THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Terrain Tiling

cainbrogan ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 3:00 PM · edited Tue, 14 January 2025 at 8:34 PM

Have any new tutorials come out for this? I have one, but it was'nt as simple as I'd hoped...A plugin for this would be cool! = )

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 3:08 PM

I'll wait for an answer with you. I've tried tiling terrains before, but it didn't work as perfect as I hoped.

What problems are you having?

paul_carduner ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 4:43 PM

i am also having some problems with that... the terrains dont match up exactly. one side is slightly different from the other so there is a crack.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 5:49 PM

It doesn't matter how close you move in to where the join is, the gap never closes completely. Also I've found that the tiling, in many cases is not exact and it's then impossible to match the edges.

cainbrogan ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 5:57 PM

Exactly. I've been really dissapointed that this is not a function of Bryce5 itself. Anybody interested in a making the plugin? = )

paul_carduner ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 6:06 PM

Attached Link: http://www.bsmooth.de/

well there is this other not plugin but program that makes bryce terrains... but its only for mac... and i use a PC :( so... yep. anyhow... its the link above if you wanna look at it.

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 8:09 PM

Calaxya has one somewhere... to compensate for the crack, when you have finished your big tile, select all of them and go into the object attributes (before any reszing) the x and z dimensions should be 81.92x81.92 change each of them to 82.0 tada!

Aldaron ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 8:47 PM

OK I assume you know how to tile terrains it's just getting them to line up. 1. Select 2 terrains that are side by side (it helps to do this as you are tiling). 2. In top view press the + key to zoom in as far as you can go. 3. Select the terrain you will move. Alt-[arrow key] until the edges meet. There will still be a slight gap if you render it you'll see it. 4. Go into the attributes and add/subtract .04 more in the direction you were moving the terrain. Now they should exactly match.

Aldaron ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 8:52 PM

Forgot to mention it's easier to move the terrains initally by using the arrow keys as the amount moved will always be the same. IOW select your terrain, duplicate it, go to terrain editor and tile, then use arrow keys to move (should require 14 key presses or 7 shift-arrow key presses). then follow above.

cainbrogan ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 9:52 PM

The method of tiling, from the one tutorialI know of, is itslef just very difficult. It's much too time consuming unless you have a huge terrain to begin with, never mind needing post work. I've been hoping there was a multi-Replicate Formula around here somewhere, if not leads to a plugin/progie, or even plans for B6! = )

Tiling terrains is not hard at all. Now animation...that's difficult. Here's a link to a good tutorial. I would suggest focusing on just "Section Two: How to Tile". The gap problem I resize my first terrain to x=80,y=20,z=80. All my terrains are then spaced 79 units apart. No gaps. But, that's just my way, may not be suitable to everyone and every situation. if you are going to use terrains for non commercial use... try terragen... its free... and you can export the terrains as lightwave object and import them into bryce

cainbrogan ( ) posted Wed, 11 December 2002 at 11:07 PM

Are they infinite planes? = )

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 12 December 2002 at 12:14 AM

No, they are G2H maps like Bryce.

You can export terragen terrians, and import them to Bryce? WOW, I learn something new here everyday, it's mind boggling...=)

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 12 December 2002 at 6:04 AM

And vice vera, if you want. (Bryce to Terragen)

in 3ds or as a height map?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 12 December 2002 at 7:02 AM

All your comments here have been so informative. I'd like to say thanks for the help. Perhaps now I'll be able to produce seem free terrains. Cheers. Catlin

Height Map, Bryce to Terragen .lwo, from Terragen to Bryce (I think it's lwo. Whatever it is I'm sure Bryce is able to import it)

Cararra will import (and export) Height maps as well. I used that once to import a B3 mountain obj into Poser but alas no one there seemed recognise it or it was old news. Oh well. I don't remember if the terrigen demo is time limited or register when you want to do commercial stuff with it, but I think I still have a copy on my computer somewhere. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the map info. If it's not time locked I might be able to use it. (not that you can tell from what I've done so far, but I like to make my own height maps for Bryce - both frustrating and fun.) - TJ

