Thread: HELP VICTORIAN ROOM TO BIG 30 MEG HOW MAKE SMALLER | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well there are a couple of ways to go about this. But I'd first have to know what program you're using to create this. Poser can be very forgiving when it welds the mesh(s), that is to say, if you create the objects with less detail (less polygons) it will do a fairly good job at smoothing out the rough edges. But the first rule of thumb of any object is to optimize, optimize, optimize. High end programs like LightWave have plugins that will "Decimate/Optimize" an object/mesh. There are also Low end programs like Carrara that have a "Decimate" built in (though I have had many problems with that in the past-- it seems not to do well with an object that has a great number of polygons). There are also some other stand alone programs that will do this too. Though they are expensive and I haven't been able to afford them to test them. And I haven't found one that I CAN afford (So if anyone else knows of one, now's the time to speak up). This is all if you don't want to start from scratch. That would be the next suggestion. Redo the props/objects and make sure you use the MINIMAL amount of polygons. I can tell just by looking at the image above, that the Chandelier could lose a ton of polygons and still look great. It seems that (as you stated) it IS a polygon hog and needs a bit of a wieght loss program ;-) I hope this at least sheds some light on your dilemma. James
Thread: Texturing a many part OBj - Carrara Studio Export | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have to stress what JeffH said. Carrara is great at exporting a clean .obj file. But certian things have to be done prior to exporting. And the main one is to change all, I mean ALL the materials to what you want to end up as separate groups. You can always change the names and tweak more in UVMapper and Poser. I.e. If you had a figure, you would select the head and create a NEW material for it called "Head" , select the neck and create a NEW texture for it called "Neck" (Of course if you're creating a standard figure, it's best to name figure parts (materials too I.e. Call the head material "head", call the material of the foot "foot") to the corresponding "Poser" names (You can find this in the manual)). The "skin" material like in the Poser figures which cover several body parts can be done in Poser, don't try to do them in Carrara. When you assign materials to the parts in Carrara you also create the groups. So if you have the foot and the head the same material, in Poser it will be grouped. Secondly, depending what kind of object you have in Carrara you want to set it's properties in the mesh modeler. This will increase or decrease the number of polygons and the detail quality when exporting. Hope this helps and isn't too confusing. James
Thread: Vicky in the wild :) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well. I'm really good with faces, and I'm 99.999% sure that that is inded Vicky's face to the left. And yes too bad Poser or Bryce don't take full advantage of these cards. James
Thread: One part poet, one part, well, hmm...... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I'm just assuming (One should never assume --ass out of you and me as the statment goes-- ass - U - Me) But I do it anyway ;-) A lot of object/props that are out there and a few that I have done also have what I'm thinking the terminology is that they have reverse normals. While they look like they have holes or look like they have missing parts... the parts/holes are really there but not seen in OpenGl or other preview modes. But when rendered they show up and render correctly and as expected. This happens when a part of an object has no depth. It has an <---x ,a y---> but no / z dimention. I should stop now, I'm even confusing myself. But I'm sure someone else could explain this better. I do understand what's going on , but right now I can't put it into words. There is a program out here in the free stuff I believe for the PC that fixes this, so you can see the missing segments/areas. But then again I could be totaly wrong and this may be another problem. See assuming again. James
Thread: Sadam stole my friend's work!! | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It does sound like a losing battle. And of course I wish it just wasn't so. Sometimes life is just incredibly unfair. Your work is astounding and I can see why someone would want it. So I hope at least that you get some recognition out of all of this and can get the word out that this is indeed yours. Your best bet at this point is word of mouth and don't give up at least telling people. Good luck. James
Thread: Huge geometry files :: a complaint about Ray Dream Studio | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The "Upgrade" to Ray Dream is Carrara. It does a nice job of getting the right amount of detail (verticies and polygons) without a bunch of extras. It does allow you to set the detail level and you can actually go in ant do a point by point edit if you need to, along with decimating and increasing poly counts on spicific areas as well as the whole. But the program is not as user friendly and as nice IMHO as Infini-D (The first before Ray Dream). And I do a lot of my props for Poser in Infini-D and have never had this problem. The "cap" of my cylindars only have one center vertici. James
Thread: Got Floor? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Ok People, let's start a NEW thread for this. Something kind like "Northern CA (Bay Area) Poser get together". And let's truly work out the details. Since I'm in the process of moving, I'll most likely not be available til at least the end of the month. So I'm thinking that Some time in September might work and will give us all plenty of time to make arrangments. This way too if anyone from outside the area who would like to drop by can also make plans to visit. I really have been dying to meet in person several of the members here (you too amp3 ;-)). Let's make this work and not let it fall by the wayside like so many plans do. James PS: A NEW thread will also alert those who haven't become part of this thread, since the Title "Got Floor" means nothing to this effect.

