yea its a bit better and by that I mean at least the texture shows up on the face plate but its al catywompis next try box :P
Thread: help making a template | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - You need a far better UVMapper than me but are you sure the texture is on the right part of the template. Try it on the bottom part where the 'cross' is. Also, again speaking mostly from ignorance, I would think that cylindrical is not the best map. I would have tried planar or box.
panner was a me box gave me the smat thin a cylindrical cap + 3 addtional views so I will try that one as well and thanks for the tips

okay thank you all for the help I have fixed the problem... once I got the map open in UV mapper all I had to do to get the map to look like NES controler was go to Edit>New UVmap> Cylindrical capped ... and whala...what is funny about this is I was just mucking about for fun ...
Thank you all for your help and sugestions I'd hug you all, but I am sure some of you aren't huggers and considering the cost of plane tickets that would be some expensive hugging :P

Quote - My last, no doubt crazy idea. You’re probably going to want to use procedural plastic materials on this thing. The only rub is the ‘faceplate’ ‘To avoid UVMapper entirely, I : Load the model into Poser. Do the parts show up, each with a material? If not and the groups are there, I you can use Poser’s grouping tool to select each part/group and assign it a material as needed and save it to the prop library. Take a one-sided square, scale it to match the front of the unit and position it so that it sits against the face with the buttons protruding above it. Voilà, you have a faceplate. Parent it to the body/case and save. Note the X/Y size ratio of the faceplate. In your image editor, create a new image with the same ratio in any size you like. Create a new layer and draw a couple of numbered reference lines on it, one horizontal, one vertical like crosshairs. You can create a numbered grid for more accuracy. Export as a jpg and in Poser, apply it to the faceplate.
Now, using your reference lines or grid, you can see pretty much where the lettering needs to go. I’d use the NES graphics I pointed out in the other thread and size them down as required. It would probably be best to have a separate layer for each graphic, e.g. Nintendo, Start etc. Work back and forth between Poser and your editor, until you get everything positioned and then save everything except the reference layer to your final faceplate graphic. The alternative would be decaling an image I imagine but that is beyond me - either that or maybe have your friend do a separate faceplate but that would still need to be UVMapped.
Hope this all make sense ÷) Good luck with this and I'd love to see the final image.
this might work nicely as well...

Quote - "yeah it doesn't open in my free version and I can't make head or tails of the map"
If it doesn't open, how are you seeing the map? If you get the message you posted about no UV coordinates, click OK. Go to the options for creating a new UV map and try some of them to see if you get something more usable or try the tile method detailed before maybe. Short of getting someone else to UVMap it for you, you're stuck with doing it in post. * *
the guy who made it send me a PNG veriosn of the unwrapped map he got which is much like the one posted above...very confusing

Quote - I'm confused. The model you sent me has a map already, and opens fine in UVMapper - both versions.
yeah it doesn't open in my free version and I can't make head or tails of the map, tried color coding to see where stuff goes and it end up all funky so thier isn't a defined spot where the buttons are the corss hair etc, it just a odd jumble that makes it imposible to add the textures I need like the lettering and the grey bars on the controller but if that is the best the map is gonna com out thats cool I have back up plan that just involves photoshoping post render :P

Quote - I'll see how complex it is before making any rash promises. ;-)
Provided your friend is happy for the model to be redistributed, my address is at the link. (It's protected from spambots on that page.)
yeah he is cool with it IF you can do it, it would be cool if you tried to tell me how (like what program and the steps taken, so I can pass it on to him, he has been learning blender and this just has him stimed

Quote - UVMapper is reading the object fine - as the message says, the object has no UV mapping which is a perfectly legitimate state of affairs.
It will need mapping, of course, before you can fix your issue with a texture map. More than that I cannot say without knowing more about the model.
if you think you can help feel free to shoot me a pm and I will send you the model ^_^ it would be much appreciated

here is the error I get
Thread: Making a template from .3ds or .obj files | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - I truly feel sorry for any poor bastard who tries to untangle that mess of an .obj for you, I just tried and the object has out of range uv data (off the uv space) to begin with and also has some of the worst topology I've ever seen (38,500 polys for a Nintendo Gamepad?, No material regions only groups, loads into poser with only a preview material). The only available file formats are a wreck of an .obj, Maya's FBX 7, and .max...
The only way I could see somebody being able to generate templates from the .obj would be to remap the whole thing which would require redistribution of the object file. Pretty sure that's not in the license. The mapping as is would require the uv islands to be scaled and moved around and would require the object to be resaved with the adjusted maps.
Sorry man, I'm pretty certain that this model was never intended for Poser...
yeah I am not surprised, kinda seemed like too much of a mess to deal with, thanks for taking a look. Its cool they have a few cheap payable ones and turbo squid offers free file conversion (you have to call to ask first), so if I can find one for a good price they will do it on then I'll get that one... Unless any one else knows another place that might have a classic Nes controller freebie lol
thank you to every one for your advice I am sure it will be helpful in the future

Quote - Try this...Select All materials, uncheck the material you want to isolate for a map, press the minus key which will shrink all of the selected maps, click and drag selected maps off to the side. now you have a template of that isolated material. Any variation of this technique should get you off in the direction you want to go... see illustration. (click for larger).
think the problem is a) no real place to drag things to b) I have no idea what to drag away / shut off it is such a mess... thanks for the help though
