Another method is to work on individual objects, add them to your object menu then bring them in for the final scene, this way you break down the objects into parts and stick them together like a kit at the end. It's also useful to have if you want to use these again in future projects.

Alot of idea for you here to try. All I can suggest is scale, think of how each objects size works in relation to the other. There are a multitude of tutorials out there. A good source which helped me is www.3dlinks.com. The tutorials there may not be relevant to this picture, but will help you learn a lot of bryce skills. As woodhurst mentioned just try messing about with the haze option in sky lab, and try different skies. Also if you have a paint program, try adding after effects such as some surf bouncing of the rocks to brak them up. The water mat applied to a terrain also works well for waves, once again there should be a tutorial for it. Great first image, look forward to more!

I know this isn't strictly to do with volumetrics, and render settings, but I read somewhere on the web regarding textures and render times, that when you choose a material, ie: planes/terrains, the further down the texture appears on the chart, the longer the render times. Some guy had recorded each materials render time and in most cases the theory had proved correct. But don't pull your hair out it's just one of the problems we all face, you can cut corners with postwork, but depends on whether your a purist or not.
