Really, I'm impressed at the amount of vitriol you poured in here...

@ssgbryan Out of curiosity what figure do use currently, just one or do you use a few different base figures? Any chance of a link to some of your graphic novels? I know you used to do some Trekkie stuff but I haven't seen anything for a while.
As far as figures, I use every single figure I have collected since Dec 2004. I do this because vendors, by and large, don't change very much in their characters - they all look like they are closely related. This means I need a lot of different base meshes, so I can have many different characters...
Snipped for brevity
Thanks for that, it's always interesting to hear about others workflow.

Render time depends on a lot of variables for any figure, so it's hard to come out with a hard number.
You can modify some of the settings on any Dforce hair to make it easier to work with in a scene. A simple method is just to hide it until you are ready to render.

Interesting. I wonder if it could somehow be implemented in the Iray render setting for the viewport, to increase speeds when the camera or an item is moved. The initial versions of Iray did use DLSS in the (now removed) 'Realtime' mode.
But the new DLSS 3.0 is very different. It has a frame creation/insertion mode, not just the old resolution scaling of the previous DLSS. That's good for gaming, not much use for rendering.
Improved Tensor cores will make a difference in the Nvidia Denoiser.

I am not sure but as far as I know DLSS isn't currently supported by DS Iray, but who knows what's around the corner. I wouldn't buy it on the notion that it would be implemented anytime soon though. From the stats I can see there does seems to be a fair increase in Cuda cores, clock speeds and l2 cache between a 3090 and 4090. But you're right, it's hard to say if that increase justifies the price tags and power reqs of these newer cards. Especially with the changes in the Crypto arena affecting the second hand market.Razor42 posted at 1:05 AM Thu, 22 September 2022 - #4445005
Okay that's pretty interesting.. but this is the Daz Studio forum.
It seems like for most of this you're comparing a top of the range 3000 series with a mid range 4000 series. If you look at the bottom you can draw a direct comparison between a 3090 and a 4090.
I am sure dual 3080 would be awesome too.
Does Daz Studio use DLSS? If it doesn't, then the performance gains (that are almost entirely based on DLSS) are irrelevant. CUDA cores do matter, and that mislabeled 4070 has less than half of the 4090 CUDA corse - but it isn't half the price.
The 1st comparison between the 3090 and the 4090 is the price. New 3090s can be had for 900USD (used will be less in about 60 days) - a 4090 will start at 1599USD (FE); AIB boards will be around 2,000USD.
A 4090 isn't going to be twice as good as a 3090 - Nvidia's own slides show that almost all of the performance is based on DLSS.
The 4090 Ti will have a board power of 660 watts, not 800 watts - and it will need a 1600 watt PSU.
I am comparing the 3090 with the faux 4080 because they have the same price - they won't have the same performance - between the ram, the cuda cores, and the bandwith, the 3090 is a much better deal.Poser can use dual GPUs, which is why I am looking at them (along with a beefier power supply).

Yeah I did see some talk about that, I just noticed the graph above lists both 4080s with the 103.The usual sneaky marketing psychology from Nvidia. The 12GB 4080 (has that lower spec. AD104 core) it really should be called a 4070 but Nvidia know they can charge $300 extra if they call it a 4080!
Found a confirmation note regarding the different chipsets, quite a big difference. Here are the specs:

And as far as the breast size that you seem so concerned with ssgbryan
That was Rob Zhena, not me (we have the same avatar) and I am pretty sure he was being facetious.
My apologies, yeah the avatars threw me I guess.
Did they fix the shoulders? Those have been borked in every single DAZ figure since Vicky 1.
The shoulders haven't been an issue in the Genesis figures for a number of generations now. I would like to see an example of the issue in later generation figures?
8k textures only work in a render if everything is at that level, otherwise uncanny valley, all day, every day, and it looks like hot garbage. I don't do single image stills, so 8k isn't a plus. My characters also keep their clothes on, so bending has never been an issue either.
So you never do closeups or 3/4 shots of your characters? Out of curiosity what size do you render your images? Do you aim for realism or are happy with cartoon looking renders? Wearing clothing is irrelevant to the rigging performance of a base figure.
My issue is that when I have a lot of people in a scene (which is most of them - I do graphic novels); my system (8C\16T, 128Gb, & RTX 3060 12gb) slows to a crawl; 8k texture sets make it worse. I appreciate you showing me the texture compression tab - I'd look in the documentation, but the documentation is still a complete disaster after all these years.
Depending on what your preview window settings are the texture sets shouldn't greatly effect your scene usage much until render time. Crowded scenes always put pressure on any system, the more detailed and the more crowded the bigger the impact. There are a number ways of dealing with this such as compositing, or using lower res proxy figure or billboards. None of these devalue having a high resolution base character.
PendraiaFaeCreations - ram is cheap now. The correct amount of memory is the maximum amount of memory. BTW, how did you handle unisex clothing in G1? I found it to be a nightmare - most of the clothing was still designed for females (zippers, pockets, buttons on the wrong side, pant length, etc).

Lol, Well spotted... Oh and there are a few other differences between this and the Original Genesis figure.Basically Daz have gone back to the old Genesis 1 unified model with Genesis 9.
Here are a few I can think off the top of my head:
PBR material sets
Iray support
Dforce support
HD Morph support
An improved mesh
improved rigging
Asymmetry support
Industry standardisation in various areas
Honestly a unified mesh is a far better pathway to product support for a figure. The original Genesis had a number of issues in this area primarily around creating clothing that supported both shapes, but there were a few others too. The idea was solid back in 2011, it just had some technical limitations with the application of the idea to that figure. Hopefully Genesis 9 will resolve these issues giving end users a better experience with the unified mesh than the original Genesis figure delivered in 2011.

Here are a few more details about the new figure:
"Genesis 9 measurements have been meticulously crafted to match real-world averages. Paired with a more natural posture and the new Proportions System, creating and customizing realistic characters has never been easier. Genesis 9 advancements include:
8K HD Materials
Included standard with the base Genesis 9 figure.
Asymmetry Morphs
Give your characters more “character” with asymmetrical modifications.
Improved Posing & Animation
With enhanced bone hierarchy and industry-standard naming.
Real-World Proportions
Real-world measurements and a new Proportions System make realistic character customization easier than ever before.
Unified Figure
Blendability of cross-gender shapes brings next-level character diversity and support for add-ons like clothing, hair, accessories, and more.
…And More! "

Genesis 9 looks pretty awesome to me as both an artist and as a content creator. Far ahead of anything else on the market or even 'coming soon' to this sector.
8K is nothing crazy for a modern human figure, if you want close ups or some respectable level of realism in your renders. It has always been much easier to down sample images than it is to up sample low detail/resolution images for a high quality render. Anyways Daz Studio offers variable texture compression at render time if you're worried your system isn't up to it. And for background or distant characters there is no reason to use the higher resolution maps at all. So honestly I don't see what the issue is? You don't like optional high quality details?
And as far as the breast size that you seem so concerned with ssgbryan, there is this thing called morphs in most figures these days so guess what. Breast size is variable... I know you're poking fun but it seems to me that you can't see the forest for the trees. But hey if your biggest complaint is that Genesis 9 is too detailed then...

Sorry JAG, nice comeback... Ahh 2019, they were the days.... Don't worry you never hurt my feelings, I was a lot thornier back then. I hope you and yours are well.
