I think we need to be clear about what is being talked about.
Some processors have a large FSB (pentium 4 issueB has a 533Mhz sideband bus.) What does that mean - in a water analogy the pipe is bigger letting more water through for work.
Thats why Pentium 4's currently beat AMD processors, not because of the speed of the processor but rather the amount of cache ram (letting it do more on-cpu work) and the bigger RAM bus (oops pun there for the geeks)
What does this mean in real life- you need to have a processor and motherboard that accept higher rated DDR ram, the RAM speed must be matched to the motherboard specs, otherwise the increased speed of the ram may lead to instability (particularly in older AGP graphics cards).
Base recommendations- if you are buying RAM check with the dealer for compatibility. If you are building from the ground up, Buy some of the newer chipsets and check the maximum amount of ram you can put in the said board- some motherboards on accept certain amounts of the higher speed ram.
I run a couple of very high spec computers (pentium 4 and AMD ) Speed differences between the machines could only be measured in milliseconds at the higher rates)Poser runs faster on these machines naturally but both have been matched very carefully to the maximum ram speeds that the motherboard can handle.
More Ram seems to be the secret for poser though, its a glutton.
And yes I am a sad old geek

Compartment is just about right. Reminds me of the days that I got onto the 7:12 from Tunbridge Wells to London Bridge. Just to Annoy the denizens of the first class carriage I frequented (mostly bean counters and solicitors) I would read Harry Potter and Pratchett! I knew I had struck home when the newspapers rustled in anger. Thanks for the super model,Steve. Now all we want is the accompanying wav file.." Connex SouthEast regrets ..." PaulC

Thanks Pizazz got it!
Leonids a very sore subject at this point - we(The British Isles) were meant to go through the shower between 01:30 and 03:00 GMT so Narsil wraps up in his thermals and heads out to the observatory with a load of other loonies.
01:00 - thick fog
03:00 - thicker fog
03:10 - fog so thicK you can hardly see the car bonnet(we are talking pea souper here).
04:00 Back home-Narsil crashes out on sofa to spare waking up wifey
06:00 Wifey pokes Narsil awake - you guessed it, from the house she had a wonderfully clear grandstand view of the Leonids when she got up in the night for a glass of water.
One sheepish and foolish Narsil!!

Hiya I read that review too,via slashdot. I was interested however that the 3.6Ghz engineering sample that he had seemed to thrash everything in sight - including the 3.06 HT sample. I also think that the extra grunt will be beneficial somewhere. Now if we can press for a multi-threaded OpenGL V2.0 version with Mac OS/Linux capability and network rendering..leave me alone get your hands of me sir I'm perfectly sane I tell you Hahahahaha ! soung of ambulance doors closing....
Thread: 1963 Jaguar XKE Roadster | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hi Strangely enough I drove one of these last weekend. I drive a Lotus 7 in my wilder moments and my associate has an XKE-type in a garage that he lets out on the weekends to terrify the other users of the A4 in Wiltshire. My impressions of the E-Type (to paraphrase Ford Prefect in the HitchHiker Guide to the Galaxy) "looks like a fish, drives like a cow" .. Really as long as you are going in a straight line you are OK as soon as you turn a corner -oh dear! Lovely model by the way, Dudley you're going from strength to strength .. Let me know when you finish the car PaulC

Hi earlybird(I thought I was the only one that worked these dawn hours) Your problem I do not know if this is a firefly render or a poser 4 render. If it is a firefly render try lowering the maximum shading rate(in firefly render options) from 2.00 to 0.100 this causes the texture to be sampled at a higher rate. Hope this helps PaulC

Hiya I am always polite to my poser people (well apart from my favourite martian-Judy) I engage them constantly in (one sided) conversation. After all we are subjecting them to all manner of indignities,Hand Here, leg there, sit down, stand up, the least you can do is to be polite. My partner is used to my anthromorphising all of my machines. I often use a mirror for expressions and actually get up out of the chair and pose myself to get it right in my my mind how the posed figure should look. Luckily I work upstairs with a tree growing outside my study window or else I would have concerned neighbours banging at the door asking my girlie if I was "alright" Don't worry this business brings out the eccentric in all of us. Ask your partner why he shouts at the television next time he is watching football. PaulC

