I have a shot panning across a table from one figure to another and I set it up to take 3 seconds. But the timeline plays it back in about a blink of an eye since there are only two key frames. I always thought the timeline tried to play things at the proper speed (memory and resources permitting). I know I can make a thumbnail anim to check speed, but shouldn't the timeline playback at the proper speed if it has the resources??

What program are you using? They're all different in how they impliment things.

Hmmm...What frame rate are you using? Depending on the frame rate and number of frames in your animation, that will determine the speed at which your animation plays back. For example, if your animation is 75 frames long, then the frame rate should be 25fps, if you want your animation to last for 3 seconds.

If it isn't a frame rate/frame length issue, try disabling the "Skip Frames" option. Depending upon the speed of your computer, that'll probably slow things down.

The scene is 45 frames at 15fps. I'll go try disabling the skip frames. thanxs..

You may also have the wrong interpolation setting. From the anination pallette find the camera you are using and then ensure that all of the squares in the grid on the right are green. If you have any other colours that's your problem

How would interpolation effect playback speed? Isn't 15fps still 15fps no matter how you interpolate?
