I don't want to come off sounding like a troll but as someone who recently posted a work in progress here (Life After Death), hoping to get some constructive critisism I'm somewhat amused by these recent threads and the catagorising of some images as "McDonald's Art". I can't help but wonder if mine perhaps was one of the images being referred to. Since I only received one reply to my request I'm inclined to believe that perhaps my images aren't good enough to be posted here, or that I'm doing something so wrong that it's not even worth replying to.

Maybe I've just had to much coffee this morning.

In any case, I just want to thank those who do take the time to share their art, criticisms and advice. It is appreciated.

sometimes you get replies sometimes you don't.I'v never found any correlation - don't take it personally.Posting anything here is a bit like having a market stall - good days and bad. we are humans and as such look inside for the problem and its probably not there.Jusy keep trying

thanks for the words of wisdom. I do tend to let things get to me more than they should at times. It just struck me odd that a post about criticisms got so many replies and those who ask for criticisms get but a few.

Or it could be that the suggestions given in that one reply is what everyone else agreed with as well and instead of repeating the same thing we figured you got your answer. Don't feel bad, lots of my pics don't get comments either. :)

I, for one, comment on works that inspire me to say something. I've only once given polite, but negative, criticism because I wanted to see the piece improved. It was a great work, but had one very glaring problem that I thought needed to be addressed in it's text. The unfortunate result though was the person pulled the picture, greatly dismaying me because I did like to look at it. Usually my comments are encouragment, suggestions or questions for that artist though. I also see a LOT of images that I like but I don't comment on because I don't feel moved to say anything. At least I increase the view-count on the image even if I don't say anything. IMHO

I remember your wip (the pyramids, right?) One of the members had replied giving suggestions, and I couldn't think of anything they hadn't alreday mentioned. I guess that's more of a lame reason and not really an excuse as to not saying something at all. :o/ AgentSmith

I've looked at lots of images, and some I feel, don't need any criticism, some do, but most of all, the amount of viewings will tell you volumes. If you have alots of viewings and only one comment, you must be doing something right, or no one would take the time to view it in the first place...be patient, you'll get comments, but be careful what you wish for, you may get it...:) Zhann

Sometimes I see an image and know what to say about it and if the user asks comments I'll give them most of the time, but it happens that for some reason I can't think of a comment at all or one that makes sence and hasn't been mentioned yet by someone else. Sometimes an image speaks to me sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes I feel that my style and my ideas just don't fit the image and that my suggestions would not make the image better at all. One problem I have is that I sometimes don't know how to express myself in english. As a result of that my comment sounds to agressive and I don't post it because the way I say it might hurt peoples feelings. But one thing is for certain: Every image anyone makes is good enough to post on the forum. It doesn't matter how crappy or professional it is. If it's your creation and you feel the need to share it with others you can always post it.

Rayraz, you first language is not english? Surprise, surprise. Fooled me. I wonder if there are versions of Bryce in other languages? Actually, thinking of it I have seen screen shots of Bryce that were in German. I sometimes wonder what member is from where, or even if they are male or female. Hard to go off just a screen name.

Sometimes it's difficult for the person giving the critique to know what stance to take. If the poster of the image is just out to produce a nice picture and wonders what people think, then an in-depth critique is OTT and will sound misplaced, pompous and possibly even rude. Then again, if someone is struggling with a piece he wants to submit for an important competition, say, or is trying to get his work published, then "nice pic, like the alien" is not really helpful and might even sound patronising. A few months ago I used to comment on maybe 20, 25 or more images a day in the galleries. I got a lot of thanks for it by way of IMs, emails, etc, but I also sensed that a lot of times people posted without a great desire to improve, but more just to share their art, and may have been a little taken aback when I started banging on about POV, FOV, DOF and TIR amongst other things. Which is great, but how to tell the difference? A point in case - and I sincerely hope he won't mind me saying this - is dontatro's work. I for one love his pictures as they are tremendously varied and thought-provoking, but I don't believe Don posts them in order to get critique on composition or colour balance but just to entertain people, which they certainly do. I don't know what the solution is for this, other than some sort of "flag" against images saying what type of critique the artist prefers. Maybe this is over-the-top, I don't know, just a suggestion????

When I think my english doesn't sound right I don't post it. (Good way to hide my lack of some parts of the english language.) On the other hand my english teacher hates me for doing nothing during the english lessons and still getting good grades. Glad you don't notice english isn't my first language AgentSmith. I always try to be as bilingual as I can. I also understand quite a bit of german, but speaking is still hard. I don't get a f*ck of french (although I have had french for 5 years at school). I can understand spanish better even without having any spanish lessons. Tuttle: You can always comment on my immages. I always want to bet better.

This is very intersting... I have been thinking the same stuff and i try not to comment others images.. the reason: i think some people r not ready to get bad feedback, i mean they wait only for good. I would be very happy to hear from my images some bad sides also so i can improve them. This was the first think that came into my mind.Then i made my mind not to give comments( ok sometimes i dont keep this rule) The other point is. Am i the right one to give advice to an other artist to imrove some stuff in their image? I think im not the one so i stay away. I hope people understand what i mean. I personally like getting constructive criticisms and comments! Sometimes I get too into an image to see a small flaw (or a big one (grin)) and I really do appreciate a polite pointer about it. bring em on please!

All of my images whether posted here or at my website are always open to critisism, in my opinion it's the only way I'll learn and improve my skills ... learning from others. Thanks to everyone who's posted to this thread. I've gained quite a bit of insight and will be more patient in the future.

And hey AS, my first language isnt English either! And how does one know that one of these images is not being submitted by a Martian???? Would Turing apply here too? Was just wondering! BTW. AS, your general knowledge (or at least whos who knowledge is fantastic!!!!) I do love all the critique thing happening. Its good for our Art and its good for our community! I like warm places too. I live in the Netherlands. Mostly a very wet place with rain, but the weather can be nice in the summer.

AgentSmith, I'm also a vanilla american, although years of Spanish class haven't completely worn off. Como esta? I had to laugh at myself the first time I visited Canada and did not get green money from the cash machine. For those of you with English as a second language, it really doesn't show. If it's any consolation, my brother, after years of living in Norway, has trouble remembering English words now. As for giving feedback, sometimes I think a picture could have more of an impact, but I don't know how to tell the artist what would give more impact, so I don't say anything. Other times, I'm not sure what effect/meaning the artist is going for, so I don't feel comfortable giving comments. I can just image the dialog: Me: I think you should brighten up the lighting, the picture seems kind of dark. Artist: It's supposed to convey a feeling of sadness. Me: Oh. What to do, what to do. :) How do you folks have time to look through, let alone comment on the galleries? Even with cable modem, I don't really have time to do more than read through this forum and add my little bits here and there. Lin
