Subject: Help please with KPT7 and Photoshop 7?

Shosuro ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 12:37 PM · edited Wed, 06 November 2024 at 1:34 AM

Hello! I hope someone here can help; this is making me somewhat doolally. I've crossposted this to the Macintosh Compatibility forum as well. I've just installed Photoshop 7 on my G4. I have KPT 7, the installer for which includes carbonised versions of Kai's filters as well as classic ones. 'Well!' thinks me, 'Isn't that convenient! I can still use my favourite filters: just install the carbon version!' Well, as PS7 users already know, the plugin folder is different for PS7, and no matter in what I put the 'KPT Effects' folder the KPT 7 installer installs, I'm jut not seeing the filters when I launch Photoshop. As KPT 7 was released before PS7 (for things like Painter), there's no photoshop-specific information in the KPT readme file. I'm stumped. Can anyone give instructions detailed enough for a hamster-brain like myself to follow? I'll be forever grateful; I don't know what I'll do without FraxFlame. Just to clarify-- I have specified my old Photoshop 6's serial number in Photoshop 7's preferences. It hasn't helped so far. Thank you!

Sho, in the "Preferences" under Plug-Ins & Scratch Disks there is a little "check box" for an additional Plug-In Directory, have you pointed to your KPT plugins folder?

I use that for the same issue (well, not for KPT7...) and it worked for me.

let me know,
:)

Hmm-- okay. I point it to Applications/Adobe Photoshop 7.0/plug ins/filters/KPT Effects... choose. Quit Photoshop & restart... Nope, that didn't do it! Oh drat, it sounded like such a good suggestion. I wonder if the older carbon version is just incompatible with PS? Some more research indicates that an OSX specific version of KPT 7 was planned for release in the not too distant past, but I'm having difficulty accessing ProCreate's site to verify. M'mm. Gragfrscnazl! Thanks for your help. I hope I can get this working... I can always use it in PS6 under OS9, but PS7 is so nice! And new! And snazzy! Allright, I'll stop ranting now... :) Benedictions!

Try moving the KPT Effects (or make a copy of it) to a new directory and try pointing to that. I know it adds to HD clutter, but it might work...

Typically, a smart thing to do with Photoshop in any version is to leave the default filters in Photoshop's folder (i.e. where they are when you install), and put the third party filters in a different folder located somewhere else on the computer. Preferably a place where they'll be out of the way, but easy enough to find should you need to. This is what I do with my filters, and my version of KPT 3, 5, 6 & 7 all work just fine with PS7. You may need to remove KPT7 and reinstall to the new location you select. Another thing to consider is that some filters (I don't think KPT7 does this, but Corel does some goofy stuff these days), require the bonding to the particular copy of the program installed on your computer. If you've installed filters like this (Flaming Pear, Eye Candy, Panopticum...all good examples) then upgraded Photoshop, you need to give Photoshop 7 your old program's serial number. It's in the same place with the Plug-In's and Scratch Disks with the preferences, and it's called Legacy serial number. It's the serial number of your old version to wich all your third party filters were bonded so they think you still have the same program and continue to function like good little filters. At least one of these two solutions should work. If not, I'd be giving Corel tech support a shout, or even Customer service as you may have a defunct copy of the disks.

OK! I'll try these in the morning! Oyasumi nasai--

I see the problem unless you made a typo. The folder is called Plug-Ins not Plugins. I remember from past experience that some of the filters create a Plugins (which doesn't work). Re-install KPT7 in Plug-Ins. C:Program FilesAdobePhotoshop 7.0Plug-Ins

Good eyes dreamer, i always follow strict naming conventions (carry-over from programming days!) :) retrocity

Thanks Dreamer-- I did commit a typo there. I haven't renamed any folders since the squeaky clean install. :) Okay, here's what I've done: I made a new folder called Plug-Ins, and stuck that in my Applications folder. I trashed KPT7 and reinstalled it to this folder. Then under Photoshop's Plug-Ins and Scratch Disks preferences dialogue, I specified the new Plug-Ins folder additional plug-ins. Restart Photoshop. Alas, no joy! I think they just don't work in OSX. I can use these filters if I start Photoshop from within the Mac's Classic environment (effectively running it under OS9 in OSX) but it's sooooooooo slooooooooow when I do that. Ah well... there's always PS6 in OS9. Thanks!

Content Advisory! This message contains nudity, violence

I had problems with KPT in PS 7 but ran it fine in PS 6 it says wrong serial number, but it works fine running PS 6 with the add on? PS 7 seems to work differently with plug ins. So I just have to switch between the comp with PS 6 and then switch back to the comp with 7 on it. Lucky I have 2 comps I guess :(

Are you on PC or Macintosh, Clickframe?

seanmichael ( ) posted Sat, 12 October 2002 at 1:27 AM

I did not know that KPT 7 was available.....from the messages here it appears that it updates the older kpt filters for use in photoshop 7....Where does one obtain this update?.....seanmichael

Strangechilde ( ) posted Sat, 12 October 2002 at 6:35 AM

There's an update, yes! Huzzah! Not being able to get into ProCreate's site first off (it thought I didn't have a good enough Flash player, which I do, which confused me, but it worked from another browser) in the 'Updates' section at the above link, there's the following: KPT effects update This update addresses only Adobe Photoshop 7 compatibility for the Mac. There are no other updates for either Windows or Macintosh versions. Seanmichael, this will only update KPT7, not older KPT filters.
