Pascale, you are correct 8 bits for each color, RGB. Have fun deciding on the right camera--that can be even harder than raising the funds for it! ;]

Thank, I'll hold on to hope. Not sure how well the sensor will work with canal scum on it though after it dries. We shall see. ;`/

I think your JPEGs are still 8-bit per color channel -- 3 x 8 = 24. Don't stress tibet2004uk. I'm sure you'll get a camera with the RAW function eventually and if you are shooting for the web and not for print, chances are you won't see too much of a difference unless you really blow up your images. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the support. It is amazing how attached we can become to a thing. I feel like the aligator had bitten off my hand in a way. One thing is for sure, I will be using a hand or neck strap in the future, especially over water. Too bad there is no insurance for acts of stupidity (no, it wasn't insured). :/ This was the last shot I got off before he jumped. I was trying to crane around in front of him for a better angle. Doh! ;^] Well, at least the CF and xD card appear to have survived. --Kort

If you have that luxury and get that perfect compo, that is great, but I'm betting that the majority of photograhers all do a little cropping here and there, even if it is just a little off the top, or to remove and edge they didn't see in the viewfinder. I don't always, but will if I suddenly find a gem within an otherwise rough image. For me, I go by my gut as to what works. I can tell if there are elements I don't want in an image from the get go. But sometimes it is harder to make that slice. I have to rely on my ingrained design experient to tell me what works and what doesn't. The beauty of Photoshop is there is always an undo if you didn't work out.
