Thanks for the quick replies - I knew Carrara came with earth textures, but I thought they were the average textures that are automatically put into the shader bin. Thanks for the info Waldo - those maps are great.

Have you tried doing a sky dome? It gives a different effect than just placing things as a background. Here's a good tutorial on how to do one... http://www.maxoncomputer.com/tutorial_detail.asp?tutorialID=54 After you've created the image, make a large shpere and map that image to it. It should work okay for you. Also check out www.rustboy.com if you would like to see some amazing examples.

You may want to try making a sky in bryce or terragen and doing a 360 render from bryce or terragen and using that in carrara. It might be easier than doing a camera match.

that's a good tip, but when I do that I don't get the desired glow strength in the shadows.

That's the problem it is for an animation. I know that 3DS has a falloff map that you can set to self-illuminate in the dark but not in the light. Does Carrara have that option?
