I must confess to being an Amapi and Wings head. I have not managed to upgrade to a new version of Amapi yet but I must say I do love Wings very much. Between both of them and Carrara very much is possible. The built in uvmapper makes easy work of occasionally complicated mapping tasks. For instance http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=663140&Start=1&Artist=ayodejiosokoya&ByArtist=Yes (shameless plug for my work :) When I do texture it setting up UVs would be quite quite demotivating cause it is the least fun part of the job. Also the different coloured parts of the model are shading domains that imported directly into Carrara from Wings which I find really handy. Once hotkeys are set up for each of the modelling can really fly by increasing productivity greatly. And I am loving that paper render series TOXE!It is some of my favourite work from Carrara that uses the much under utilised NPR. What can you do in the Carrra VM that is not possible in Wings?Where can I see more of your work?

It is definately a challenging subject to work on. Anothter one of my hopes is that through our interest in the SDK we will inspire the Carrara Dev team to complete the documentation and to really put some effort into empowering the plugin developer. I will try and give the SDK a go over the summer (am really busy with studies) and will contribute what I can to the Dev community.

I did not know a carrara SDK forum existed! I agree about the fragmentation of the Carrara community. It would be great to have a central place to meet and discuss all things Carrara. I shall definately sign up to the Yahoo SDK List. I think one thing that needs to be done is to at make the existing groups known so that users know where to go to get what they need. I think Eovia should consider making a site that is central to the community so that all of our efforts both technical and artistic are not dispersed across the internet. One of the reasons I posted this was that I am interested in learning about the SDK but it does seem a bit daunting. I am sure there are many others who feel exactly the same as I do. Mabey at some point when we know more we could start a simple group project utilising one of the existing forums so that we can all learn together. btw you did miss Carrarastudio.net ;).

Carrara is definately a great program. It does lack a few really basic things like being able to rotate a projected texture or HDRI map about an arbitary axis, but as a whole is great for the price. HDRI/GI are really fast. I am using an athlon 850MHz and I often leave GI on with anti-aliasing even when I am doing test renders. I do have some problems with area lights producing aritifacts on anything but the best light quality settings. I have had the odd crash now and then but nothing where I lost my work as I was still able to save and restart the program once the error had occured. There are a few bugs here and there but there is nothing that has really impared my enjoyment of the software. I am really looking forward to version 4 as the quality of this product seems to be increasing exponentially. It should be excellent. One concern for me is that they will never really beef up the modeller as it would start to compete with Amapi which if is true is a bit of a shame but we will just have to wait and see.
Thread: Weld vs. Link and UVMapper vs. Carrara 3's uvedit | Forum: Carrara
I use Ultimate Unwrap www.unwrap3d.com . It isreally good, although I think it could do with a few improvements. The free version (Lithunwrap) is quite good too http://files.seriouszone.com/download.php?fileid=198 . I opened the Carrara UV Mapper a few times and realised very quickly that it was not upto the task of mapping serious models. I rarely touch it. I think it is definately one of the things that needs a serious overhaul for version 4.

Your modelling skills are amazing! You have convinced me to get shader ops when I have the money!

Mabey you could make it display the scene comments as well as the scene thumbnail. The scene comments are not too hard because because opening a .car file in notepad shows them located a few lines down under "comm". The scene preview is another matter, hehehe... Good luck. Do you know if the SDK has been updated yet. I Downloaded it in January and there are some parts that were not finished.

Nice! Where are you going to store the information to appear in the tool tip? Is it pulled from the file?

Thanks guys for the help! I am even more confused :) but I think I ma more likely to figure this whole thing out. Gonna have to put more time into understanding this than I thought. It is more complicated then it looks. One thing that is great about using Carrara for print is the small render times. The fact that I am rendering at 4000px or more is not much of an issue since the renders are so fast. Thanks again.
