Subject: (I wish it were raining) Cats and Dogs

This may be a stupid question on my part, but here goes anyway, since it is much on my mind. A lot of Renderosity members over the past year or so have mentioned that they really would like to see more realistic cat and dog models. I think most of us assumed that these models would magically be part of Poser 5, but maybe that was just wishful thinking on our part. Certainly no one ever promised these models to us. So, I find myself wondering why no one else in all the vast universe of modelmakers has ever tried to deliver the animals in question? I really would very much like to buy a new cat and a new dog. I doubt I am the only person who feels a void in their Poser libraries. DAZ or anyone else, might this be a worthy project? Kimberly

A few months ago somebody posted some good-looking dog breed models. You might search back in this forum and see if you can find them.......

In my humble opinion, models made after various cat and dog breeds would serve an untapped niche. Personally I think the realism of these potential models depends on the ability to creat realistic fur and pehaps this has been the stumbling block as to why they havn't been fully utilized yet. I would like to hear from Anton and others who could shed light on this one.

I reallyreally want a new cat. :( We have fabulous dragons but no decent cats; and to be honest, as nice as the dragons are, I would get far more use from a cat model. ::sigh::

Allen9 ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 1:04 PM

Even without the fur problem, it sure would be nice if there were a cat that's actually built like a real cat, instead of the strange somewhat-sortof-semi-cattish creature that passes for the Poser cat.

chohole ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 1:04 PM

totally agree, I would love a realistic cat, and a small breeed dog, that could be morphed into different ones. I have terriers, and there is no way you can get the poser dog to look anything like a terrier of any sort.

A Jack Russel Terrier :) What breed of terriers do you have Chohole? I have 2 JRs. Niles

Welsh Pembroke Corgi! I would finally be able to get my wife interested in 3d if there was an affordable poser Corgi. Doug

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

We have two border terriers, I just love terriers, they are little and tactile, but think they are big dogs. The older ones best girl is a rhodesian ridgeback, and the pups best playmate is a ginormous lucher.

Sturwurk you make a great point. Modelers take note. To grow the market of poser we need to look beyond the fantasy realm of dragons and faerys, etc and into the hearts of new customers previously unrealized. Want a way in? The way is through emotion and it is obvious people are very emotional about there pets. Look at the very popular Sims game for example. They are constantly growing their market base with expansion paks that reflect people's interests. I'll bet that if there was both an excellent dog model with many great morphs and textures as well as an excellent cat model with great options as well, people would literally go crazy buying up these products. My request is for a Shetland Sheepdog model to help keep alive the memory of one of the best friends I ever had in this world. "Artie". Thanks

I've been asking for a cat for several years. Dog models seems to be more the preference, but I'd prefer a cat. Even when DAZ was doing the cartoon thing, they did a dog but no cat. What's the deal here? Is everyone a cat hater? I'm working on a long-term project that involves both realistic cats (and a few dogs), and the Poser 3 dog and cat just aren't realistic enough. I don't think that fur is the problem since DAZ has created other animals with fur (horse, monkey, rat). May not be the same fur, but texturing shouldn't be that difficult. I photographed my cats and applied textures to the P3 cats. They came out fair, but don't look realistic because the P3 models don't look realistic.

I have a feeling this post will get some attention. we can hope anyways. There are also bird lovers as well. Cockatoos, cockatiels, budgie, canaries, finches, pigeons, etc. People love animals and the group of model builders that figures this out wil cash in bigtime. Damn I wish I had that skill level.

I've got a free puppy if you want it. But it's not really a realistic type thing. I left out a lot of detail because I was going to try to add fur to it somehow. I was never able to do that. So I just posted it as is. ScottA

It's a lifetime that I am begging every Poser animal creator out there for a good quality morphable cat, and dog! I am beginning to lose the hopes. I would definitely pay if the models are quality.

I for one would love to see a 'Millenium Rover' or 'Millenium Fluffy'. Vicky needs those!

bloodsong ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 4:09 PM

heyas; it's just a rumor, but SOME poser animal/fantasy vendor has some serious plans for some serious cats, dogs, and other animals. it'll take time, though.

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Fri, 25 October 2002 at 4:41 PM

My main reason for not releasing any dog or cat models IS due to the whole fur issue. After P5 gets straight, I will buy it, and be releasing some pets. But this will be several months away. ~EA

Thanks everyone, for all your feedback on this. I just could not believe that I was the only person who would pay for these cat and dog models. Ockham and c1rcle, thanks a lot for the information/link to Lyne's gorgeous morphed dogs. I actually do have all of those, and they are superb, but again...I think we need a new figure of the calibre of the DAZ millenium human figures. I know that a lot of us share our lives with dogs of indeterminate parentage...mixed breeds that we love and cherish for their very uniqueness. (My Holly is part Shar-Pei and part mystery. Some vets say Rhodesian Ridgeback, but who knows?) The point is that a superior dog model with a lot of morphs that could be sculpted into various mixed breeds and mutts would be beyond awesome. And Scott A., your puppy is adorable!! Thank you!!! As for the cats...we are in dire need. I can only echo the sentiments of everyone else. We need a cat that looks like a cat and moves like a cat!! Bloodsong, my hopes are raised by your little hint, and patience is something I have a lot of. Thanks!!! Kimberly P.S. Oh, and Lyne has a terrific fur postwork tutorial on her site!

Lyne has made some very realistic bird models and is selling them through Vista Internet Products. I believe she has every breed you mentioned. The quality is great, prices are very reasonable, and I have never seen customer service to rival hers.

[[dogs of indeterminate parentage]] 'Round here, those are known as "curbstone setters". :)
