come to the conclusion that I am completely out of my depth
I don't think so. Are you posting your shots to please others or posting what you like. I just post what I like, if others like them, good, otherwise, so what!!
I think nobody is out of there depth, this is a place full of variety, thats what makes it a good site. I believe this site is a place to show, learn and have fun. The fun side has died a bit lately!! but the rest is great. I think that's why we stick around here.
I usually only shoot landscapes but lately started doing a few different shots. These shots hardly got any viewings or comments, but hey! I'm still and will keep plodding away and learning.
So, stick around. i've tried many other sites over the last 2 years and have deleted all the galleries from them. I'm here to stay, hope you are to. But if not, good luck.

Rubbish (Garbage)...a wee rubbish story...
We live on the West coast of Scotland, the high street runs along the loch side for 1.5 miles, tourists stop for a look and decide to picnic on the high strret. The weekends are the worst, loads of tourists. Well anyway, we were out for a walk down the high st, and a couple are sitting the car eating, Next thing a banna skin flys out of the window onto the ground. There are rubbish bins all down the high street for people to use.
Irene (adorable wife) goes up to the car and picks up the skin and throws back into the car. I think to myself, here we go...
Out flys the skin onto the floor again. Irene goes upto the driver and states that we live here and sick of the tourists rubbish on the floor and shows him the bins. She also states that 'you tourists come here to see the wonderful views but ruin it with your rubbish'. Yes it ends up in a row.
So yes, rubbish is a world wide problem, on land and water. It's peoples attitude that need to change.
Phew!! I'll stop now.

Miranda
I mainly shoot landscapes so only use 100 or 200 rarely, but the other week I was doing a project for a friend indoors and had to change to 400 because I was using only available local lighting. The shots did not show any grain, Canon 10D. From the shots in your gallery I can't see why you would use anything else than 100 ISO.
Basically if you you can acheive the shutter speed and / or apperture that you require for the shot use 100 ISO. Only change to 200 or 400 if there is not enough light. Never tried 800 or 1600 but I might have a go at the weekend just to find out.
I'm sure someone here will point you in the right direction on the technical side.
Hope this helps a wee bit.
