I thought the manual documented that particular step. You can export things in Bryce 4 using the procedure that Matt mentioned, but I've never successly exported something in a format different than what it was imported as. In other words, Bryce doesn't work very well as a translator. Also Bryce doesn't export things grouped or booleaned in Bryce. You can't import two items in Bryce, group them and then export them. I'm not sure what modifications one would do to an object in Bryce that couldn't be done better in a native modeller, so the real question might be, exactly what are you trying to do? Bryce 4 also exports all of its terrains (and probably lattices) It seems .3ds export is the most volatile and .obj format the most likely to succeed.
Thread: bryce and dual-pentium? | Forum: Bryce
I have a dual 350 Mhz PII setup under which I run both NT 4 and Win 98. There's not much benefit of using dual processors. There is some small benefit to using NT of about five percent. Under NT, the performance meter sez I'm hitting each processor at about fifty percent. I have seen it hit fifty-three percent, but maybe the procs' are running additional programs. Your 866Mhz PIII machine with 512 Meg of RAM is only twice as fast as your 200 Mhz Pentium II? There's gotta be something wrong there, just based on clock speed. I got a jump from my Pentium Pro 200 to my 350 Mhz machine of about 1.7, pretty much equivalent to the increase in clock speed. Also, Bryce ought to be just swimming with all that RAM. You're not trying to run SETI in the background or some other nefarious cycle-byter are you? But Render times are slow, no matter what. I'm running a thirty-hour render at home right now. Its just a tree, and a few terrains, but I prefer to use the artistic antialiasing and 2048x1576 renders.

I thought that Bryce imported 3dmf. Maybe it was Bryce 2. Too bad you're on a MAC. XDimension Software has an affordable ($40) program called 3D Exploration that does a great job of converting .3dmf objects to .obj or .3ds formats. Unfortunately its only for a Win9x or NT. The link is included below, just in case you can run it in an emulator...Thread: Kasoburo hair not working properly on Bryce. | Forum: Bryce
For clarification only, I think Harie meant to say that the transmap isn't automatically impported into Bryce. One needs to map each hair item individually in Bryce. By the way, look forward to very long render times in Bryce. Each transmap adds a level of complexity that makes a render in Bryce of a character with the Kozaburo (sp?) hair a test of ones patience, even on fast machines. I only did it once and at 1048x768 (and artist quality anti-aliasing), I seem to recall waiting a few days for my machine to finish the portrait. I use a dual processor 350 Mhz PIIs and 128 Meg Ram, not that the dual processors help any in Bryce.

Beautiful, I feel a strong affinity for the scene. I used to watch the iridescence on soap bubbles when I was doing dishes as a kid, which of course led to bad trouble from the 'rental units. So I can imagine a kid too busy watching the sky to finish the dishes in the sink. But maybe you were headed in a different direction. Still its wonderful!

Don't do what I did: I couldn't get 4.1 to load, and Corel's direction recommended doing a clean load of Bryce 4. I did that without thinking, and I saw all my custom materials and skies get overwritten... Oh well, I can just open all of my old Bryce files and rebuild the library, its just going to be a lot of work. I should have copied the material and sky libraries to a different directory first.
Thread: Carrara's renderer, a comparison to Bryce... | Forum: Carrara
most humble apologies, I just assumed that the default glass in Carrara would already have refraction set. I'm the dummy for not checking. Thanks!
Thread: Help! The poser 4 hair I created won't import into bryce! | Forum: Bryce
Have you got it loaded yet? Try exporting the file as a .dxf from poser. Some of the comments on the metacreations site (when they were still having the little weekly seminars) seem to indicate that Bryce 4 has no upper limits on .dxf format files, not that I believe too many people are pushing the 10 meg limit, (Onyx Tree Pro does, but then again, it models every leaf, stem, twig, branch, etc...) But actually, I think you are SOL till you figure out a way to reduce your file size. If you have 3Dsmax, why are you bringing it into Bryce? Doesn't 3Dsmax have a superior renderer? Also, does 3Dsmax have a way to reduced vertex density. I'm just starting to use Cararra and I thought I saw that on one of the menus. Maybe you can you cut it in to two halves, bring one in and create a mirror image in Bryce, group together and voila. I really suspect that you will have to reduce the model size some way for it to load into Bryce. Its not a hardware problem either, as you obviously have sufficient firepower there.

More Questions: Why did I try to reply in the Poser forum? How big is the file? What program did you model your hair in? What file format are you using? Are you using Bryce 4? Bryce 3D used to spit and die (same message) when I tried loading anything above 8-10Meg on .dxf formats (running on a Pentium Pro 200 with 128 Meg of Ram and no programs running in the background). I think I tried converting the files (tree files created by Onyx Tree Pro) using Ray Dream with no success. Bryce 4 handles large models much better, not that I try to load much more than 10 Meg at a time though ;-) Also, not all modellers create completely compatible products even when the extensions are the same. *.wrl VMRL format files seem to have the most incompatibilities. Poser seems to create the most stable products, You might try using Poser as a translator, exporting your hair from Poser in a .3ds format or as an .obj format. I also had some luck in dividing the models and loading parts separately, tree branches as one load, leaves as another, etc. Bryce 3D could handle about 50 Megs of scenery on the above machine, but once again Bryce 4 is vastly better at that. By the way, Bryce has some mondo problems when handling fancy hair. I'm rendering Yamato/Kozaburo's Nene411SE in Bryce 4 right now, at 1024 x768 resolution fine quality anti-aliasing, it looks like its going to take 3 days+ to render on a Pentium II 350 Mhz with 128 Meg of Ram >:( I think its all those wonderful transparency maps.

Are you using Bryce 3D? Bryce 4 handles large models much better than Bryce 3D. Scaling the model doesn't change the size of the file. One needs to change the number of data points. With Bryce 3D, I would run into out of memory error whenever I tried to load a model more than 10Meg for .dxf formats. (I wasn't loading that large of models in .obj format). This was on a Pentium Pro 200 with 128 Meg of RAM and tons of hard drive space. I haven't run into a limit with Bryce 4.
