Ah! The tree! hehe. Seriously though, trees will dramatically increase your render time. Even adding one or two of those cool Bryce5 trees can add several hours to your render time. You might try the render without the tree first and see how much difference there is in render time.

I have an old 4"x5" Wacom that is sitting on the shelf since I got my 12"x12" Wacom Tablet. It lists for around $500, but it's worth every penny. It has it's own programmable tool bar and brush sets for Photoshop. It makes painting and drawing in Photoshop more like sketching on a real pad. My 4"x5" is pretty cool too, but after the 12"x12" it seems so puny.

tuckersaur, whether you use native Bryce5 trees, old Bryce4 trees or imported mesh trees, you will still dramatically increase your render time. Those metaball trees still use transparency maps, and that equals beaucoup render time. Mesh trees have a lot of faces reflecting and refracting light in every direction, increasing the number of rays to trace. More rays equals more render time. Any way you look at it, trees increase your render time. I believe there is a link to the Delvin Forest CD at 3dplants.comThread: Field of View vs. Focal Length | Forum: Bryce

Field of View is a technical term that is thrown around alot. The field of view is the width of an area you can see at 1,000 yards. Obviously that has little meaning in a 3d app. To further confuse you, it is a variable that depends on the aperature and distance to the object Focal length: The distance between the film and the optical center of the lens when the lens is focused on infinity. The focal length of the lens on most adjustable cameras is marked in millimetres on the lens mount. Since we don't use real lenses, this is kind of a moot definition too. Focal length is also a variable, depending on the size of the film plain, which we don't use. I'm a professional cameraman and photographer. I've also been using Bryce for close to 6 years. The best I've ever been able to do in Bryce is aproximate whether I am wide, normal or telephoto. In real life I use different format cameras all the time. For example; on a 35mm still camera, a "normal" focal length (ie: 1 to 1 magnification) would be a 50mm lens. On a 16mm movie camera a "normal" focal length is a 25mm lens. As I said, it is a variable number. Since we have no film plain, no lenses, no aperature and no real measurement in actual terms. there is no way to do the calculation; Distance x Image size _______________ = Focal length Object size So, do like I do and use your best judgement. ;-)Thread: Diffrences between Bryce4 & Bryce5 | Forum: Bryce
For me, the Depth of Field feature of the Premium Render setting is what makes it worth it. Finally I am able to create a feeling of depth by throwing the background out of focus. It just lets you add more drama to your scenes. The tree lab is okay, although the more trees you use, the slower the render gets. I also own the Delvin Forest CD, so I'm up to my ears in trees of all kinds anyway. Network rendering is incredibly useful for doing animation, and the metaballs are just priceless. Bryce5 is definately worth the upgrade.
Thread: Dune inspired image | Forum: Bryce
It is very dark, but that could work if there were some small light sources close to the ground around some of the machinery. Plus some textures with ambient details like windows on the structures would be good. This would help give you more of a sense of scale, which is what this is missing. Adding something detailed in the foreground, like a mountain top, a thopter, or a piece of one of those buildings close up will definately create more depth and scale. Physically increasing the size of the terrain and the models also helps. Think of the camera as the size of a man's head, increase the scale of everything until it is in proper proportion to the camera and things start to look more real. You've got a good start here, all you need to do is tweak and fine tune it to make it a great image. I'm a long time Dune fan too, I've read every book. So if I like it, you know you're doing something right. ;-) Long live the fighters!

Thread: Are PoserWorld Subscriptions worth it. | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Abso-frappin-lutely! There's probably more stuff there for people without all the extras. I won my subscription in a contest, but I will definately spend the money to renew it. They're great.
Thread: First Order from DAZ! - Reassure me? :o) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I order from daz3d with credit card all the time, been doing it for years. I also sell brokered software on their site. I've never had a problem. You should get an invoice and download page moments after you place your order, plus three email invoices and download links will arrive a few minutes later. If you do not get a download URL right away, email: sales@daz3d.com or call the 800 number listed on the web site.
Thread: Backing up Poser... how do YOU do it? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
My Poser folder is 4.34 Gigabytes. I save all my installers for all my props and characters, and I pray ;-). I don't know how it got so big, with all the free daz3d give aways since '96, and all the Millennium characters, Poserworld subscription, freestuff, etc... ;-) I guess I could devote an entire 4.7 gig DVD RAM disk to back it up, and it might take several hours.

The Trek Meshes link just worked for me fine. You can also try www.3dcafe.com. Look in their free model/scifi section. They have some good classic ones.Thread: Creating Bryce terrain | Forum: Photoshop

Here's a better example of a grey scale map created in photoshop being used to generate 3D terrain in Bryce using the import picture feature in the terrain editor. Click on the link to see the cityscape created using a higher resolution version of this map.Thread: Better way to pan? | Forum: Bryce
