you know what would be the best thing for p6? having splines implemented, so you only have one basic spline figure and if you want detail, then simply apply some displacement image that should define the details. it would be just the question of a black and white picture that everyone could deal with and make. everyone could make their own figures without the need of buying vickys or mikes. plus the morphs would be as easy to make as painting in photoshop.
PoseRay, the Poser to POVRay app has a displacement mappimg feature that uses an image to displace an obj which you can save. Looks OK for gross changes, but I don't know about creating fancy characters.

Displacement mapping is also great for making ripples and waves. You can often animate the displacement and make things like billowing capes. If you watch a movie where they show a wall or a stomach and make it bulge out like there is an alien or hand or something stretching through it, that was possibly done with displacement maps.
