For the background Set ambient value to 1 and color to white, difuse value 0 connect the image to ambient color(edit to add) leave image connected to diffues so it shows in preview

OK, just checked on mine (P8) and if network down it gave error, if internet down (modem unplugged, I received no error.

As far as I know, all versions check the local network if available to see if another copy with the same serial is running.
Poser should not be 'Phoning home" unless you have Edit>preferences>Misc>Check for updates checked.

I think the problem is that poser becomes unresponsive while writeing to disk until it finishes.
How is your free space on your disk and have you defraged.
Saveing can involve hundreds of meg of disk writes.

Well, it is not supposed to make a difference, but it does. if you use the 'reneder firefly' script, you can get better results, because it has allows you to set both regulare cache and idl cache seperatly

If you are using IDL, make sure you set irradience cache down, not up. It will make a large difference in the IDL pre render step.

Ctrl-Shift-B is your friend for the library display in P7 and P8 at least. I float the library and once i have everything loaded remove it for screen space.

A weel to set up maybe, but a one minute animation at 30 fps is 1800 frames.
If you could render 1 per minute, it would take 30 hours of continous render time to complete.

My first thought would be too little memory. You do not mention if you are running 32 or 64 bit, but 2gig for Win7 is a little tight and it sounds like it is swapping.
I dont have Poser Pro, but when I upgraded to P8, Rendering speed increased by abut 200%
