Subject: Mac OS X 10.2 and P4 in Classic Mode

greenbd ( ) posted Thu, 17 October 2002 at 9:43 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 8:36 PM

Hello, When I upgraded to Mac OS 10.1, it was great for working with Poser because the protected memory allowed me to use other apps while rendering, opening files, etc. in Poser. Now that I've upgraded to Jaguar, using Poser in Classic mode once again locks up the computer whenever the foot-tapping cursor is on. I can't command-tab or Dock my way out of Poser anymore. Has anyone else had this problem, or figured out a way around it?

Maybe Jaguar is using more memory than 10.1 did? Could you give it a try with onlyposer and normal system things rinning and see what happens.

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.

Have you downloaded and installed the update (10.2.1)? This supposedly solves some of the 'Classic' mode problems inflicted by 10.2. ;) Also, check the Apple forums under Mac OS X for similar problems (with Classic mode apps under 10.2) as there may be more specific solutions than I can give. Yes, it's 10.2.1, and I have 512MB of RAM, so that's not a problem. I just checked the process manager, and I appear to have at least 100MB free. I haven't asked about it yet at the Apple forums, but will wander over there now.

I have posted some of this before. I read in the knowledge base or something like that in some info somewhere that if you are having a problem running some programs in "classic mode" you should go to OS 9.2.2 or whatever you are using and in the "extensions manager" switch to "basic mode". I had this problem and it seemed to solve it. Some people said it does not work doing this and others said it helped. I know it did for me. You might want to try it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jayhawk. I selected the OS 9.2.2 Basic extension set and restarted Classic, but it's still doing the same thing. Reducing Poser's preferred memory setting didn't help either. Another weird thing that Poser's been doing ever since I installed Jaguar is, when I'm using my Graphire tablet, it seems to shift the usable screen area for the cursor a few pixels to the right. You know how usually part of the cursor is hidden when you move it to one side of the screen, but you can't move it all the way off? Well, using my Graphire stylus in P4, the cursor now stops a few pixels short of the left edge of the screen, and goes all the way off the right edge. What's up with that? Though OS 10.2 is better in some areas, I think it's really devolved in application-switching ability. In 10.1, when cmd-tabbing between applications, you could just hit the shift key while holding down the apple key to go back. Now that does nothing, and you have to use all three keys (cmd-shift-tab) to go backwards. On the plus side, however, its new preference for cmd-tabbing to the last-used app rather than the next item in the dock is nice.

Sorry it didn't help Greenbd. I don't use a tablet so I can't make any suggestions there at all. Don't use the key commands much either. I assume your tablet is USB. Did you try unplugging it and after a minue or so, plug it back in. I have seen some of the USB peripherals start working properly again after doing that. Remember, these are only suggestions that I'm making. I am no expert by any means. One thought...did you run "disk first aid"? Check to see if your "permissions" are OK. After I installed 10.2.1, mine were all screwed up. While you are at it let it check your whole hard disk. It takes a few minutes to do this but it might be worth the time. Best to run this off of the boot disk. (OSX10.2) Good luck! Let me know if it helps.
