I am in the process of transfering my knowledge of the traditional zone system into digital techniques.....
In theory it shouldn't be all that much different, but in reality it is VERY different. The basics are all still there and pretty much the same, but getting in a little deeper things start to get tricky...A ccd is more like shooting transparency film, so right off the bat things get flipped around all backwards....expose for the shadows...nope expose for the highlights and develop for the shadows?.....what about color? f/stop increments in digital are different than film....crap there go all the nice even 1 stop,2 stop,1/2 stop adjustments.....Expansion and contraction in development?,,,,,there is no development anymore with digital....so now I am also working on precise Photoshop actions for this purpose....of course it depends on the camera you are using......
Histograms are nice.....still it gets way more involved to recreate that pre-visualised image in your head....
This is gonna take some time......Whew!

When it is turned on, it basicly saves 3 copies(in different sizes) of your image...making your file size bigger than it needs to be.
If you turn it off (in photoshop prefrences) it will reduce your saved file size. This might be what is happening to you?
No more nice little preview icons, but a good naming scheme will take care of that.
-my 2 cents

Look for something called a digital wallet. Im not sure just how expensive they are, but basicly they are a hard drive with a built in compact flash card slot...that way you can just download your days photos to the "wallet" , up to 20 gigs depending on the model, and get them on your computer later via USB....and now firewire....The problem with 1 gig microdrives are that they tend to generate a lot of heat which will impair the function of some cameras. Plus they contain moving parts and are quite vunerable to data loss by dropping...etc.

Not much wierd equipment use here.....aside from the pinhole camera I made using scrap mat board pieces lying around the darkroom. Taped together using black electrical tape. A piece of a coke can with a pinhole (duh) for the aperature. And instead of film, I used color RC paper.... This was while I was at school so I had use of an automated color print processor to develop my "negs" promptly. got some funky images though....I'll see if i can find them.... Oh, yeah...I also used the developed un exposed trailer of color film (orange) as a filter to get rid of the color cast of the exposed paper.....

I once shot a whole roll of images without ANY film in the camera......after the 40th or 50th exposure I realized something was wrong......

I just load a roll of film, turn on the motor drive and press the release while randomly swinging the camera around wildly zooming and focusing in and out. ....maybe i'll get a shot that I can fix in photoshop..... JOKE. I used to have a photo instructor that would take your "final" print at critique and start tearing it to shreds. When he was done, he would hand you back one little piece and say, "This is what you saw and were photographing....not all of this other stuff. Go back and re-shoot." It was amazing. That is also another reason I decided to learn how to use a view camera. There is no possible way to hurry a shot with one. If you do, not only is it bad but there is no real way to salvage it later. Plus the fact that a typical film holder only holds 2 exposures....so you are better off taking the time to try and get the best shot possible. It is not uncommon for me to sit (or stand) for the better part of an hour setting up for one stinkin exposure. (partially because I'm still learning the dang thing, and waiting for light)
