THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: What do you do whilst you're rendering?

Darkginger ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 10:21 AM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 3:02 AM

OK, I started playing with Poser horses in Bryce this morning - managed to get something together that I quite liked, and set it off to render. Here I sit, several hours later, having tidied the house, done the washing up, poured a couple of whiskey and cokes, smoked more cigarettes than I should have, browsed through most of the 'Osity galleries, downloaded some freebies, played with the dogs...and it's STILL only 28% anti-aliased! Arrgghh! So, what do YOU do while your pics are rendering? I'm bored stooopid at this point... just hope the result is worth it (and there's already some bits I want to go back and change, but I'm no way going to wait for it to render AGAIN!). Just call me impatient...

cshaftoe ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 11:23 AM

Sleep........start the render overnight and go to bed.

nuski ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 11:44 AM

I agree with cshaftoe. . . . I also may begin a rendering in the morning before I go to work. . . . this allows about 10 hours of rendering time before I come home.

ttops ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 12:01 PM

Yep, I also start the render just when I'm about to go to bed. And when I wake up hopefully it's finished. I've also got a PC just for rendering, but I use that one for multiple frames rendering animations. The longest multiple frames I rendered took 5 days. But since then I learned not to render more than 300 frames at any given time.

Well, the image in question has finally finished rendering. This is it. I would welcome comments on it - it needs postwork on the manes, I know, and I was thinking that some blades of grass would help. Unfortunately, because I got so bored waiting for the render to finish, I drank far too much whiskey, and all attempts at postwork on manes etc are impossible right now! Will have a go tomorrow, if I get a chance - people coming for dinner..arrghh...

Colette1 ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 1:56 PM

I do the same thing you described. clean house do dishes, etc.. I have also rendered images over night while sleeping, but as I go to bed very late and get up very early that doesn't leave too much time...lOL I only sleep maybe 4-5 hours a day and that is only wen necessary. I play Slingo sometimes or work on my crafts for vraft sales to earn extra money, or work out in the garden..I guess I do just about whatever needs to be done...LOL

Peej ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 2:00 PM

For the future: keep old computers, network together into a little render farm, let them render while your main computer plays with you.

tjohn ( ) posted Sat, 19 October 2002 at 2:51 PM

I've done most of the things mentioned, but sometimes just stare stupidly at the screen while it's rendering one line at a time. Actually, that has a relaxing, meditative, sort of zen quality to it. :^)

Answer questions in the Bryce forum, and scan any other forum that doesn't have an active Mod. Scan the Bryce gallery for violations (rarely happens). Scan Freebies for dead links, etc. And, do all that secret Willie Wonks stuff in the Mod Forum that I can't talk about. While listening to my mp3's and looking at art at other galleries. And, my girlfriend wonders why I don't have time to do the dishes... AgentSmith

I go to the basement and either fuse glass or work on a stained glass panel. Working with hot glass is therapeutic for me. I've also done what tjohn said...stare stupidly at the screen.

I'm kinda spoiled. If the render looks like its gonna take more than the time for a run to the fridge, I generally ditch it and find out what the ofending texture is and see if there's a way to alter it to something faster. I have rendered overnight and while at work. Don't seem to be any more proud of the image than the ones that render in just a few minutes. I know many of you will disagree, but take this image for example, it was just a few hours from concept to completion with only a few minutes in render time.

FWTempest ( ) posted Sun, 20 October 2002 at 1:57 AM

at the risk of showing my age... I like to play old Infocom text adventures while waiting (anybody remember those?) Being all text, they take almost no memory or system resources. Of course, I've gone through the stories several times already (I mean these things are going on twenty years old now), but it's like re-reading an old favorite book. And I've done the while working or sleeping thing, too.

I usually set it before going to sleep, or clean my studio, or start welding an assemblage peice, make paper or paint and dye it, cut copper and twist it for an assemblage, but lately, I've been wading through Real World Bryce. I avoid housework at all costs, until it bites me in the a**

I let my computer render when I sleep or when I'm at school or when I walk my newspaper-round. And when the render takes days I go and watch some TV or DVD's or I do some homework, play the viola, or I just surf the web on my fathers computer. And if TV, film or internet is not capable of keeping you from getting bored you can always go meet some friends and just talk or play some (computer)games or whatever you do with your friends. I usually don't have problems with having fun when my computer renders. but it might have something to do with the fact that we have about 6 or 7 computers at home, so there's always one free to use.

FWTempest, I remember those Infocom games also, played the original on my brothers laptop (back when laptops could only be carried by large men), played the re-released versions on an Amiga. I only have Bryce at work, so I do work-related things. If I have graphics work to do, I can't render, since the computer with Bryce has all the other graphics programs (and working files). I've done renders of several hours, but I can't do over 8, because I can't guarantee the image will get saved since other people also use the computer. I hate sharing. :) Lin

