Subject: Poser and cats. An alien conspiracy?

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 7:29 AM · edited Wed, 04 December 2024 at 8:58 PM

While reading this forum I've found out that quite a lot of Poser users also have cats.

I've thought about that and I believe we have evidense of a conspiracy here.

See, we all know that Judy is an alien, and so are cats!

Coinsidence? I think not. I guess by now the reason why I've always got at least one of my cats staring into the computer is not - as I thought - to catch the computer mouse, but to seach for Judy, who is probably something like the Borg Queen. The mother of them all. And the reason why my cat is poking the computer screen is an attempt to make Poser 4 turn into Poser 5, in order to get to Judy.

Be afwaid. Be wewwy afwraid!

OK so it was off topic.... sowwy....

ROFLMAO miaow miaow hiss hiss, it explains why 1 of my cats is always trying to use the keyboard when my back is turned.

I don't know about the cats curled up on my bed (cats are often favorites of librarians and bookstores too, by the way), but the Poser cat is definitely alien. I have yet to figure out what creature they used as a model for that feline, but it was no cat I've had the fortune or misfortune to meet. I keep hoping the new content for Poser 5 will bring a more earthly looking animal to us. See, there's a way to bring this back to topic. Purrrr.

Daio ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 7:51 AM

I have a cat whose head at least looks just like the Poser cat's. She was, however, born with a congenital defect - she has a severely undershot jaw. Until I got her I could have sworn the Poser cat's head was based on a weasel not a cat.

yep I hope the new P5 cat looks as if it belongs on earth & not mars

macmullin ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:00 AM

I have a great cat(calico), I think she has an IQ of about 125... and is a close relative to Dilburt's Dogbert (this too is another alien conspiracy). She treats people with total disdain, reserving special contempt for me, who now owns and walks about the house from top to bottom, and never helps pay the mortgage. I believe like Dogbert her "ambition" is to conquer the world and enslave all humans. She... like him, has anointed herself a Saint (St.Catnip), and takes special delight in exorcising the demons of my stupidity (if her food dish has lots of Meox Mix -this happens much less).

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:03 AM

To me the Poser 5 cat looks just the same as the Poser 4 cat...but I am hoping the fabled Content Paradise brings us another variation. Someone associated with Poser must own another cat that could be used as a model (with apologies to Daio's cat, the existing one could use a makeover). Gee, I didn't know I could still be a optimist.

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:06 AM

Do you wonder if dogs ever look at cats and think, "what did we do wrong?" It appears to me, on the surface, that my two dogs work a lot harder than my two cats. But the dogs did get better representation on Poser, though the dog looks nothing like either of mine (doesn't anyone at Poser own a small dog?....it's not a matter of shrinking the dog...the proportions are wrong for the little breeds.)

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:07 AM

Yes, I know it's Curious Labs and not Poser where they work. It's still early here on the West Coast.

jval ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:12 AM

...quite a lot of Poser users also have cats. This is a widely held but incorrect belief. Poser users do not have cats. Cats are noted for possessing an odd sense of humour. This has led some of them them to collect people- a singularly unproductive pastime. - Jack

Dogs have owners, Cats have staff :)

Crescent ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 8:48 AM

I'd pay for a real cat. (Well, a realistic Poser cat. I'd be in big trouble if I got yet another real cat.) The few times I've stuck a Poser "cat" into a picture, my cats have left the room in disdain.

Lapis ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 9:18 AM

Try posing some fish and see what response you get. "Hey look dear, morris thinks are monitor is a scratching post...how cute".

jval ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 10:29 AM

It seems everybody complains about the Poser cat. Undoubtably cats are extremely popular companions. I believe I even read somewhere that it has surpassed the dog as "man's best friend" based upon sheer numbers. Perhaps we should reorient this thread and start casting votes for a "Millenium Cat". If enough of us commit to a purchase it might persuade DAZ to release one. Stranger things have happened... So here's my vote- DAZ, GIMME A DECENT DOMESTIC CAT MODEL! Ideally it should have a few morphs, particularly along the lines of the oriental breeds. - Jack

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 10:35 AM

Well, it does seem odd to me that Daz has a mosquito and not a cat. Is there that much demand for a mosquito???? More than for a cat with morphs (love that idea). I know I don't cruise the galleries as much as I probably should, but it is hard to imagine that there are more graphics using mosquitos versus those that would use cats if a better cat was available. However, I did down load the nice looking beetle from the Freebies, so I'm not anti-bug.

