Subject: Christmess tree

Alekssander ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 4:56 AM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 4:00 AM

How do I make a descent christmass tree, without ending up with 100 lights and 100000 objects or 100 of millions of polygons?

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 5:13 AM

Go get the free tree from X frog. It's 350,000 polys but it's nice. they got a few good trees there in samples somewhere that are nice. you got to look around a bit to find them. Use ambient 100 % objects for the lights then maybe you'll only need 1 or two real lights and don't use spheres for objects to hang from the tree use cubes and piramids maybe go grab my not so primitive free set and find a few cool ones there. There way less polys than spheres. Group and group some more !

You will not find it at x-frog, but here:-) Guitta

Thanks I knew it was somewhere. I'll add that link to the free stuff thread.

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 5:36 AM

Beat me too it, it's already there.

Alekssander ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 6:52 AM

Thanks :) MP: It's suppose to luck realistic ;) Merge, merge and merge some more....

Alekssander ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 6:54 AM

ohh, what kind of format, should I load down? (not luck, but look, realy emberrased)

gebe ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 6:58 AM

3ds Alekssander. That's the only format you can use with Vue.

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 6:58 AM

Go get the blue spruce and I'd always get the obj type before anything else cause the textures will be easier to work with getting them into vue. I think there png. ya got to play with the textures a bit to get it into vue but there is now a tutorial right? for X frog trees.

gebe ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 7:00 AM

The OBJ file will not open (did not for me), because you need to have Maya installed for that.

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 7:01 AM

What's that you can use obj. pick one anyway there all the same ! Just don't pick the max.

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 7:02 AM

Oh that the catch....

Alekssander ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 7:04 AM

So I load down the .max at shcool and save them as .3ds then. And burn when the teacher looks another way... :o

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 7:07 AM

Exactly ! Ha ha.

rds ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 5:05 PM

The png files don't seem to work very well? hmmm Tried converting them to bmp but that was useless. Some said there was a tutorial?

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 5:11 PM

Ya there is a tutorial. I had the same trouble with the png and with the convered png to bmps. It doesn't work the way it's suppose to. That button up there that says Tutorials is where ya should look but here it is anyway.

I have a pretty simple texture that turns the standard Vue-Firtree into a a-proxi-christmas-tree. THe only problem is you will have to turn of the preview and try to render a lot of times, since Vue WILL definitely crash as soon as you create a mixed texture with any one of those textures having a glow of some kind. If you really wish to loose your sanity over Vue, I can send you the texture. Joerg

Thanks for your help guys but I think I am going to pass on this one. I think I can make a better tree just using the fir tree in Vue. Thanks again.

Gloria Gast has created a beautiful christmas tree for Poser. You can find it in the Poser free stuff (do a search for "Christmas"). You also will find her other Christmas stuff.

For you who doesn't have Poser, I have written to Gloria and hope she will accept to give away a *.vob version. I'm waiting for an answer.

The left tree is the original 27273 polys, the right one is double made by me.

Hope to get an answer soon:-)

Now that's a nice looking Christmas tree Guitta. You always amaze me with your resources.

Alekssander ( ) posted Thu, 05 December 2002 at 6:16 AM

Guitta: Looks great, but how do it look close up?

MightyPete ( ) posted Thu, 05 December 2002 at 6:22 AM

I'm trying to make a tree, is difficult man. This is about my 50th attempt. No problem making them poly pigs but getting them trimmed so the fit threw the door now that's the problem..

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 05 December 2002 at 6:44 AM

Alekssander, from close up it looks like an artificial plastic tree. If you need it from very close up, you don't need it. But decorated as a Christmas tree and put in a room, it looks nice:-)

gebe ( ) posted Fri, 06 December 2002 at 5:29 AM

Gloria Gast gave me the permission to convert her Poser props (Christmas)into vob files. You can find it now in the Vue free stuff. Of course, as I use Vue 4.11, they are converted in Vue 4.11. here is what Gloria wrote: I do not own Vue d'Esprit my self, but have enjoyed many beautiful art work done by artists who use it! I am overjoyed that you like My Xmas tree and all the trimmings! I see no reason what so ever that you could not format it for that program. However, the READ ME for each Model must be INCLUDED EXACTLY AS WRITTEN in my Downloads for POSER at Renderosity. Also I must receive FULL Credit for the creation of all my models Posted in the Vue d'Esprit free downloads category at Renderosity. If you can assure me you will do this, then you have my permission and blessings! Many thanks to her and have fun with these beautiful Christmas objects. :-)Guitta

Alekssander ( ) posted Fri, 06 December 2002 at 6:45 AM

I thought most americans used plastic tree. Just saw a pink tree on a site??? And some other weird trees ;) I'm loading down the Gloria tree at the moment. Thanks to her and you :) I am trying to make a tree at the moment. Ended up with a tree, with only 1 million plygons. Record so far...lol

MightyPete ( ) posted Fri, 06 December 2002 at 6:52 AM

I made some trees but there all to big. I gave up. I got the xfrog tree not to bad with texture tweaking in photoshop. That xfrog tree is too dark.
