the "dictionary meaning" Message671426.jpg SYLLABICATION: apophysis PRONUNCIATION: -pf-ss NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. apophyses (-sz) 1. Anatomy A natural swelling, projection, or outgrowth of an organ or part, such as the process of a vertebra. 2. Geology A branch from a dike or vein. ETYMOLOGY: New Latin, from Greek apophusis, from apophuein, to send out branches : apo-, apo- + phuein, to grow; see bheu- in Appendix I. OTHER FORMS: apophysate (-st) , apophyseal (-sl) ADJECTIVE as for the fractal meaning, if you have UF, or UltraFractal go to the website and check out this page (use link..http://www.fractalus.com/cheshirecat/gall35.htm), it seems to be an additional add-in for UF I had to download it, makes some nice and interesting forms. but basically it seems to be the "out growth" edges of the fractal or its branches. Apart from that I could not tell more, I am new at this also, and hope this helps. Xeno

Apophysis is a program I wrote for generating and editing IFS and Flame fractal parameters. To use it (the way it's been used forimages posted to the fractal gallery) you need Ultra Fractal 3.0 and Erik Reckase's Flame Fractals coloring algorithm (which is in the Ultra Fractal formula database). The help file explains what to do after that.

Thanks for the reply. I have a few more questions, so please be patient with me, lol. Am I limited to the Advanced Gnarl formula? Will the masks work? I am currently evaluating UF3, and have not done all that much fractal art, so some of the mechanics of the programs are a bit confusing to me at first. I did get a recognizable flame the last night, but it was quite small to begin, but when I enlarged it, it was nice, however, it was on a black background, and some of the subtleties were lost. Can you change the background color? I'm sure these are all second nature to you, lol. Thanks for any tips.

  • Am I limited to the Advanced Gnarl formula? The Flame Fractals coloring should be used on the Pixel formula (the one that Apophysis puts in its UPRs by default). There's no point using any other formula. - Will the masks work? They should. - but when I enlarged it, it was nice, however, it was on - a black background, and some of the subtleties were - lost. Increase the Iter Desnity parameter of the Flame Fractals formula to increase detail. - Can you change the background color? There's a Background Color parameter in the formula. You can't change the background color in Apophysis.

I recently installed Windows 2000. Previously I had Windows 98, 2nd Edition and at that time Apophysis worked fine. Now it will open but when I click the icon to work with the program, the entire program shuts down. I am extremely puzzled. I have even uninstalled it and re-installed it a couple times. Any help would be appreciated.

Apophysis simply refuses to run on some systems and I'm afraid it's not within my powers to fix this at the moment. Up until now I thought it was a hardware problem. The only thing I can suggest is that you try running the program in Windows 98 combatability mode. I think Windows 2000 might have this feature (right click on the program in Explorer and select Poperties to look for it).

Thank you very much, Mark, for your response. I will certainly give it a try. I did not know such a capability was possible. Marion
