Wolf, industry standards are more than two words in any other world. They convey a compatibility, which so far, the words "weight mapping" are just that, two words and convey no standard.
Now it's in the lower end stuff, with Poser and Antonia proving it can work extremely well, a different method in DS4, which so far works with one figure.
In the years I was working, I found two things to be truth. If a tool is too expensive, it will be a failure in the market. The second, if a tool is cumbersome, it will not be used. It's as simple as that.
There will be those that go with the genesis, more power to them. There will be others that will go with other figures, more power to them too. Genesis can do a lot of things, I'm finding that out, but also finding a lot that it can't do well. I'm also aware that with me putting no money out for plugins for DS that I'm kinda hamstrung, but shortcomings are evident, the workarounds aren't so evident. They may be there, to those that are in the know and comfortable with DS. To me, I'm not in the know, and DS is, to me, clumsy and confusing. One shortcoming, with any program, is to get a newborn infant, I have to use the P4 infant.

Tend to agree with E Clark, why not have the EULA part of the sales rather than the install? Makes sense, no agreement, no sale. They already know what we bought, no big deal, a purchase requires agreement, or no sale. Far simpler and more efficient to my way of thinking.

All I can say is she bends beautifully, and that includes bends that would have any other figure tearing badly. Beautiful Job!

I do not want V5
Then why the rant?
No, I do not work for DAZ, I hardly think they'd have use for a toolmaker, and probably couldn't put up with the way I learned to work. Hurrying to meet a date is the fastest way to ensure you will do it twice, only you don't get paid for the second time.
I really don't care if V5 ever works in Poser, and while I'm trying to learn DS, I have no intention of displacing Poser for DS. Nor have I any intention of dumping the money for V5 now or in the future.
Antonia is nice, but just because she's available, that won't eliminate others liking the V series as much or more. Some want V5, some don't care. I'll use the Poser figures if they suit what I want, or the DAZ if they fit better, but really don't have any real preference. My biggest problem with DAZ is documentation, and it looks like they won't have any solution soon. No big deal, it's not locking my computer up or saying I can't use anything else. I'm as guilty as anyone of dumping vitriol on DAZ, but I also know that accomplishes nothing, nor does dumping on those that want V5 for Poser do anything. If the vendors decide to support Antonia, they will. If they choose to support V5, they will. Nothing will change that.

Tavia3D:
this begs an answer, and I'm not sure I can adequately answer it.
First, the industry is now at a point where it can either work together to come up with reasonable agreements, or it can split into two camps. DAZ could go one way and Poser another. Which I don't really see happening.
No, Genesis or V5 is not a poser product as yet. The day may come. I'm not completely enthralled with what I've found in Genesis, but I'm also fumbling trying to learn DS at the same time. I don't see myself giving up poser for DS at this time as I'm too fond of a few of Poser features and so far find DS to be clumsy to me.
But I'm also learning BLender as something with more capability than Wings, and playing with Hexagon at the same time. I see no problem with this, if one proves to be more trouble than it's worth to get into my head, just don't do it.
Amateur vs pro or hobbyist vs pro, broad brush you paint with. There are probably quite a few here that are free lance artists, making a living with things the "big boys" don't want to mess with, at the same time providing service for some that can't afford the "big boys".
Antonia is nice, and I see nothing wrong with her figure. Unless of course you're looking for something like Jessica, more fantasy than realistic.
I don't like the installers either, but I also use very few of them.
Cloud computing is probably beyond my lifetime to become a viable entity, so I'm not going to worry about it. If it happens before then, oh well. I don't have to buy into it.

Quote - I have 2 computers and a laptop, actually, all of which have net access... and I have a metric ton of stuff to potentially lose (and stuff even that cannot be replaced)
But the answer isn't keeping my machine offline - its in doing frequent backups. I have an external drive, and a server with unlimited space. Ive had my runtime going since Poser 4. And with that setup? My old machine ran 3 yrs without one single virus.... my new rig.... no viruses, either.
I have three desktops and one laptop, but this one, which is only a 2.6ghz P4 is the only one on line. The other two, everything that I take to them has already been scanned by Nortons here before it gets moved. But this one is now going on six years, and while I had other people using my connection, (teenagers with all their "social networking") I had that thing called Antivirus soft. That one was a real roach, until you coughed up the money for an inferior and slow AV, it wouldn't let you do anything. They got thirty emails from me within fifteen minutes, none of which I would dare repeat here. Facebook, myspace, any of those are now blocked by my firewall.

