Subject: Somebody tell me what's wrong here.

After carefully making a 3d model in lightwave for conversion to Poser, Exporting it to OBJ, UV Mapping it in UV Mapper, and importing it into Poser, I got a very nice object. When I converted the PHI file, I got something else. Can somebody tell me what is going on here?

The "nice" landshark is the object brought into Poser using the import Wavefront OBJ function. The "ugly" landshark is the same exact OBJ file, imported via a PHI.

What's with the texture? I converted the ugly one to all white, with no texture maps at all, and it's still "dirty." I even applied some textures and got the same black tarry texture over my image maps.

HELP!

Something's wrong with your facets - I think your normals are hinky. Run it through UVmapper, which has a number of tools to fix degenerate factes, flipped normals, etc. Also, poser doesn't like triangular facets, if you have any in there. But uh .... I'm not a modeler :) So you might want to get more opinions than mine BTW very cool beastie - would be fun to texture :)

Well, it's the same OBJ in both pics. I just don't get it. I'll try to UVMapper it some more and see what happens.

'cause I've run out of answers :)

I had the same problem when exporting obj from 3dsmax. Dirty marks all over the model instead of nice white, and the model looked... blocky not smooth. Tracked it down to the obj exporter chopping off decimal places too soon when exporting, since poser uses such small units it does something strange. In 3dsmax with the habware max2obj exporter there is a section under file called # of Digits If its set too low (like 1 for some reason on mine) it cuts short verts etc way too soon and u get stuff exactly like u have shown. Check your exporting options in LW and see if u have an option to do that. (soz but havent used LW in aaaaaaaages) Hope it helps. Soluble Hamster The one, the only, dissolvable rodent.

heyas; that's very strange. it looks as if the smoothing algorithm is over-smoothing your character version as oppossed to the imported version. or it is degenerating the facets. but why, i can't imagine. check your model for 1, 2, or greater than 4 point polys (in lightwave). only use tris and quads. check for polygons that are overlapping. make sure there's no doubled vertices sticking out not attached to anything.... also, if your obj file is saved with normals, try getting rid of them. uvmapper has an option not to save those; use that for poser. these are just wild guesses, though. dunno what's up. :/
