Rohy: Well if there are others like that around just wait
until after dark to go looking for them. They should be easy
to spot then, what with all the sparks flying off of them.
Good luck, and use a telephoto lens!

Here's another link relating more specifically to high speed photography.Thread: My First Hi-Speed Stop Action Photo | Forum: Photography

Oh all right Misha, it's really a semi-fake. My brother and I posed (seperately) for this shot, but the spray really is a bunch of high-speed stop action shots from a spray bottle. I've done a number of other test shots in order to get a feel for stop-action photography and eventually I intend to get around to doing some good looking stuff. For more than you ever wanted to know about sound activated triggers and homebrew high-speed strobes, see the link above.Thread: For Rohyphnol, Punk Clown, and Other Utility Pole Addicts | Forum: Photography

Michelle, you ought to send Eco-usa.net your photo. Their's is terrible. I grew up in southern Connecticut. I'm now living just north of New Haven, CT. Never saw a 3 foot skunk cabbage though! The ones around here are about the size of a soft ball, but they grow in great numbers.

Yup. I know that plant. That's a Skunk Cabbage (don't know the scientific name). If you break off a leaf (or step on one accidentally) it'll stink just like a skunk but not as strong. The similarity of odor is uncanny. I lived in a house, as a young child, that had a cemetary across the street and a swamp (salt marsh) out beyond the back yard. I'm quite familiar with skunk cabbages as a result.

Hmm, all I see is the intake manifold of a 12 horsepower Toro lawnmower (with optional bagging attachment), Mahatmah Ghandi's specticles resting on a cricket bat, six slightly deformed Halloween candy corns sort of arranged in a circle with their pointy ends facing outwards, one of those clear plastic things that they put under office chairs to keep the wheels from tearing up the carpeting, a hockey skate, my old two button mouse, a Jack Daniels sample-size bottle (empty), and 4 1/2 pounds of spinach linguini (al dente). Nope, no whale... Oh wait! I see it now!

Both are great. The interesting thing about the B&W version is that each time I looked at it (glancing away for a second and then looking back) I seemed to see something different in it. At each glance it'd look like tar, then grease, then tree bark, etc. I guess the fact that it was B&W, i.e. just shadow and light, with no color to suggest what it actually was, it allowed my imagination to run wild. Lots of fun.

To make things more complicated, the new Fovion CCD technology looks like it has potential. Things will get really interesting if Nikon starts using it in their digital SLR's.

I'm happy for your success, Rork. Both images look great. I've never done darkroom work myself, but you're inspiring me to try. Is it expensive to get set up?

I don't know who said it, but that doesn't make it any less true: "Every life is an act of bravery." I commend your courage to make the changes that you feel are necessary, nplus. Good luck.

This has potential for some very funny photos. I know I'll never be able to get a shot of this scene now, but I'm reminded of something I once saw which would've been great: A large sign saying "Regional Water Supply", and in front of it was a cow standing knee deep in a muddy, slimey watering hole on the adjacent property. The scene was perfectly composed, but I didn't have a camera with me! Grrr! I can't wait to see what people find!

I think the matter of whether perspective "distortion" is a Good Thing or a Bad Thing is largely subjective. My guess is that the person who coined the term "perspective distortion" considered it a Bad Thing. I think a better way to look at it is as "perspective control", in that in some cases, especially with extremely wide angle shots, the bending of what were straight lines can be so extreme that it draws the viewer's attention from the intended subject. And on the other hand perspective "distortion" can be used to the photographer's artistic advantage. Having control over the effect can only be a Good Thing. :-)One of the things that a View Camera can do that I haven't
been able to duplicate in postprocessing (aside from the
ultra-high resolution inherent in large format film) is to
tilt the lens and film planes. I wonder if it's even
possible for software to correct poor focus at all. I
suppose not.
P.S. For a really striking example of the sharpness of large
format photography, go to the link above and click on the
thumbnail of the photo of the joshua tree. Absolutely stunning.