Gee all these Californians! Who would of thunk it? ;-) I have been in San Francisco since 1980, and I just got an apartment in Alameda last thursday. I'll be moving in a week. I hate moving, I just hope I don't have any down time on my computers. One of these days we should all meet somewhere where we can all get to and swap Poser horror stories ;-) I've have always been hoping for some form of a Poser gathering in the Bay Area. I'd like to see if we could get some people from DAZ (I've gotten to know them very well but they're in Utah) and Curious Lab over here as well. James
Thread: Bryce 5 slower renders?. | Forum: Bryce
It's the same on the MAC. I have gone through rigourous testing here. B5 is slower no matter what. Yes Bryce has always been a bit sluggish. And always deathly slow when any volumetrics are involved. But even at the lowest settings in B5 it is slower than B4. Sigh. I also won't give up on it, but it would be nice if the engine got an overhaul. Now with soft shadows and all the NEW options available I just can't wait the 12 plus hours it now takes to render some simple scenes at medium settings. So surfice it to say, I will always be using somewhat low settings unless it's something professional that has to be done. So a hint is: render at lowest settings until you're pleased with that result and THEN crank up the settings and go on vacation, and when you come back it will be done, barring a power failure. ;-) James
Thread: TREES :-( | Forum: Bryce
I'm haveing tons of problems with the tree designer. If I touch the right parameter at the wrong time I get a hang up and finally an out of memory message. I have plenty of memory so this shouldn't happen. I'm also getting strange results in the branch thickness. And I was hoping that selecting .. well let's say for example ...a "fir" tress shape and corresponding "leaf" setting that it would change all the parameters and then you could go on from there. But this is not the case. You still have to struggle with parameter settings to get the tree to look anything like the tree you hoped the preset was going to give you. I think the Tree designer is a great boon to the program, but I'm not so sure that they thought it all out in this release. Again I have to say that I'm glad they put this in, but I think it will take some time before I get the hang of it. James
Thread: Network Rendering? | Forum: Bryce
Great bit of info TomD. Thanks. Though I havn't been able to get my Mac and PC to work yet. I'll keep trying though since I know this will help me a lot since I want to take advantage of the higest settings in Bryce 5. And they really SLOW things down! I have PCMACLAN running to have the two talk together normally and that works fine for an AppleTalk connection, but B5 doesn't seem to recognize this connection. Hmmm. But I'n starting a new topic. I'll stop now. ;-) I hope we at least answered MikeJ's question. James
Thread: The Eyes Have It... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hmmm. I have to say that if you pull apart Michael's and Victoria's eyes you'll see that they are not just spheres. They are very dimentional, with 4 separate parts. the eyewhites actually have a ridge detail around the iris. They really have a lot of depth which shine in a true ray trace program. Poser sometimes just doesn't show this well. This is by no means a slam at any attempt you're doing here. These eyes look fine, though I agree, a little small. James
Thread: Wacom Tablets: Need advice/opinions | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
The intuos mouse also does not come with a scroll wheel on the mouse. Since I use the mouse that came with the Graphire and a scroll wheel extensivly this to me is a small minus for going larger. And to touch on the price structure also. $429.00 for the 9x12 is a bit pricy, and even the refurb special is still $299.00 and pricy for a hobbiest. As I mentioned before, go find one and see what it's like and then decide if you can afford the higher priced Intuos or if you'll be happy with the much more affordable 4x5 Graphire. James
