is cause its saving it on disk as it goes so if u have slow hd speeds could affect it some

This has been a pet bitch of mine for a long time, and I've brought it up several times in the past. Quite frankly, it shouldn't take longer to render to disk than to screen for three reasons: 1. I have several other 3D programs. None of them is slower writing to disk than to screen. 2. When rendering to disk, Vue doesn't have to worry about driving the video screen...constantly updating it to reflect the new rendered state. Because of this, Vue should be faster rendering to disk, not slower! 3. As far as I understand, even when you render to screen, Vue makes a temp file on your hard drive in order to allow you to do a "continue render". Have you ever noticed that Vue calculates render time differently for disk renders than it does for screen renders? On a screen render, Vue calculates the render time, and when finished, it anti-aliases the picture and calculates the anti-alias time. When through with that, Vue gives you the overall time it took for the anti-aliased render. When rendering to disk, Vue calculates the "overall time" to render AND anti-alias the picture. It doesn't treat rendering and antialiasing as two separate processes. It makes me wonder if Vue uses a different process to render to disk... -SMT

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

This is a point we have already in our wishlist:-) Guitta

Hmm. Short question: gives render-to-disk the ability to continue an interrupted render? I never tried that setting out. At any rate, that's another feature I'd like to see in Vue5 should it not be available already now . . . adds point to wish list ta, -Sascha.rb

DoH! Guess I should read that wish list. :) Thanks for the responses though all. :) Glad to know that it isn't just something messed up on my system. :)