Quote - > Quote - Personally, I've bought hundreds of things from Rendo, Daz, RDNA and other 3D sites and never had a Bad Thing happen. Other than the item was not as nice as it seemed on the product page, that is!
Yeah, same here... Ive bought from all the stores, and tons and tons of stuff. Never once got a virus. But if I did... I wouldnt wrap a condom over my computer lol One needs to be proactive about them and learn how to deal with them, not wrap their entire cyber world in a protective bubble. Where's the fun in that?
As one of those that years ago had one of the older, destructive worms, believe me, it's not worth it. Hundreds of hours spent taking hundreds of photos through a microscope lost, the worm looked for .jpg and played games in the headers. Nasty little program, hope the guy that wrote it got the same thing in his compiler, and anything else in that machine. I have no idea where it came from either. Since then, Nortons is in effect and this box is scanned at least once a day. The KAK worm may have been irritating, but that was about all. At least it didn't let you do anything, but if you could still get to your AV, you could get rid of it easy enough before it had a chance to infect anything else.

Yop. No more burns, and right before I decided to buy the complete dream home, having a burn for that would have been nice, it's a lot of files to download even with DSL. Does a pretty good job of taking care of two CD's. Then burn to disk and take them to the work machine, or as in my case, "play" machine.
Figured Randall would be back, but he's got a day job too, so probably doesn't have as much time to be on line as those of us that don't work. Might have figured out when something works right, nobody says nothing. When it doesn't, here come the restless natives. With warpaint and tomahawks ready.

I'm pretty twisted that DAZ hasn't kept up with the documentation, that's inexcusable. But having had to write mantenance and operating manuals for machines I've builit, I can also appreciate there are difficulties in finding someone that can make sense out of it.
I also do not come from the software world, I'm a retired toolmaker. In that world, there are two choices, it's right, or its refunded. Here is where I disagree with the way software is released, on schedule, and it doesn't matter if it works. If each copy of the release software that didn't work was the same as having to pay return shipping on a four thousand pound piece of equipment, they might have second thoughts on releasing it before it was ready. Then again, software is not my world.
I think I've been as hard on Randall as anyone, but carrying things from the obvious to the rediculous to the obvious next step, time to back off and let it rest. There is a point where it goes from complaint to abuse, and it's gone far beyond that.

Randall has answered a lot of questions, probably to the best of his ability, or as much as he is allowed to say. If SM has something in the works, and someone else leaks it, then there could be legal hell to pay. Let's leave Randall alone on what SM might be doing. Two diffrent companies, ya know.
Woman with four kids denies having sex statement, anything can be twisted or any number of things can be brought up, but what the hell for other than being smart about it. What Randall meant was very clear, obviously there is some connection with the net, or some people are operating with extremely limited resources, like the included content or nothing else. And with no connection, how did anyone post here? Hmmm?
IT should be obvious that the whole of 3d is changing, but trying to do it and not just drop the old way and "sorry, here's where you start over" isn't going to be easy. It means software that will have to be able to run both systems easily and efficiently until the demand for the old is gone. If anyone wants to get their fingers in that programming mess, be my guest, I wouldn't.
My main question was on documentation, and he answered that, more or less stating everything that they'd been shown was a bunch of crap, not worth publishing. Okay, so it seems I don't have to look for a manual next week, maybe not next year, but at least they're making an effort. GOOD tech writers aren't that common, and not cheap, but sometimes the only answer is to wait. I use poser, Wings, a few others at times, so it's not a factor to me, really. One figure or family of figures I can't use are more than made up for by the number I can.
Let's lose the attitudes. I did.

As one that will still slip Dork and Posey in as background figures, I don't think any investment in the older "non Genesis" figures is lost, they haven't been deleted from our computers magically and won't be. If DAZ decides to abandon the older figures completely, concentrating everything on the Genesis, Well, Antonia WM should show them what the end result will be. It's been said Nature abhorrs a vacuum, and one is beginning to appear. DAZ may be the "number one" when it comes to figures, but liike anything else, you're number one only until someone comes along and takes that from you. One only has to look at Blender and how far it's progressed to see this.

