just wanted to ask you what your thoughts were on this. I personally don't know how to explain or put it. I was high at the time ;)

Some thing dont need an explanation

you had an idea and went with it

Kind of looks like the gates to hell

Maybe some backgound or atmosphere?

Otherwise, very, very cool

draculaz ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 5:23 PM

thanks. I actually wanted to do a remake one of my first submissions to renderosity called l'esperance, but it got side-tracked. but the gates of hell.. that's actually a very interesting idea...

airflamesred ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 6:08 PM

does being 'high at the time' apply to your other recent postings?

draculaz ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 6:09 PM

nope, those were done in the completeness of my mental abilities :)

Lights are creating bars in the background, Looks great on the ground. maybe a negative light source near the back walls and/or top (not sure). or something to break up the the light falling directly on a surface. Great imagery and lighting, I love the center piece.

johnpenn ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 6:24 PM

From a purely realistic standpoint, I agree with ICM about the shadows on the sky dome. I also think the clouds on the horizon are a little small and awkward. They seem too regular. The ground texture is really nice, but I think it would do well with a bump map. The shadows give away it's flat nature. Also, when I look at the image, I can see that the braziers (I guess they're braziers) are the brighest light source because of their color, but the object in the center, the pedestal, is casting all the shadows. I should think that either the pedestal should be brighter or the braziers should be dimmer. The colors are very nice and earthy and the green sky is quite warming. Compositionally, pyramid shape is classic both and strong.

Other than the bars on the background that's been mentioned, looks pretty cool. The title that came into my mind was "Standing Judgement".

Everyones being very polite all of a sudden. As Chsis has pointed out the lights are shadowing the backdrop. What is holding up the lamp things?A perfectly drilled hole in the stone?.Altogether it looks like its been thrown together in 5 minutes.Jusy my opinion

draculaz ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 6:50 PM

first of all that's not a sky, it's a wall. :) second, i am perfectly aware of the shadows, and i know that the ground lacks a bump map. basically the image WAS put together in 5 minutes simply because I couldn't think of a way to put the 5 elements into something meaningful. i was hoping that someone might give me an idea. the gates of hell thing is just about perfect ;) as for the metal prods, they can fit into the ground very easily. drill. put in. drill. put in. btw, airflamesred, please drop the self-justified banter, okay?

Ah, but that is the joy of CG, reality has as little claim on it as it has on our imaginations. Aside from the lights cast on the skydome and the very abrupt horizon line, it is still a very interesting work, IMHO.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Suggest something to break the floor to wall (just missed your last post by seconds) transition then.

what i was thinking of doing is something like this: a remake, actually:

Incarnadine ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 8:26 PM

An interesting variation on a theme. Still I think I will stand by my suggestion as to a visual break to soften the floor to wall transition. (personal opinion)

absolutely, and i agree.

Apache2k ( ) posted Sun, 06 October 2002 at 9:40 PM

Nice concept, i would say some very low red-yellow fog ? And maybe a softshadow version of this? Apache2k

Zhann ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 2:20 AM

I like it alot, unusual coloring, the back wall looks fine to me. If the center figure is to claim prominence though, it should be brighter, slightly larger, braziers could be dimmer, and for mystery, maybe a luminenscent ground fog, this would also soften the horizon make it infinite so to speak...just suggestions... the overall feel is more like ascension... Perhpas then you should make the wall read like a wall, because you are confusing the viewer into thinking that it's a sky.

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 7:35 AM

isn't it neat? and it's a default texture too! :D I imagined it when it finally rendered as a scene in a theatre. That way the ground and wall could be explained.