Rayraz ( ) posted Sun, 20 October 2002 at 9:26 AM

First of all I'm not 13 years old. I'm 17 years and 4 weeks old at the moment. I'm a he, and my actual name is Ruben. I'd like to work in the professional 3D-industry. My dream is to once make my own movie like shrek or monsters inc. But I think it will take some years before I can even get near working on films I think. And I am also one of the people that like to stare stupidly at the screen, but I usually give up far before the render is finished (You'd have to be very stupid to stare at the screen for several days :) ). I also listen to all kinds of music. It can really be anything. I listen to classical music, blues, jazz, hiphop, rap, metal, rock, you name it. I can always relax when listening to music. I can just turn the music on and close my eyes and listen for hours without getting bored. I don't have time to do that at the moment, because there's always homework. I have my exams this year, so it's a very stressfull year. I've had almost all the easy exams last year. This year I've got math, physics, chemistry, dutch and literature and those are very difficult. Math for instance is about 2 weeks per chapter, wich is about 30 or 40 problems per week. And that takes a lot of my time. Some advanced problems take up to 1 hour to solve! The only easy exams are english and informatica. I don't know what informatica is in english, but it's all about basic VBA-programming this year it's really VBA for dummies. The book even describes how to save the files every time. If you've done 10 pages you've got no idea that it was possible to write such a long text about something so easy. English is the relax-hour of my normal schoolday. I usually just do nothing during the lessons untill the teacher get's mad at me and tells me to do something usefull in the library. I then go to the library, I take a computer and I surf the net wich is usually mostly in english, so I actually learn some things about the english language too.

I like to crack the school-network too, so far I've got all the digital photo's of the students of this year and I've got the database with their telephonenumbers, adresses etc. I can't change the D-base of the library yet but I can read it. And quess what: The teachers hold the record for returning books to late! (the worst student is only a few weeks late, but the worst teacher is years to late with returning the books!)

Erlik ( ) posted Sun, 20 October 2002 at 9:55 AM

Well, I sit and watch the pic rendering if it's a fast render. And then stop the render if I see something I don't like. :-) For bigger renders, I choose time when I'm leaving the house for a while, for work usually. If I'm home, I either minimize Bryce and read mail and news and stuff, or read a book. I haven't turned my TV on for a month now. Before that it was at least six months. Books, books, books. The problem with films is, my DVD player is on my computer, so I can't watch films while Bryce is rendering.

Rayraz ( ) posted Sun, 20 October 2002 at 10:04 AM

Our DVD players are in my father's pc and linked to the TV. And I always have a few movies on my harddisk. I can watch 2 movies at the same time while bryce is rendering at my own computer. Okay, watching 2 films does slow down the render a lot, but as long as it's stable I don't always mind.

No need to do my homework at all now. I've just had my first day at shool (I had a week off last week) and the school network has been totally changed. The teachers network and the library network are replaced by one big one and I don't need to crack much anymore. I can freely get to all the data on all the students (pictures, adresses, library history). But the best thing is that I can see what grades people have! I can open a file for each teacher and I can see what grades everyone has got! It's protected by password, but it's a microsoft office password, wich is very easy to crack. I can change all my bad grades without anyone noticing. (won't do it though, I wouldn't dare to cheat on my exams. Doesn't look very good on my CV if I get caught)

Everyone may try to crack my own computer, but it's not going to be easy. it's a stand alone :) Also I never change anyones grades. I only try to hack the network to see how easy it is. There are always a few stupid people that hack the network and get total control over your computer. even if you are writing something in word they can just delete everything (and they will do that, believe me. I've had a bad grade once because my essay was deleted!) If I detect a 'security breach' I tell the people that manage the network and they can make it safer. I may do that whenever I want. I asked the information technology teacher.

  1. Stare stupidly at the screen if it's going quickly enough. 2. Fire up the laptop and Quake (still has excellant gameplay value after all this time! IMHO) if it's still early enough. 3. Go to bed.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

SevenOfEleven ( ) posted Tue, 22 October 2002 at 12:11 PM

Yeah Quake was cool. The Malice addon had some cool weapons and levels. Enemies were interesting too. They even had cutscenes. Used to play Quake with my mom. Give her the lightning gun wielding bot and she was good to go. Can play it well just with the keyboard.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Tue, 22 October 2002 at 5:41 PM

So it is in software render but it still plays smooth and the add in levels are still wonderful fun to explore. I had a wonderful giggle picturing my Mom doing that. (grin)

Back to the topic at hand:

I usually render on my laptop as it is the faster of my two computers ('til next week!!!). While it chugs away, I either surf or do some VBA programing so that the wife thinks I'm doing something constructive and not just laying about.

If time permits (meaning that "she who must be obeyed" is either not home or is otherwise involved with things not involving me)I render one version on the laptop while tweeking its sister on the desktop... lots of back and forth here.

Of course, if I know it will take a while, I'll head down to what Airflamesred calls a "boozer".

Then there was the time I was rendering my naked chicks in the temple http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=171817&Start=1&Artist=Nukeboy&ByArtist=Yes(long before I knew "everyone" did that) I went on a week's holiday. Four days, twelve plus hours...

Nukeboy ( ) posted Wed, 23 October 2002 at 7:51 PM

Rayraz: Which ap are you coding? Access seems to handle VBA the best, Excel next and Word at the very bottom. You have to re-initialize the array to add a variable that's outside the original dimension, if that's what you're trying to do, otherwise it should just be Array(x)=variable; or Array(x+1)=variable assuming that x=Array.Count-1. Be forgiving, it's been a couple of years since I really did VBA. :-)

Rayraz ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 2:47 AM

Thanx I'll have a look. I'm making Macro's for Word. The assignment was to figure out how arrays worked. I quickly got the basics but I couldn't figure out how to add a variable to the array. The basic array was like this: a = array("1", "2", "3") I want to change the array to: array("1", "2", "3", "4") Without having to define the whole array again. With only 4 variables in the array you can easily just type in 'a = array("1", "2", "3", "4")', but what if I have an array with 200 variables. You really don't want to write all the old 200 variables just to add one new one.