Thanks so much for the Partial poses. Inspiration will come back. Its the mind behind the tool (brush, camera, hammer and chisel, computer) that counts. Keep your chin up PaulC
Thread: *sigh* OK, I think I'll retire as a texturer after seeing this.... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hi BlackHearted I had a similar problem I found that by reducing the shading rate in the firefly render options to about 0.5 and upping the texture resolution to 4096 seemed to do the job. I tried this both on X2 altered textures and original textures. Dowmside of this is that it increases render time. Upside is that firefly is more accurate with textures. Hope this helps PaulC
Thread: 1968 Mini Cooper MkII revisited | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
ehem I used to have a Mini. It cornered like mad, went pretty quick- but had no sound proofing to speak of, had a strange string thingie that closed the door and if you wanted to go any distance the best thing to do is to wear ear plugs - I went to see my sister in Colchester from where I lived (just outside London)- around 80 miles- and was so deafened that I couldn't hear what she was saying! The newer ones were much better and some of the specials even had proper door handles! (fact) The latest BMW mini are just the Bees Knees - as fast as the old mini and far more comfortable Dudley love your cars. What I would really like is a model of the MiniMoke - a sort of cross between a landrover and a Mini - If you are a viewer of sixties TV shows and you may have picked up a program called the Prisoner the little taxis in the village were minimokes. I'm doing some stuff for one of the fan sites and a minimoke could come in rather useful. PaulC
Thread: Quickbeam the Ent Uploaded | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for the upload Congrats on tackling probably the most difficult of the LOTR characters. (I mean Shelob -giant spider, orcs -loads of em here, wizzards -knee deep in 'em posed in caves and temples, when vicky isn't using them:-), but ents? well theres a difficult one.... For the poor sad members of this Forum that haven't read Lord of the Rings (but have seen the film) Ents will appear in the next film of the trilogy. Go out and buy or steal the book, read it then read it again - you'll find something new in the second, third etc. reading. I've read LOTR off and on since I was fifteen (I am now coming up to fifty) and everytime I read read it I find something different. Marque, with something like the Ents I think it would have to be non commercial, otherwise NewLine Cinema and WETA would be saying some extremely unkind things. PaulC

Thread: I feel I got ripped off with Poser5 | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I am one of the "lucky" ones - that carefully read all the threads, upgraded all of the system drivers and made sure that there were no rogue DLL's wandering around my system.
When It came to install I switched everything off except for the few services needed to load the beast. I had automatic (and painless) registration. I drefragged and then did a physical disc check to write all bad sectors off the Hard discs - there are always a couple.
So with the amount of pre preparation (maybe two days of and on) and the amount of worrying and second guessing what could go wrong (weeks) Yes I guess you can say I was "lucky" - or extremely careful.
It paid off. I have a working, very stable Poser 5.
In my thirty odd years of working with computers (yes DaveSo I have worked with Crays- you really wouldn't like them) I have got very wary about new software. Corporate buyers would not buy Windows 2000 when it first appeared until the first service pack was released. 3Dmax had horrible problems with their hardware dongle when it was first released. The first Windows NT server I ever saw shut down the network when its screen saver switched (reason- uncompiled code for the screensaver)
IMHO CL was paniced into releasing Poser 5 - it needed the money and the user expectation was so high. I really needed a longer period of beta testing.
I am not one on the CL dancers(I look lousy in a tutu)
Just somebody who is careful and very patient.

Hi Normally have Outlook, PhotoShop and Poser 5 open. Have run Max 3.1 with above with no problems. From Windows NT upwards(Win2k and XP) the OS is a pre-emptive Multitasking environment. I can only repeat EricofSD comments on the poser install. Strange thing was I went through some very strange BSOD problems way before Poser 5 and cleared out my system of all kinds of junk.
