Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 25 12:38 pm)
Poser 4 runs okay in Classic mode. There are plenty of alternatives to Poser for creating humans, but they're a lot more expensive and time-consuming. You can build some great human models in Maya, for example, but it's far more convenient to use the ready-made models in Poser. That said, DAZ 3D is working on a Poser-like program that will support Poser 4 products. No word yet on when it will be out, for Mac OS X or otherwise. I don't think they've said anything about a Mac version, but I bought Mimic from them, and it runs natively in OS X, which is a good sign.
My problem is that even if they write a Mac OS version of Poser next year, what's the point? Mac users will be a year behind PC users, non-competitive in the marketplace. Add to that the long list of other software associated with Poser for which there's no Mac versions. It means a Mac Poser user has no hope of competing commercially with PC Poser users, so any Mac version of Poser5 is little more than a hobbyist's toy, a curiosity with no real-world relevance, not a cash-cow like the Windows version, for which thousands of people gladly paid to be beta-testers.
It seems like every year, less and less software makers are willing to waste time and money catering to us Mac users, and Apple management gets stranger, more recalcitrant, more defensive and more divorced from reality.
You win some; you lose some. While it's sad that CuriousLabs has slackened in its commitment to the Mac platform, I wouldn't say the market overall is turning away from the Macintosh. Besides, we've got great programs like BBEdit and iMovie that won't run on Windows at all--and these programs are very useful for working with Poser. Apple's transition to OS X hasn't been without its bumps, but in the long run, I think it will make developers much more supportive of the Mac. That said, I wish there were a Mac version of The Tailor! And P5... but that's a little beyond my budget now anyway. A release date of next year should be just right for me to buy it--or DAZ's mystery product--when the money exists.
mateo i agree with you 100% ........im tired of this bull as well.....but i did something about it.......instead of wasting my money on a over priced mac i bought a pc.....loaded !!!......and for half the price......what do i get from it? ......a ton of softwear thats available .....parts that are waaaay cheaper to buy when i want to upgrade......i still use my older mac at home and use macs at work......but my pc with windows xp runs great......im not a fan of windows 98 but xp is great ...very easy to use ......and after xmas i will be getting poser 5 unless i get it for xmas which would be great.......but i had it with waiting to get softwear for my more expensive efficient comp when the less expensive and less efficient( but not by much) comp gets it first....buggy or not....i feel like i should be one of those people for the mac ad campaigne why i swicthed to macs....but doin one where i switched from a mac to a pc......but i wish people would stop asking about when poser 5 for the mac will be out......by that time poser 6 should be out for the pc nnuu
It's lack of support like this that caused me to move away from using Macs years ago. I started doing 3D graphics on the Mac ages ago, using programs such as Infini-D. when I realised that more and more products were being made for Windows over Macs, and the difference in prices on hardware, I quickly switched to windows and haven't looked back since.
There is plenty of high end 3d support for the mac if you want a real 3D program for your MAC i suggest saving up for cinema 4dxl of lightwave3D or even MAYA they all have plugins that will import you poserpro4 characters/animations to be rendered with a REAL raytracer with REAL (NOt FAKED ) Volumetrics POSER is not any measure of 3D software support for the MAC.
The simple fact is that a lot of the higher end programs have more optimizations and better support on the Windows platform, however. Poser is by no means a standard to measure anything else against... it stands in a class all its own. But 3D Studio MAX and Maya can definately be used to measure these things against... and in my experience (and the comments made by people I've worked with on projects in the past, some of whom were predominantly Mac users), the PC support for these applications is superior to the Mac support (which dissapointed quite a few of them)
I worry that it all boils down to money - that is, resources. Mac had the graphic lead. R&D of new products and technology takes money. Lots of money. If PC's and Microsoft sell more, then they have more money to throw at R&D, which will eventually lead to better products. If this is true, then at some point PC development will surpass the Mac. Don't get me wrong - I love my Mac, but I'm worried for the future. Hopefully OS X will turn things around, and on the R&D side, I think more than one genius works at Apple!
i think macs are in real trouble..... wolf359....i know you are a proud supporter of macs.....i was too ....not really much anymore....i still use them ....but most of us dont have the cash to get a mac....then have the cash for the 3d apps ...plus the plug ins .....and so on.....you either have to work for a studio or just be plain rich nnuu
I am proud PC owner also :-) running NT SP6a. Im also very happy with my MAC seat of Lightwave3D 7.5 and cinema 4DXL7 and MAY soon start to look at MAYA4.5 for OSX the future of REAL 3D on the MAC is solid IMHO If poser5 is the only 3D application you plan to use you should consider getting a PC as well, But if you are tired of ,BUGS Crashes seemingly endless Sr beta beta testing and faked lighting solutions no open GL support, no batch render, no hardware acceleration etc etc. you might want to consider other programs that can utilize poserpro4 figures Like C4DXL lightwave and now even MAYA.
You guys, c'mon...
Everytime a product is released for the PC first, everyone seems to get there panties in a bunch and starts boo-hooing about how siad-software giant is slackening their commitment, yadda yadda ya.
Some facts:
OS X is a NEW operating system. Windows has been around since, well, the advent of plumbing. When they say OS X changes everything, they really mean it - and code does not write itself.
A large portion of the Mac Market use graphics programs - and people who make the software know it. see, they are in the business of making money.
Macs are a small fraction of the PC market - but this small fraction is millions of people. Globally. And they know it - it's one of those facts that people who are in business research.
I'm not saying that it hurts to express interest in the product on the platform of your choice - I encourage it. But this whole "poor pitiful me" business is just a pain-in-the-butt to everyone.
And you might enquire about dual-platform licenses. Many of us use both Macs and PCs (because the software will never sync up, or so it seems).
If you really care to do something constructive - write to curioslabs and inquire about the release of "product x", and see what they have to say.
Thanks in advance for not flaming me!
Discreets Combustion2 for OSX is incredible I love that program!!. IM waiting forr APPLE to Buy Softimage3d From Avid and port it to OSX !!! :-)
