I'm impressed, both by the image and the file size. But where do you archive 1.0 gig. DVD writer? Really, Alpha this really shows what can be done with the combination of vision, talent and tools. Thanks,

The advice to get a larger card is real. They are now about 50 cents a megabyte. Figure this way at 72 per inch 1200 pixels is a lot of viewing. At 300 per inch it is 4 inches of print. Since you can often print at lower resolution or with some software increase the resolution it is possible to get decent 8" x 10". You won't want to figure on cropping much. After a few shots taken through the process you will have some definite opinions and images to share

My comment about "engineers" referes to all those involved in the "requirements" package. Actually involving users or customers in the process is realitively recent. (My BSME is 50 years old) When I get questions about buying digital cameras I always point out that a film scanner would be a good alternative for those who have an investment in equipment and experience with film. Particularly for medium to high end work above 8 x 10.

You have the best list of negatives that I have read. Many of your comments are very true, some are camera specific. Keep testing a few more units. Since I use a Nikon 880 and have for a year. I have gotten some very good photos and have learned a lot about the genre. I have controls to modify many of your objections. They are there but hard to learn and use. I believe the crossover to digital is a few models in the future. When the engineers go talk to the real photographers about using a camera they will give us some decent units to choose from.

Some good examples of what can be done with everyday images and a little photo post work. Keep up the good work. This is the place to test your ideas and hone your skills. Every image is a learning experience for the artist and the viewer.

SS, The reference to "years ago", comes from the relative humor associated with my years. When I reference "years ago" it means about 20,30 or 40. My first serious photos were in 1953. I had a 35mm and a 4x5 press camera and did portraits of other GI's and unit operations. I still have the negatives. Bill

"years ago" ? It has a lot of feeling. I would get the horizon level as much as possible and carefully lighten the center to add to the focus on the children. What was the essay theme? Bill

I know the place. The old Cathedral in the picture. The French Quarter could keep a photographer busy for days. It kept me busy in 1956. Now the picture. A little closer to the window would have been better. The frame in the middle is too strong. Good angle on the buildings and good exposure.

Thank you everyone! The print from the 8.0 meg working file is very good, even better than the 196 kb version shown. When you get good advise and follow it, good things result. We are going to see the Art Exhibtion "Gifts to The Tsars" tommorrow. That should be fun
Thread: Is the sky "too" dark? | Forum: Photography
I can see detail in the highlights, so they are not washed. As for the sky, very subjective idea of what you think you want the image to say. I would say keep working with the subject. You will find some more ideas that you like.
