I think that Wings is definitely the best free modelling app, however for Poser it has a major limitation....being a "wings" modeller (whatever that means) results in all models being "closed", which makes it useless for modelling dynamic clothing (which is open). It's fine for all other stuff.

I have written a python app that iterates thru the materials in the material room and outputs to a pz2 file, which can then be applied back to your figures, which kind of achieves the outcome you are looking for. The most recent couple of images in my gallery show the output (but not the python script :-)

I've been playing around with dynamic hair, and got totally frustrated that the hair was going thru V3's nose.....until I realised that you need to not only check the Do Collision's box, but also the Collision Detection for the head, neck etc - as kirwyn said above. Works ok now!