I've been talking with the maker of BSmooth. He says it has endless tiling functions, but that those are'nt the purpose of the pplication. I told him, tht was what I wanted it for, that I was willing to contribute $ to the effort, and that he should get in touch with Corel over this, because I think Bryce is missing a building block here. He replied and said it was'nt about the money, and that it may be done this spring. I was hoping he'd be done sooner, you ca'nt look a gift horse in the mouth. = )

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 12 December 2002 at 3:47 PM

Bryce is missing a building block here Maybe I don't understand? What building block? Bryce has amazing terrains and it tiles them... AgentSmith

How does bryce tile a terrain accros the infinite plane? It may tile the texture, but not he dissplacement Map... = )

bikermouse ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2002 at 1:25 AM

multi-replicate the terrain with offset? Sudden thought # 324,652,312,301: how about this - turn both terrains so they are oriented straight up 90 degrees matching the xyz's add enough Y offset to the second terrain that it is completely above the first, press the down arrow group both terrains long enough to return to 0 degrees. ???? wonder if that works ???

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2002 at 1:49 AM

Cainbrogan, it sounds like you want to create an entire world/planet. Use Mojoworld 2.0 http://www.pandromeda.com/

Mojoworld is a whole generation ahead of bryce in terms of procedural landscape creation.

Mojoworld has F. Kent Musgrave, who helped build Bryce in the first place. Just think, if Bryce had Mr. Musgrave furthering it this whole time, where would it be now? AgentSmith

Oh, hey did you run across that recent post in the Bryce forum by Musgrave himself? He says when they were putting Bryce 4 together, he had constructed an "elaborate and accurate simulation of sunsets and sunrises" within Bryce 4. And, although the simulation was never activated, the code is still laying there with Bryce 4, and maybe even in Bryce 5....lol, just kills me. AgentSmith

Yeah Me too. Like the Lost Dutchman Mine - people say it's lost, but several years ago I blundered into the entrance of a hidden 'military' installation that is in a cave on a hill in Phoenix right where the Dutchman is supposed to be. So I'd be willing to bet somebody knows how to access the hidden skylab code - but I'm happy with Byrce as it is for now; there's so much I still have to understand. - TJ

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2002 at 8:31 AM

Oh, I bet Musgrave knows...lol. No, actually, I doubt if there is a keystroke that will make it work, probably needs more coding to make it so bryce controls it. (or something like that)

AgentSmith. Bryce already makes entire worlds/planets with the infiite plane. It's just that for some odd reason it'll texture it from here to infinity, but not dissplace it...go figure. Does anyone want to post a screenshot of Mojoworld interface? I think I've tries either it or Terragen. Whichever the UI was'nt half that of Bryce. In todays world of endless 3D it's a shame not to use applications with beautiful function controls, I think. Like I say Bryce is just missing a building block. BSmooth look s to have this covered, but is only for MACs right now... = )

bikermouse ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2002 at 9:59 PM

cainbrogan, BSmooth does look interesting - can't wait for it to be ported to PC. You can or could DL a demo of mojoworld. Although its been listed before, perhaps someone will chime in with the URL - if not you could check Bryce archives for the URL -or- I think that there is ,or was, a mojoworld forum here at renderosity. - TJ

cainbrogan ( ) posted Sat, 14 December 2002 at 10:28 PM

Have you contacted klaus@bsmooth.de? I think he is just waiting for enough interest to get to it. We had a nice e-mail conversation, but left his expectations at this Spring. He also says the algorythms for this are common knowldge, so he may be interested in finishing ahead of plans. I offered him, money and was kinda scolded for it, though I got a nice little lesson on how to buy and bring about Bryce 6 for $3,000,000! MojoWorld is good friendly competition for Bryce, but after having a peek at the U.I. I believe they will need to work together before I get serious with it. = )