Quote - Isn't that why it is free or why the mil 4 figures were free for so long, why genesis is free with studio 4?
Genesis free with Studio is about the same as the Gen 4 figures being offered for free. At the time I got the Gen 4 figures, they weren't free, but even then, if you wanted to do anything with them, you had to buy the morph paks and textures unless you could settle for the base figure. Studio may have been an attempt, how successful I don't know, to increase the market for their figures, and of course, the associated paks to go with it. Dork and Posey, Judy and Don, Penny and Will were all free with Poser 5, probably because it offered something to get started with. They weren't bad, but the DAZ figures were better, even if at higher cost. My gut feeling, DS is secondary to the figures, the figures are secondary to the clothing etc. If you want to use one of them, you have to have the other and on down the line.
A marketing strategy, maybe successful, I have no idea what it did. But buying hair with no figure to put it on doesn't make sense, nor does buying clothing with no figure, and each of them is a sale. Poser was then "expensive", I had to think on it a long time before I decided to jump in. Poser had the benefit of being at least halfway easy to use, compared to anything else available, and was far cheaper. So, DS, free, a lot of people that couldn't afford or justify the price of Poser became customers for figures, clothing, props, that wouldn't otherwise have been customers.

Hmm. DS4 installed, give it a run, okay. Didn't crash right away. But, while realizing that machine is only 1.6ghz and only has 4 gb memory, S L O W ! Steady by jerks.
Comparing with P7 which I also have on the same machine, DS4 seems to have so far as it's main attribute, waiting for it. P7 also does not operate smoothly as in my good one, but I'd say it's roughly four to six times faster. (P7vs DS4)
However, as the interface has yet again changed from the first release, not so far that I couldn't find things, working with the default content is probably all I'll be doing with it for some time to come, and that may never change. I may someday figure out how to get it to search for other content, but that's not a priority yet. This is the free version, so none of the more advanced features now, maybe never, I don't know. I give it a play for about a week, but some documentation might be helpful. Hint, Randall!
Didn't find where to turn on IK, maybe it's not included? Some option to get rid of the kiddy symbols and have pull down menus instead might be nice, not to mention a hell of a lot faster than "click this, no, not that one, click this, Oh. That's what that does." Click on them all and eventually you might find the one you're looking for. Which is why I hate kiddy symbols. I still remember how to read words.
Anyhow, I give it a weeks play, but so far, I've seen nothing that would cause me to spend money on additional functions and/or other content packages. Oh, yeah. The shortcut to the DAZ store, when the computer isn't on line is kinda wasted. It go bye-bye. But I'm gonna treat it like someone that has a limited connection and has to figure out everything themselves, without help. I'll keep you updated. Hopefully it won't be another monitor that goes black because my fist went through it. That's happened before a couple of times.

Hmm. Now I may have to do something, like installing DS4 in a computer, I have it downloaded and on a CD, but after the first release which has long expired, I haven't played with it. But as I have another box that has basically two word processors in it and a 1tb drive, I think I can risk that one. (There's cheap, and then there's eMachines.) It is, however, a 64 bit with W7, so maybe it might run it.
For Randall to chew on for a little, if the only documentation for DS4 is on line, that might kinda guarantee failure as I only have one box on line. The rest of them are pretty well isolated from most sources of malware. Running from room to room to try to look at any doc that might be available then running back to the computer somehow seems not to make sense. And I don't think I'm the only one that keeps the good machine away from the net.

No uppity attitude coming or meant. What I meant was more if someone wants to know "How do I export abc from "def" into poser", it will probably be interpreted as a poser question when it's not. "How do I import "def" from "abc" into poser is a poser question. The commons would probably be a better choice, with a higher chance of someone seeing it that knows the answer to the first, the poser forum, better for the second. By segregate, I didn't mean deliberately, but "de facto", the one word Poser being the only guide.
As far as Randall, I think he might have a little thicker skin by now, but possibly something called a "Day Job" might get in the way at times.
