For some reason the crops seem to convey a sense of motion to me. The master photo doesn't have the same effect. I especially like this sampler because it does have that effect, and the individual images are larger and more detailed. It's like the best of both versions. I'd like to see a larger version (2X at least) of this sampler image.

Thread: Is it Photography or something else | Forum: Photography
Since Slynky brought up commenting on gallery postings, I
wanted to mention that I "turn comments on" in my postings
for two reasons, mainly. First I think it's kinda rude to
not allow people to voice their opinions in a public forum
(such as renderosity.com galleries), and second, because I
am looking for suggestions for improvement. I'm
never completely satisfied with the stuff I post, and
it can be quite frustrating when I know that something
is wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.
Anyway, to all who care, please feel free to critique my images.
You won't hurt my feelings, and I appreciate your input.
Thread: Juxtaposition, I am a bit unsure... | Forum: Photography
My take on juxtaposition, although I haven't had time to shoot any examples, is an image of two (or more) objects that are related to each other in some way. Gunsan's chicken/egg image is a good example. I had heard somewhere that Shaqil O'Neil and that little guy who played Mini-Me in the second Austin Powers movie are supposed to be good friends. A photo of them hanging out together would be a very good example of juxtaposition. The trick, I think, with juxtaposition is to get the viewer to recognise what the relationship between the objects is. The fun thing about juxtaposition is that it opens the door to visual jokes, such as a "No Swimming" sign posted in front of a frozen pond. A disabled car with a wheel that is falling off, parked in front of a tire store with a sign over it announcing a half off sale is another good one. Finding good juxtaposition subjects, however, takes time, and I don't know if one month will be long enough.

Caledonia: I'd love to show the photo to you, but I promised Slynky that I'd destroy it after looking at it. :-)

Slynky: When I got my first video camera, I wanted to do
something different with it. Most people tape their kid's
birthday parties, or their trips to Disney Land. I wanted
to do something more gripping, interesting, exciting. So
I took it into the worst, most dangerous part of New Haven.
A garbage strewn street called Howard Ave., in the Hill
section. This was the epicenter of the race riots of the
sixties, mentioned in that old Doors tune which goes "Blood
in the streets of the town of New Haven", etc. It's
currently a neighborhood infested with drug gangs. I'm
genuinely lucky that I didn't get shot. I had one guy yell
at me to "Shut that fucking camera off!!"
So anyway, a dark alley with some crackheads in it is no big
deal. Just snap your flash in their faces and they'll be
blinded for half an hour, at least! :-)
Oh, and "lady"?? What makes you think I'm a woman? I don't
presume that YOU'RE a woman just because you look good in
black fishnets, now do I? :-)

I once saw a nature documentary on gazelles. Young gazelles
do something called "pronking." Pronking is basically just
jumping up in the air for the fun of it. Little kids like
to pronk too. The footprints in the picture are great.
Suddenly I feel soooo old...

You're lucky to be living where there are lots of abandoned
cars. It can be very theraputic to pick up a rock and heave
it through a windshield, sometimes. If that truck's windshield
is your work, then all I can say is, NICE THROW!!
Best wishes to you and yours. I'm sure things will work
out for the best.

Doruksal: Wierd as in I couldn't figure out what was
different about your garment in the different frames.
The manipulation was so well done that I didn't recognise
it as such, even after looking at it closely.
When Maygen laughed I knew I'd missed something and
after looking again, REALLY hard, I figured it out.
BTW, that first Shell head image up above is really
fantastic.

To comment on Slynk's comment, I gotta say that Doruksal's
picture is one of the most interesting portraits I've seen
in a while. I especially liked the way his red garment was
repositioned for each frame. The different lighting was
interesting too, because it made his face look thinner and
thinner in each frame. Subtle enough to be credible. The
image as a whole made me stop and ask myself what was going
on in the shots. That's always fun.
And what an attractive bunch of people! I'm quite intimidated! :-)
All of you could afford to spend more time in front of the
lens rather than behind it. As for me, I like it right here
where I am, facing the SMALL end of the lens!

There's something about the image of the live pigeon that tends to play a trick on my mind with the porcelain owl which causes me, for an instant, to think that it too is alive. Very interesting effect.

Great shot, Taltos. I really like the lighting. It's amazing
what you can do with next to nothing for lights, isn't it?
On the subject of different monitors, wouldn't it be nice
if renderosity had a monitor calibration page? It'd be
most useful for those (like myself) who mainly intend to
publish here. That way others could simply calibrate before
viewing the galleries.
