Subject: For the modelers - one-sided objects? Why does THIS happen?

I imported a model into Poser, and this is the deal; the radar dish seems to have a back, but no "front"; the dish doesn't show up. It renders fine. Is there any way to fix this? Posting several images...

If you have it in UV mapper you may have to reverse the winding order so you can see it. It happens sometimes to some models. Sharen

looks like the "front" polygons need to be reversed. the easiest way that i know to do this, but, i use rhino...is to open it again, and choose the parts that don't show up, and, type flip. whatever you made this in should have a similar command.

I am having the same problem When I take it in to my paint program I have the option of making it 2 sided and it looks fine but I can not save the model only can save the texture it is driving me crazy (a short drive at that)

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 8:22 PM

Just load it into UVMapper and select, make double-sided. This will give you front frcing polys on both sides. Or just extrude it in your modeller a hair to make it an object instead of a plane. ~EA

I am sorry to bother everyone again but in uv mapper I do not see an option for make double-sided could you point me to it please

ElectricAardvark ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 8:49 PM

Oops..sorry. I'ts been over a year since I loaded the lite version of UVMapper. I guess you can only do that in the Pro version. Everybody should own the Pro version. Best $50 I ever spent.

The funning thing is I just downloaded the new 2.0 version and I can not find it there ether

Maz has a utility in Free Stuff (Objaction Twoface) that might be helpful.

thanks

MaterialForge ( ) posted Wed, 04 December 2002 at 9:41 PM

Thanks folks! I'm only converting the models to Poser props. They were originally made by someone else in Strata, and I'm not a modeler. We're collaborating on a huge scifi series for the Marketplace. So it looks like the pro version of UV Mapper will do it. LD, I'll check Maz's Twoface utility first... :) So far so good, except this one! :) Thanks again for your tips!! --Donnie

silver,

The "normals" for the dish only have facet (surface) data for one side, the back side.

It will not show up in unrendered images unless viewed from the back.

It will show up when rendered.

You can try using the "Group Tool" in Poser to duplicate the polygons for the dish, and "create new prop" for the dish.

Export the dish (new prop) and then import it back into Poser - but make sure you check the "Flip normals" box.

Position the (new prop) dish in the correct position with the rest of your prop.

Now, export the whole thing to make it one assembly.

Hope this helps.

P.S. That's a real nice looking model!

Remember ... "With Poser, all things are possible, and poseable!"

Another option is to import the OBJ file into the free "Amim8or" modeller. This allows you to select specific faces and flip the normals. The only limitation with animator is it doesn`t support grouping. This is fine for most props, but not for figures.

heyas; as you know by now, when you look at the 'back' of polygons, you can't see them. but they render just fine. you can leave it that way, or turn them to face the front (then they won't be seen from the back). i wouldn't make them double-sided. poser 3 can do 2-sided polys fine. poser 4 is kinda iffy on them. poser 5 absolutely hates them and will not render them properly at all. if you can't stand the one-sided only view, i would suggest giving a slight thickness to the dish, with the front and back connected by a thin row of side polygons.

maclean ( ) posted Thu, 05 December 2002 at 4:20 PM

The other disadvantage to double-sided polys is that it also doubles the file size (logical, no?). So if file size is a consideration, I'd forget that option. mac

Cheap trick using Poser: Import model twice: first time, import like you do now; second time, import with normals flipped ( one of the import dialog options). The first import will be with front of dish invisible. The second import will (I guess) have front dish visible and everything else invisible. Combine the two models in one by exporting them to one obj.
