I have been using V6Infinite build 292350 rendercows sucessfully across a mixed platform of two Macs (OSX 10.4 and Leopard) and a PC (XP). It seems to work rendering across two different platforms quite well. I haven't tried initiating from the PC side though, I am running batch render and HyperVue from the Mac. You might try from the Mac side and see if anything is different. And it is very important that the rendercows all have the same version as this was a problem for me early on as the PC version was different and not auto updating. Re-installing solved the problem.

Interesting problem. It doesn't sound like adjusting the AA would do much here. I don't have any answers but am surprised someone hasn't chimed in with a suggestion. Maybe a short example clip might help inspire a solution?

Thread: The RANCH V2 is online! | Forum: Vue
I was reading about the Ranch service online and it says it requires a PC program called 7-zip but on the 7-zip page, it doesn't seem to be available for the Mac. Is there a Mac program that can decompress these files too? The Mac can automatically decompress regular zip files so is the 7-zip format different? Just wondering....

Flak, Thanks for the tip. And judging by your very nice gallery images (particularly Amarri-Tath)... http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1460140&member it seems what you say looks to be true in Vue. Can you tell us what AA settings you used on an image such as this to get rid of ropework/rigging line type issues? Greg

Beautiful shots....except the distant shots where the ropes turn into dotted lines. Why does Vue do this? Is there any way around this problem? It becomes much more glaring with animations.

Great news! Mark and Chipp, Its great how you guys are helping to explore the limits of Vue and provided added value to other users. Kudos to you both! Greg

I don't see this on the front page anymore. Is there an archive somewhere I where I can still read it?
Thread: Using another app for rendering question | Forum: Vue
I wonder if you could use a mask in front of the camera to block out selective areas to render so you don't need to do overlaps (as you would with stitching)? The thing to do would be to test it with a smaller image first unless possibly someone has already tried this. I vaguely recall someone mentioning this idea before... not sure where though.

Has anyone tried rendering several different angles of a large scene with a narrower focal length and then stitching the photos together with a camera stitching program?

Yes Dale, I agree with your comments for the most part. Its surprising that so few 3d animators study and utlize cinema movements the way film makers and videographers do. Yet, the end goals are often the same. I have looked into books on this myself and there are very few I could find. It seems that camera motion and cinema direction is something that isn't so easy to teach or capture in words. So aside from experience, I wonder how aspiring film makers and videographers learn these critical skills? And how might 3d animators best learn? I think some of the techniques that Philippe uses go beyond the realm of physical cameras and typical camera motion. For example, his sudden "fly up into action" at the beginning of shots is rather unusual in film other than maybe on gonzo shooting such as with Blair Witch. Yet, its a very interesting move. And his overshoot and oscilation back to the target is also unusual but somehow feels uncannily natural as we tend to do this with our eyes more than with film cameras. Well, it seems this thread has been hijacked (but for a truly good cause) as we continue down the Road of interesting discussion on 3d animation techniques. Well here's an interesting cookie: Check out the "Strada Explained" button in the link below to see how far a real camera crew will go to emulate what we can easily do in 3d. This is very cool: ]http://www.fluid-images.com/

So how does one update the cows on a Mac if the update doesn't work correctly?

Not if there's a way to scale polygons based on their being in the field of view and close to the camera. I think there's a technical name for this - its used by gamers (LOD?) but I never understood why it couldn't be also implemented for 3d rendering too. At least in the scene setup phase it would be a great way to manage scenes with massive amounts of polys. Ah, but these are the dreams the Vue Engineers should be having. I wonder what they're thinking...
