If you do them with booleans, I'm certain that they would reflect light. Of course, if you're looking to create the lens flare, it's a no go without some postwork. AFAIK. IMBW, of course. But, if you create the pattern, be prepared to wait for the render to finish. So many reflecting surfaces ...

It's a don't know till you try situation. I reckon this is a worthwhile experiment and it might be an idea to make a few twinkles with some small transparent stars etc to add some glints where you think they might help. So often with this sort of thing I go for what my eye tells me rather than what science would say was true. Looking forward to you doing all the hard working out for my benefit! Go for it! Brendan.
OTTOMH - You need to use high specularity, large spec halo, high diffusion, refraction 105 or more (important), reflection around 20%, transparency 80% with a subtle rainbow transparency tint (use random on the DTE mat). The transparency and reflection will vary depending on the hue of the surroundings, but this should give you roughly the right look. If it's still too "clean", use blurred reflections on premium-64 or above. Hiking up the TIR can also work well for detailed scenes. Good luck.
Okay, I'll go for it. It'll take awhile though, I'm getting ready to move into a new place. I've printed this thread for the settings tuttle gave, I expected high render time because of the transparency and reflective surfaces, I'll post the results good or bad...just keep an eye out. Anyone comes up with more settings or ideas please post...Thanks all, Zhann =>

BecSchm, that's exactly what I'm looking for, it is a model, correct? Do you have a link for download (site perhaps)? I will probably do the work anyway, best way to learn, but I'll do it on a bowl and vase, if you have the decanter... Yes, it's in watercolor, all smoke and mirrors, the glass and reflections, etc. have to be detailed extensively, every little nuance, in pencil first, before painting. Lights first, then darks, then middle range. Painting it's a pain, and takes awhile, but the results are worth it... 7of11, I don't know if a bump map will work to catch the light if it is a transparent object, doesn't sound compatible, I don't know if you use a bump map with a transparency? Please enlighten...

Zhann - yes, this is a model; two, actually. One twisted to the left and one to the right, then imported one on top of the other and grouped together. Made in Shape Magic, a nifty inexpensive modeling program. Stopper is a Bryce object. I'll Email you the file if you like. Anyone else who wants it please IM me with your Email address. (Once again, gotta go to work so can't respond to your requests til evening...) Caution! Slow render times ahead!
