I'm not sure why that is happening (especially if you ungrouped the model). One possible work around for it would be to use a long cylinder textured with one of the "Soft glow" textures. Change the diffuse, volume and ambient colors to suit your taste, then turn up the ambience and transparency a bit. This makes a nice Laser cannon effect. Here's an example from my gallery.Thread: Bryce Camp 2002 | Forum: Bryce
Sounds cool, a little "pricey" but it looks like you get a lot for the money. If I can squirrel away enough cash between now and then I may check it out. It would almost be worth it just to be able to start stories with..."This one time, at Bryce camp..." hehe. (See "American Pie" if you don't get the joke;-))

Does that really mean "any product", ie: 3D products sold on daz3d for example? Or is it only for items sold in the renderosity store? Just curious because I have a pretty large inventory of items for sale on daz3d.com but none on renderosity.

That's great, it reminds me of the rock monster in "Galaxy Quest". Hehe, "look for it's weak spot" "It's made of rock, it doesn't have a weak spot!". Nice work.

Thread: aiming a spot light? | Forum: Bryce
You have 3DMaxitis. Aiming lights in Bryce is a piece of cake. After you create your light select the "Edit" palette at the top of the window. This allows you to move the light one axis at a time. It also helps if you select orthographic views when aiming each axis, ie: side, front, top. Bryce offers several ways of doing just about everything. You are trying to do it the way it is done in 3DMax, which is wrong for Bryce. If you read the manual, simple things like moving lights and objects on their axis, are explained and illustrated. I have been using Bryce since version 2 and I have never had a problem aiming a spotlight. In fact I use them all the time. Don't try using Bryce like 3DMax and you will have fewer problems. As a friend of mine is fond of telling me "It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools". The software works just fine and the lights don't "suck bigtime", you just don't have a feel for them yet.

It's easy enough to make one in Bryce using spheres grouped together to create the double helix. I did an animation a few years ago with a spinning DNA that I made this way. It looked pretty nice.
Thread: Bryce Lightning? | Forum: Bryce
A copy of Bryce Lightning comes with the Bryce5 CD and it is mentioned in the manual, which also comes with the CD. Any registered Bryce5 user should know this.

Hey if you want to spend a few bucks for a really sweet ship model you might want to buy the hankster's HMS Victory model in the renderosity store. I just bought it today for around $16, it's in 3ds format and super-realistic. I'm playing around with it in Bryce5 right now. It's awesome.
Thread: longest ever render! | Forum: Bryce
For one frame or an animation? Using the Premium Render feature in Bryce5 and the Depth of Field and Soft Shadows effects, some extra light sources, reflections, transparencies, etc.... On my G4 450 with 896MB RAM I've had massive renders like this go for 12 hours or more, but I usually make them several thousand pixels wide if I'm going to all that trouble, which also adds to the time. Some take so long I stop them in the middle and do a save. Depending on the size and complexity a full broadcast size animation (720x486) around 10 seconds can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days depending upon any of the factors mentioned above.

Also, when you post a message or reply to a post uncheck the little box below the text window that says "Notify: Email me when someone replies". It's always in the on position unless you uncheck it.

That is a great ship model, thanks for the link. I like 3dup.com, but that site always makes my Netscape Browser quit with a type 2 error after viewing a couple of pages. I think they might have some javascript error in their code. I managed to DL the ship and texture before it went "Tango Utah" on me. ;-)
Thread: can anyone tell me where i can get the bryce 5 corel 5.01 update | Forum: Bryce
Bryce Lightning is an added application that allows Bryce5 to use other computers on a network to speed up render time. You only need Bryce5 to be installed on one computer and Bryce Lightning on the rest and you have your own render farm. It divides up each frame into quadrants and assigns a quadrant to each machine on the network. When they are done rendering Bryce5 assembles them into one frame. It's very helpfull and time saving when using Bryce5 for animation. I guess the update fixes some bugs or issues with it.
Thread: Exporting from Bryce... | Forum: Bryce
Here's how you do it. If the object is exportable, ie: Any imported mesh, native terrain or symetrical lattice. Click on the object to export, next click on the little "E" for Edit that is visible when the mesh is selected. This will open the Edit window displaying two spheres (one rough, one smooth). Now push (Command) D on a Mac and probably (Alt) D on a PC. This will open another window with export options. If you are exporting and imported mesh you can change the format if you like from DXF or 3DMF, to OBJ, 3DS, among others. Select the format you want and click save. If you are exporting a terrain there will be a different window with more options for exporting textures along with it. I hope that helps you, good luck.
