Thread: making groups in vertex modeler, and exporting for use in UVMapper | Forum: Carrara
thanks guys for the interesting comments. I've been experimenting with the shading domains names and going from there; I may have viewable results soon.
Thread: I could really use some help with modelling. | Forum: Carrara
I once read an article about how to approach modeling complex items. The author basically broke it down into three steps. The first step is to create the largest most important forms. Don't worry about details at this point; just get the relative shapes in place. Next, look for secondary forms on the object and model those. Then third, look for all the tiny details and do those last.
It's real easy to get overwhelmed by modeling all the little stuff. That three step approach has helped me work through some blocks.
FWIW- I've been working on modeling off and on since Ray Dream v3. Only recently have I had the guts and patience to use the vertex modeler!
Thread: sweep path in Carrara 4 vertex modeler | Forum: Carrara
yes, I was... and no, the cross section wasn't centered in the plane. See, I know the dimensions the sweep path would describe, so I set the bounding box to that size, to make it easier to draw that path. Then I slid the cross section to one side, and used that as my starting point to draw the path. Sounds like this is a no-no.

That's the modeler I started with, but the cross section distorted horribly along the lengths. So that's why I moved it into the vertex modeler.
Thread: zooming with camera presets | Forum: Carrara
Very good.. Thanks!!! I love keyboard shortcuts, but they're not always readily apparent in the manual. I cut & pasted your tips into a stickie for easy reference until they're committed to memory.

Ah, yes. The right-click/control click thing...mmmmm....yes.... but how come in the director's camera view, when zoomed waaay out, I get that nasty perspective effect on the working box? Ugh.
Thread: Missing the tops of the Trays | Forum: Carrara
Actually, the Command key is the equivalent. Make sure you grab a portion of the tray that is not the little tab thingy you use to expand the tray while still attached to the monitor edges.

Make sure you haven't scrolled down the tray windows. There's an unobtrusive little slider that one can easily overlook - I know firsthand about this....
Thread: Raydream ???? | Forum: Carrara
As for Ray Dream patches, I believe there's a recent thread on this forum that ends up with a link to a website with said patches.
Thread: raydream 5 on mac os 9.2.2 program not booting?????? | Forum: Carrara
...Just to muddy the waters... Last patch that I saw was to take 5.0.2 up to 5.0.4. But I had to upgrade from 5.0 to .0.2 and then up. Ugh. Also, check any new extensions you may have loaded in. I discovered (after much trial and error and wailing and gnashing of teeth) that QuicKeys was incompatible with RDS.
Thread: animation spin problem | Forum: Carrara
My guess: that maybe you inadvertently resized your gear object somewhere down your timeline...
Thread: I just need to vent | Forum: Carrara
My biggest frustration so far is the preset camera views. In RDS, when I would resize the working box in the modeling mode, the views would maintain their positions relative to the box. In Carrara, that doesn't appear to be true. right on, sfdex - eovia seems to take perverse joy out of creating the only OS X app that takes over the screen. :P
Thread: I just need to vent | Forum: Carrara
I'm running version 2. Yeah, there was a QuickTime dingus that I've just been skipping over... I guess I'll fire that bad boy up and see what's there.