No apologies necessary. Mimi, my cat with the undershot jaw, has a very unique head and it is certainly not typical of most felines. I too would love to see a more realistic Poser cat and woulf be happy to volunteer any of my 8 other cats (who have typical feline heads) as a model.

I can however make the current poser cat look very much like Mimi as evidenced by this render using a texture made from photos of Mimi. :-) (The inset in the upper left hand corner is an actual photo of Mimi)

There's the answer...we don't need to get a new Poser cat. We just need to get new cats that resemble the one in Poser! Mimi is a cutie, actually. That is a very nice graphic, and the resemblance is quite remarkable. You did a great job with the eyes, in particular.

noggin ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 2:02 PM

Oh My No one told use you could do cats in the P5 face room!!!Poser_Mimi looks a gem _hows about posting your texture? My cat Phoebe reads all the posts her _ so just be careful what you say

Daio ( ) posted Thu, 24 October 2002 at 2:28 PM

Sorry to disapoint you but that's Poser4 and the texture was created the old fashioned way. It uses a remapped version of the poser cat (from bloodsong's cheetah)

I posted this in another thread, but it belongs here, I guess. Since we're talking about cats, it's not really OT. So, I'll let you all in on my secret theory (groan!) You see, I have this theory. People can be divided into 'cat-people' and 'dog-people' and there are big differences between the two. Cat-people are generally artistically-inclined, interested in the occult, sci-fi, spirituality, etc. Dog-people are more practical and down-to-earth, good at business and making money. Now before anyone starts asking..... No, I haven't a clue what it means if you like gerbils, iguanas or have a pet camel! And, yes, I'm sure you have a dog and are really artistic! Or 3 dogs, a cat and a collection of pirranas! Rules are made to be broken and I don't insist that you have to like cats to be an artist. But, in general, I find that these characteristics aren't that far off the mark. mac >ducks and hides his 2 cats from the flames<

My household includes 9 cats, a horse (okay so he's not really in the "house"hold per se), two snakes, a pygmy hedgehog and a tortoise. And my cats tell me to say I agree with the cat-person versus dog-person thing. :-)

I also have been instructed by my owners,..... erm.... "cats" to agree. Since I always do as they bid, I'll have no problem with that (so they tell me). I guess I should feel deprived, having only 2 cats to answer to. sigh I always get the short end of the stick. ;o) (My cats have just said they have no intention of sharing my 'meager' services with any other cats. Sheeesh.)

Maclean said: You see, I have this theory. People can be divided into 'cat-people' and 'dog-people' and there are big differences between the two. Cat-people are generally artistically-inclined, interested in the occult, sci-fi, spirituality, etc. Victor, my cat, doesn't agree here. I'm way against occult and "spirituality" (though I have points of view about that). I'm a kinesitherapist (massage therapist who studies human movement to ease the pain those movements inflict to the persons who asks for my services) who currently rants about the state of the profession concerning the number of massage therapist who use "new age language" to describe what the massage will do. And I really HATE that kindcovering off of the botched job. As for my artistic inclinations, well, maybe ?, but no one here has ever seen any of my productions here (I have yet to product a decent poser and bryce render that is not just plain testing, although I have a collection of photo paste-ups I'm quite proud of...) So maybe you're a bit right, Mac, but a bit off target in my case. (And Victor agrees) Purplehayes

Here's one of my cats that I'd love to apply textures to a real looking Poser cat. Unfortunately Snuggles and his brother were killed a couple of months ago, but I have a ton of photos I can use. He has unique markings like his "eyebrows" which I've never seen before in any cats.
