Quote - Renders for print generally require high dpi/resolution, perhaps not so good for gpu rendering which is more limited by available RAM?
I can render an image that's 3200x2400 px. That gives me a 10x8 Inch image at 300 dpi. At 200 dpi it's 16x12 inches. I haven't tried to render any bigger but don't know of any limitation in that regard.

Quote - News to me... Only gpu assisted for preview as far as I know
That's what I thought and the OpenGL preview is just that, a preview. But why would GPU renderers fail at rendering for print? I fail to see how you can fail to print renders based on the renderer it comes from.

All this talk about Octane vs. Vue or any other renderer for that matter is a load of old BS if you ask me. Are there bad renders being done with Octane? Of course. Are there bad renders being done with Poser and Vue? Oh yes! Getting a new renderer doesn't automatically make your images better. If you're bad at lighting and posing with Poser, Octane, Reality or Vue won't fix that problem for you. I bought Octane after trying out the demo. I like how fast it renders and how it handles lighting and materials. That being said I still have a lot to learn to get the most out of it. It also suit me personally since I have a very old system but a new GTX660 graphics card (bought for computer gaming).

Quote - Space yes, electricity I don't think it differs much, gpu rendering uses a lot of power. Resources, no, all the things is built to do is render. Of course you can get a different cpu, a workstation with 8 cores / 16 threads or more that would be less space consuming. The thing is, for me it's a trade off. I render with Poser and Vue. Vue is purely cpu, poser can do both now..... but, I render for print, so huge renders and gpu rendering will fail there. So, for me (and many others), building our own small rendering farm where the focus lies on the cpu is the best option.
If I would only use poser, it would perhaps be a whole different story, but still the render size would be a major issue.
Poser does GPU rendering? Am I missing something?

I still use it with Zbrush 4 and the only problem I have with it that it doesn't export the UV map with the object.

Just make sure you realize how long the render time is. You'll need to get used to hours of render time. There is no quick render option when it comes to Luxrender.

I recently bought both Reality and Octane and I'm really loving Octane. You'll need a good card though to get the most out of it. I have a GTX660 and it does a good job. The renders are super fast bit you still get SSS, good IDL etc. Octane is a more expensive however but I'd recommend it over Reality.
Thread: Some questions I have about Reality 3.0 - Anybody? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Here's what I know:
Yes
OpenCL concerns GPU acceleration. AMD are better than Nvidia in this regard. You don't need opencl to render with Reality.
It sends the entire file to Reality. You select the render location in the render window.
PNG, EXR and Targa. PNG supports alpha transparency.
For me Reality is much slower than Poser. The point with Reality is not speed but unbiased rendering. I'm no expert on the matter but the lighting is vastly superior to Poser.

Quote - I know this is a "small" nitpick compared to preformance, but there are a lot of big blocky icons right in the middle of the screen. I tend to minimize the number of icons (can you get rid of those boxes) and keep them to the sides so I can look at my pretty backgrounds.
You can configure to be anyway you like. You can move add or remove programs and you can group them simply by dragging them around. You can also name the groups as you want. There is also a addon available somewhere that gives you the old Start button. I think you can even make it look like Windows XP or Vista Start button.
Edit: Also, the start menu isn't the desktop. One thing that's changed for me is that I don't keep anything on the desktop any more so there's more room for lovely backgrounds and wallpapers ;)

I've been using Win8 Pro 64 bit for quite some time now and I can't complain. It's stable and I haven't had any problems with games, new or old. Still, my advice is to go with your gut. W7 is tried and tested and I couldn't advise getting W8 yet.
Thread: Can someone unemotionally state the advantages of Genesis over V4/M4 in Poser? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Here's my experience of Genesis so far...
First off let me say that I've been a huge fan of V4 and I worked on V4WM so we could get the most out of our V4 stuff in P9/PP2012. That being said I decided to try out the DSON importer to see how Genesis worked in Poser (it was free after all).
The first thing I noticed was the bending. I think it's safe to say that there is no figure in Poserdom that bends as well as Genesis.
The second thing I noticed was that I could use all of my old V4/M4 materials. That was pretty great.
After some testing and researching I found out that I can convert all my old Gen4 clothes through Daz Studio and that let to something AMAZING! When you've succesfully converted clothing for Genesis all your morphs work on the clothing in Poser. That means you can use V4 clothing on Genesis, V5, M5 and any character you own for Genesis including M4 and V4 :)
I then went and bought Genesis Generation X and that made it possible to export all my old Gen4 morphs to Genesis. That's right! NGM, NBM, Elite etc. all work on Genesis in Poser and the morphs can be transferred to any clothing item as well!
It's wrong that you have to buy stuff for hundreds if dollars to enjoy Genesis. With a little work you can use most of your old stuff.
So to answer the OP question, Genesis can be M4, V4 and a whole lot more!!

Oh, that's just in the preview. It has something to do with how the DSON plugin works with SubD (I think). It renders beautifully though.

Quote - > Quote - I was really agains the Genesis "revolution" but Daz has really turned me over with the new Dson importer. The image above explains why. It's Genesis with a fat M5 morph in pants from V4 with M4 materials. Yes, I did have to buy a morph pack or two BUT I can use all of my existing V4 and M4 mats, clothes, props and hair and
Complete with visible body part joints? What gives there?
D.
