Mother nature also provides good diffusion. Here in the pacific northwest, overcast skies make for one HUGE diffuser. of course you can't tell her where to hold it. Can't help you with flash (correctly anyway). I'm a natural available light person (I don't do studio or set portraiture).

I really like the composition of this image. I agree that the top right is a bit blown out. When you fix that ; ) you might try to burn the bright spots in the upper left corner too. I might also try to darken some of those other bright spots on the dark background. You wouldn't have to overdo it, just dark enough to not be as distracting. As it is now, I want to look at the palm frond but my eye keeps darting around to those other areas. Just something to mess around with. All in all this is a very nice image, and I think it is worth it to keep working with it.

Bogen 3221W with a custom head (3030 would be my next choice). The legs have a foam rubber padding on the upper third section. Good for cold weather grip and all around dent resitiance. This model comes with a strap so you can sling it over your shoulder (another plus of the rubber pads). When I bought my setup the tripod itself was around 190$ US. That was about 4 years ago. I haven't priced them or similar models since. Light tripods may be good for carrying around, but a good hefty one will ALWAYS be more stable and motionless. the 3221W , for me, is not too heavy and not too light. I use it for everything from 35mm - 4x5 in all conditions. O.K. I'm done sounding like a bogen salesrep. Don't ignore other models though. You are doing the right thing. This is definately a purchase that needs to be researched. Working with a bad tripod is hell.
Thread: Manual for a Minolta | Forum: Photography
http://www.manualsrus.com/ check the minolta auto in the little popup menu. the 7000 series are about halfway down. Hope this helps. My bet is that the two 7000 models are pretty similar, so either manual you choose will probably cover what you need. Sounds like a nice camera, I've had friends who have been very happy with their minotlas.

bogen is also my choice. You can get EXCELLENT bogen tripods for under 200$ (body, quickrellease heads etc.) Mine is light, strong, and stable enough to support a 4x5 in high wind. Model 3221W. Lots of choices though. I suggest getting one that doesn't limit how low you can get it to the ground by the spread of the legs.

Technically, the image you are capturing, on film or ccd, IS a reflection. If there were no reflected light rays, there would be no photography of any kind. What does this have to do with anything? I don't know. Just some random thought passing through the vacancy of my noggin. I think I've got my "reflection" shots. I've got this cool one of a lamp reflecting off my tv screen.........

Yeah, mirrors and wierd lighting can do some freaky things. I have done similar things by popping a flash in a dark room(shutter wide open) very eerie results.

I agree, this would be a very hard subject to capture in black and white (with drama anyway).
