Thanks for the quick response. I should specify that I am only rendering stills so a render farm or equivalent is not needed here. However, if this thread attracts general interest then others may have questions or suggestions that are relevant to video / animation.

Quote - Just how much extra work is there with Octane?
Well, that's a pretty subjective thing. Some will say not much, some will say too much!
I tried the Poser plug-in about 6 months ago. It was fast with my Nvidia card dedicated to Octane and a Radeon for the main screen (or was it the other way around? can't recall) The speed was there but I was put off by the need to duplicate or re-create textures. And re-do the lighting. And basically just learn the ins and outs of a new program. In general it was more fiddling with Octane thanI wanted to do to recreate what I already had in Poser -- just to speed up rendering.
I do a lot of progress renders so I think a GPU approach would be great, but I am not usually willing to do the extra work to "re-invent" a complex image in Octane.

Thread: SSS Render Quirk | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for the note.
No, the sss render pass doesn't happen with check mark removed -- but -- the visual result in the render is identical. The sss effect is obvious in the image even though sss is not checked. I'm sure I'm doing something goofy but can't figure out what.
I created subsurface skin nodes using the handy wacro in the material room and attached them to each of V4's body texture groups. The effect was immediately noticeable upon rendering.
Maybe I just need to go back through the manual again more carefully and see if I am missing something. I have experimented with sss in the past but it was always too slow to justify the results. With my latest computer and PP 2014, the effect is both more appealing and takes less time, so I'd like to try working with it.

ps. The IDL pre-render pass does happen as expected but only when the IDL box is checked.

Thanx for the reply . . . I thought I was in the PP 2014 area, sorry 'bout that.
Version PP 2014 10.01.1.25099 SR1
No, have not contacted SM yet. Thought maybe it was something I was doing wrong and another forum member might spot it. It's not really a problem since the SSS nodes do work, it's just that whenever something does not work the way it should I raise questions.
According to the Poser reference PDF SSS should not work at all if it is not checked in the render settings. But that's not what's happening.

Thread: Spooky Install Disk Failure | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks ToxicWolf, nice of you to say.
Of course considering that I got it right the first time when I installed it on my previous computer, well, I felt a little sheepish (no wolf joke intended) about missing it this time.

Boy do I feel dumb!
I guess that's what happens when we get more and more far sighted. Now if I had actually read the disk label, well . . .
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I guess I was remembering an older version that came with several disks.
Guess it's time for new reading glasses.
Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback . . .
So otherwise, there are no performance issues realted to incorporated textures? Like CPU overhead and memory requirements for managing the larger file -- vs. overhead for tracking the texture soures? That sort of thing?

Thread: Poser 7 Import Problem | Forum: Vue
Thanks nruddock for the input . . . I don't remember the directory structure for P6 that well. What subdir and/or files from P7 would I copy to the main Runtime directory?

Thread: Poser 7 Import Problem | Forum: Vue
Thanks Peggy,
I was hoping for a different answer but I guess Vue uses the Poser exec to import files, so it makes total sense that V5 would not be able to read P7 files if the Poser format has changed since version 6.
I did revert to exporting P7 in OBJ format and that imports fine into Vue. It took some fiddling with transparency masks but the end result was satisfactory.
Still, I will probably install P6 for convenience as you suggest.

I have played with the morph tool -- pretty neat, actually. A lot like sculpture, but I find it a bit tedious and kind of slow going..
I guess I got spoiled by being able to create character faces just by spinning a few dials.
Sigh . . .

Thanks for the feedback -- guess I'll stick with DAZ figures for children and youngsters.
I was kinda hoping to consolidate under G2 or V4 at some point -- it's getting a little hazy for me with so many choices resulting from CP and DAZ duking it out for market share.
With enough effort, you can get pretty much the same results (IMHO) for a given image from G2 or DAZ figures. Of couse, a lot depends on the circumstances and I am generalizing to make a point.
Nonetheless . . .
For some of us, the investment in meshes, morphs and textures that it takes to support two "families" of characters is getting serious. Perhaps the next gen of aftermarket converters will help pull things together.
But it would be nice to have one main system to work with for character morphs, clothes conversions/exchanges, texture sharing, etc.
Dreaming, ya think?
For me it's becoming a heck of a left-brain, right-brain tug-of-war these days between technical issues and artistic expression.
Thanks again,
R.
