THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: newbie dumb ouestion...

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 6:57 AM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 2:04 PM

I have WinXp, I installed Bryce 5, clicked on icon, and B5 loaded. My problem is no "File, Edit, help...bar" appears. I tried clicking at the top of the screen, and nothing happens most of the time. Sometimes a bar appears, but I can't find anywhere to keep the bar open. If I click on say file, I can choose something, afterward the bar disappears and I can only shut B5 down by Ctrl-alt-del. What in the world am I doing wrong? Please help the dummy. :o(

Just hold your mouse up there and it should appear. Otherwise it will disapear while you work.

tjohn ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 7:35 AM

Yep. If anyone knows a way to keep the bar on let me know.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

Glasko I tried holding the mouse there, I tried clicking... no luck. I also downloaded (and installed) Bryce's SR-1 Pak, again no luck..

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 7:40 AM

tjohn I'm having trouble "getting" the bar, it does not appear.

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 7:46 AM

I understand about the bar disappearing when not in use, I'm having a problem getting it to appear at all. I cannot use the program... :o(

Welcome newbie! The menu bar will not appear if the preview screen (the little window) is updating. Just wait a bit and move your cursor up to the top of the screen and don't move it. Every time you move the cursor the bar will dissapear and you have to wait a bit again for it to show up. This is one of the most frustating things about Bryce. As a workaround - learn the shortcut keys. You will hardly ever need the menu any more. I have a pdf file of the shortcuts on my web site (under tutorials). Peggy

Strange! If you put your mouse arrow to the very top of your screen the bar should pop down. No need for clicking e.d. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time. Just hold the cursor as high as possible. Good luck.

Peggy crossed my posting but she is right on this one Phily!

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 9:37 AM

I really am a dummy, I found that the bar appeared if I actually touched the top edge of the monitor screen with the curser. kicks self in the butt (and thats difficult to do sitting down). :oP Thanks everyone. Could I ask another question? How do I load a poser figure?, I understand Bryce renders better, is this correct?

hyperborea ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 9:51 AM

Glad you found it. No need to spank yourself. We all lost our way at a certain moment. Can't help on the Poser question because we don't us it ;-)

Hyper I saw your erie, but beatiful, landscapes in the gallery...great stuff. Peggy Terrific fantasy world pics, I did download the Bryce shortcuts on your website, thank you. Hyper & Peggy I have a long way to go to reach your level of expertease, but your art shows what can be done with the program. It gives me something to aspire to. Thanks again. Anybody know how to load poser figures? :o(

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 10:39 AM

You import a poser figure as an object from the bryce file menu. You first have to export your Poser figure. I tend to save Poser figures as .obj files then it will import into Bryce. Cie

Philywebrider ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 11:14 AM

Thanks trouble Really great art, you work tells little stories. Are there any advantages to rendering in Bryce? Someone said Bryce renders P4 figures better. I looked at some gallery art of other apps., but Bryce seemed to have what I wanted. Thanks again.

Darkginger ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 12:19 PM

Yeah, as Trouble said, export your Poser figures as Wavefront objects. Then go to 'Import object' in the Bryce File menu, and voila! If the figure's textures aren't saved in the same folder as the obj. you'll have to navigate to where they are and load them at the prompt. Then you have to fiddle with various transparency settings to get Poser hair and Vicky or Mike's eyes to appear right - there are tutorials on this, but basically you load the textures (I'm only talking about those which have a transmap here), then make sure that you have 'Blend transparency' checked in the drop down in Bryce, and put the texture dot into the texture channel (usually A if it's just the one texture you're using). That was probably a very garbled version of how it works (I've just got in from work and I'm not thinking straight yet) so don't hesitate to ask for more details if you can't understand what I'm on about!

Rochr ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 12:43 PM

Poser can do great renders as well, but Bryce have more lighting & rendering options, and is therefore the best! Just my opinion... :) Good luck!

Thanks Darkginger I did check out a tutorial from "Curiography", it is more complicated than I thought. The bit about putting the textures in the OBJ folder is a good idea, I do not think tyhe tut mentioned that. I checked out your gallery art, WOW, I like your pics. Your textures really sell your art. The gallery is so big I get a little overwhelmed, so check it out using the artists that seem to know what they are talkinmg about in the forum.

Fantastic Rochr! I'm glad I picked Bryce, your work just blew me away. Do you have any tutorials anywhere? You did some amazing pics!

DAZ (www.DAZ3D.com) makes a great eagle for Poser. It imports really nice into Bryce.

Masema ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 12:54 AM

Phily, maybe try setting the little preview window to wireframe instead of the full scene.?

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 1:02 AM

I also have XP but my file bar pops down whenever I get close to the top of the screen, I'll go to get a terrian and bionk, down comes the bar...If I wave the cursor anywhere up there, down comes the bar, Think I'll get Peggy's shortcuts, less annoying...:)

Philywebrider ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 3:34 AM

Zhann My problem is just the opposite, I actually have to touch the very top edge of the monitor screen in order for the bar to drop down, close won't work. I noticed your work runs from the totaly real photography, to the unreal photography of your collages, and in the middle is the unreal reality of your gleaming, shining worlds of wonder. Masema I have a Gig of memory so the wire frame preview doesnot make a difference(good thinking though). That glowing, swirling, energy effect you get in your "Totem" pics is great.

tjohn ( ) posted Sat, 26 October 2002 at 6:54 PM

You might want to pick up a freebie program called Grouper. You can run it on a Poser object and it combines all the objects in the file that have the same texture assigned to it, simplifying the process of fixing the textures in Bryce. I haven't really used it yet, but I have heard good things about it.
