Subject: OT: IE6, HELP!

praxis22 ( ) posted Mon, 25 November 2002 at 11:42 AM ยท edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 6:42 AM

Hi, I've just installed SP1 on my machine, (had to to install the latest security patch) I updated Zone Alarm too. Now IE6 refuses to open anything in a new window. I click on a link, a new IE6 window opens, but the title bar is completely blank. I can cut and paste into the new window and it works, it's just not passing the URL through to the new window. It happens anywhere when a new page is opened, if you right click. details: IE version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920 update versions: SP1;Q328389;Q328970 It's a fully patched version of IE6 including IE6 SP1, etc. I cant re-install because my version is newer, and I can't uninstall, because it's tied to the OS, Netscape works fine. If I leave Zone Alarm off, (I have to start it manually because it screws up the network login) it still doesn't work. Anyone seen this before? HELP! :) later jb

I can "open in new window" OK, but if I use ctrl-n to open a new window (showing the current page of course) I get no status bar. I'm on dial-up so the XP firewall suffices. Outlook Express was screwy about switching identities too, had to make it prompt rather than having a default ID. Same version no. as you.

Nope, Ctrl-n works just fine, don't use Outlook, it's a security nightmare, I don't even allow it to execute on my box. I should point out that my home machine, works fine, but there I installed the patches in order... Here at work I installed everything but SP1, (until today) but since I didn't check between installing stuff, I'm not sure when it stopped working. later jb

Thanks Phil I'll check that, but I found the following works: Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit twice and make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box: "C:PROGRAM FILESINTERNET EXPLORERiexplore.exe" -nohome The same applies for URL:Gopher DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,, Application should say: IExplore DDE application not running should be blank Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL Mike Burgess MVP was kind enough to point out to me the other day that 'open in new window' is dependent on the following files, therefore you should ensure they are the correct version for your system, and correctly registered. Run the following commands from start/run. Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful. The first command is the one most likely to work. regsvr32 Urlmon.dll regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll (only applicable to Windows ME, Windows 2000 and XP - if using an earlier operating system, run regsvr32 shdoc401.dll) regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll Some people have noted that replacing urlmon.dll or oleaut32.dll with the versions that came with their operating system has helped. I would not try this except as a last resort. I found that half way down the page on the link above. My associations were OK, but reregistering the DLL's did it. I'm working again :) Huzzah! later jb

"Physician Heal Thyself"

You know I've lived with this bug for so long that I had got used to copy/pasting links. It had become second nature. Just repaired as per above and it works.
