Thread: Need a bit of advice from the PS pros :) | Forum: Photography
As an experiment I increased the brightness and contrast a bit on the child and then used unsharp masking in order to darken and crispen her up. That seemed to help fit her into the scene better. It was just a quick test, so you might find that playing with the saturation, etc. might work even better. I think also the mushrooms in the upper left of the image need to re-placed because they seem to be lit from a different angle than their adjacent objects. Other than that I think it's a very good surreal, dreamlike image.

Well, I've tried a number of experiments, ranging from
shading the light source (with a piece of plastic shopping
bag material!) to almost nothing but bounce lighting (off
a wall to the left side of the subject). I can get rid of
the over-exposed areas, but then I loose the "long shadow"
effect that I was originally trying for. Any form of diffused
lighting that I've come up with softens the shadows to the
point of making them so indistinct that the effect is lost.
Gotta get some more lighting gear too. Clip on lamps with
100watt bulbs and sleeping bags draped over chairs just
don't cut the mustard! :-)
Thanks again for all your input; I've learned something about
lighting as a result.

Finder, The "S" is for Shure. It's a 55SW. Re: retouching my work and re-posting it. Pish-tosh! I consider it a complement that you find it interesting enough to mess with! Enjoy! (BTW: I really like the color inversion. Kinda looks like Bender's skull.)

Andrew,
Thanks for the description of the "Zone System." I'll have
to think about how that might be applied to digital "film."
Then I'll have to get a light meter. :-)

Yeah... If I can jack up the ambient light in the scene with a reflecter and reduce the exposure time to compensate... That might do it! I'll give it a try soon! Thanks again!

The drawing of the camera obscura reminds me of something my
older brother and I did as kids. We made a box camera with a
lens from a broken film camera and used blue print paper as
our film. Blue print paper is developed with ammonia vapor;
a very simple and forgiving process. Because of the insensitivity
of blue print paper, exposures were on the order of minutes
under the best of conditions. Needless to say, we didn't do
too many portraits with it!
