Does anyone know why my dress would have cracks in it right where the groups meet? This is my first model, done in Rhino.

Velen ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 8:28 PM

you have the joint settings wrong. you need to set up the influince grouping so it afects both sides of the joint equily as the mesh is deformed. hope this helps Vel

Thanks for your reply. Can you elaborate? I'm unfamiliar with alot of the terminology because I've just started modeling. Does this have to do with the groups i defined in UV mapper vs. the groups on Vicki?

Meshes will also break if the "Bend" property of the group is not set.

Velen ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 8:43 PM

in poser the dress is set up to bend with the model you load it on. Vicki or what ever :) to in the set up room where you boaned the dress. This is what im talking about. If this is in poser 5's cloth room then the problem is that for it to be cloth it has to be one piece and not grouped as they woth stick togeather in the cloth room.

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 8:45 PM

The dress is for Vicki, Poser 4. I'll check the bending suggestion and see what i come up with.

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 8:56 PM

Ok, checked the settings in the cr2 - all the bends are set to a value of 1. So that doesn't seem to be it...

Heya Pam, Looks to me like the joint settings need to be adjusted. I think what is happening is the mesh on either side of the joint is not set to stretch like it needs, so it breaks if it gets bent too far. I don't know all the fancy words myself for it, since I just sort of do it - trial by error and all that - and do not claim to be an expert. If you like, however, I would be glad to take a look at the dress and see what I can do to maybe fix the prob. Rob

sounds great, IM your email addy to me and I'll get it to you. :) Thanks all.

KattMan ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:28 PM

I noticed you said you created this in rhino. Bring the mesh back into there and check to make sure the edges fo each group match exactly both in point count and in location. If they do not match exactly the mech will not get welded and you will get breaks. If the points do not match up you can fix it easily by turning point on (pton) and selecting a point on the chest and setting on snap to point and snapping it to it's corresponding point on the abdomen. If the number of points don't match then you will have more work to do by deleting points and recreating a few polygons so the edges of each group will match exactly.

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:33 PM

Is this relevant if I did not split the mesh in Rhino and made the groups in uv mapper?

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:38 PM

Where'd ya go Rob?

shadownet ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:46 PM

LOL! Sorry got called away. Will IM now. :O)

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:46 PM

Hehehe

KattMan ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:56 PM

If you didn't split it in rhino then you may not have a problem. If it persists I would still check it out though.

Elusion ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 9:59 PM

The bodypart in the cr2 is not welded. look for weld commands in the cr2 and you will see there is no weld command for that collar.

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 10:02 PM

Ok, I'l take another look.

Dave71 ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 10:30 PM

have you exported the mesh and Welded the Seams? sometimes that happens to me.

Exotica ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 10:33 PM

I wish i knew Dave, hehehe. I'm surprised i got this far considering this is my first model and i know nothing about Rhino. Lol. i'll have to back track to see what i did.

KattMan ( ) posted Tue, 26 November 2002 at 10:38 PM

gaaa, all we are doing is guessing because we can't see much here. First in the model the edges may not match up. Second in the CR2 you should have a weld section. This section follows all of the dial listings and would be right before the texture listings. Make sure you have an entry there for this part. As long as those two pieces are correct it will not break. If bend is not on then you will just see and very bad stretch between the two groups. Exporting the mesh and welding the seams doesn't matter. If the seams match exactly and you have the weld lines in the CR2 they get welded. If the seams don't match nothing will weld them.

Ok, I'm going to have Rob check it out. thanks guys.

Hi Pam, Just in case you are having problems getting my emails, I will IM you. I did get the file and have solved the prob. Will IM shortly.

Exotica ( ) posted Wed, 27 November 2002 at 1:39 AM

I just wanted to thank everyone for trying to help me out. I think I at least learned what kinds of questions to ask now. :)

JoatMon2 ( ) posted Wed, 27 November 2002 at 2:59 PM

Looks like you have the lCollar and the abdomen touching. The lCollar should only be touching the chest (and lShldr if there is one). In other words, the bottom part of the lCollar mesh should only come in contact with the chest. Looks like your model's chest does not go all the way around the model but just down the center. Thanks Joat - I'm all set now. :)
