lotsa updates to the review... whew I got my dedicated Bryce drive back (this is a good thing!) I had to create a folder on the drive and install bryce into the folder, it wouldnt work just installed to the drive, but in the folder..it worked fine. Once I got the drive back, I rerendered the test files for time. I got the exact same times as I had with 4.0.1! So there is NO appreciable difference between 4.0.1 and 4.1 in render times. What this does imply tho is that I have been getting a 10% faster render time than the standard bryce user by having Bryce on its own drive! Something most definately worth investigating further! :) If any of you are game to try that, please lemme know! This could be a big breakthru for decreasing render times in Bryce. also, several people have contacted me and said they do still have their advanced display modes. I tried every little trick I can think of to get them back, but they just wont come back in 4.1. They worked fine today in 4.0.1 before I did the reinstall of 4.1. hi guys/gals the patch has a different gamma (or possibly contrast) setting for the interface. You lose the advanced display modes. You lose about 10% render time, and the mac problem described at the top is either an OS invalidity problem or the code is incorrect. Meaning it doesnt work on versions below 8.5 even tho its says it will work on mac 7.5 and up. love the new mapping modes! The images are slightly crisper in tone. Stablility is the same as the earlier version...Ive seen some of the light w/ gradient renders..they rock! Didnt really see any difference in the starmodes. all in all, its ok, but the losses are probably not worth the upgrade for most...I did encounter several problems with the upgrade which I also found the workaround to. I think that if you download it and take it apart, you can learn how to do some modeling. nah...heres the answer...(and the problem) the "object not found" error is an error relating to radial lights in groups in Bryce. This error was not corrected until the 4.1 version...unfortunately, new buyers are SOL in this...but meta buyers (those with 4) can upgrade to 4.1 and kiss this sucker goodbye. what causes it is editing a light that is within a group without ungrouping the light...its really easy to reproduce in 3.0 (or 3.1) or 4.0 but the differences vary in 3.0 if you create 1 radial light and one cube..group them then edit the light without ungrouping it then save the file..it will not reopen and you get this error in 4.0 if you create 2 radial lights and one cube..group them and edit the lights (again without ungrouping them) and save the file, it will not reopen got a whole section about this error in the bugs section of my site...and its a BAD bug...ive lost many files to it...and spending hours on a file just to lose it is not a good thing! anyhow..check this out! you can learn the workaround, more about the cause, and lots of other bryce bugs http://www.brycetech.com/bugs.html good luck BT

signing my name above was simply my way of saying this is the creator of Brycetech and I do not in any way/shape/form or fashion support this kind of "behind the scenes" stuff. I do not disagree with curious wanting their logo, upgrades, whatever in the poser program. Heck they own it! If Id have paid big bucks for a program, Id want some return fast too. BUT not at the expense of the loyal users of the program. Ive said it before, poser is probably the #1 used program in association with Bryce. In my experience, anyone that uses poser has a "love/hate" relationship with it...but people still buy it and make very intriguing images with it. I would never say that there is no need for some kind of guard, my concern is this wasnt announced. ever heard the saying: once burned, twice shy ? so I guess this all spawns from a similar experience to Jack's where I have been attacked by people getting into open ports and scanning my stuff. One time a person called me by name and they had no idea what it was!...they just read it from my computer. it was mentioned above very eloquently... a few short paragraphs could have averted this whole deal. kupa did email me personally about this and I find that very nice indeed...at least an attempt to do some damage control from the president of a company does show a little caring about the customer. Ive never dealt with any other company that thought they had to check my passwords and Im not starting now. I have bought every version of poser (even tho I dont use it that often) since it came out, and find it very dis-heartening that the first new touch would cause my firewall to freak out. so still no p4.0.3 or p5+ for me... but Im glad others like the explanation... still see no real accomplishment by putting such a check on any system..its easy to stop and I just dont get why it would be done when such things (meaning any kind of broadcast) in the past have been recieved so negatively in the past. This is probably the #1 program used with Bryce on the whole as a community...tis sad indeed... well...nuff from me... Im sure Ive made it clear that this is not acceptable to me in any form... just a quick question for all of you did you know that much of the software you use now has a similar "use check" installed? CuteFTP, Fireworks, Flash, (just to name a few)...The downloaded versions of those do have something similar installed... as for CL installing a "password checker" and it "not sending info across the net"...just exactly how will a password checker work if it doesnt send info somewhere? Its not very logical for anyone to say it does not send info...at the very least it would have to send the user IP (or computer name...which could include the windows pw) and the Poser password and the time (from your computer)..at the most (without being really harmful) it could send your name, what programs you have installed, and perhaps some other habits. I personally will NOT upgrade to this 4.03 nor will I buy the next version of Poser. I dont care what excuse they offer (read offer as "make up")...but thats just my opinion. Its my computer and if I dont want people to know whats on it..then its my choice! not some program or company! companies think its ok and justified to send out info from your computer...I pay my internet connection..NOT THEM! I bought this computer...NOT THEM! and I can choose to support a company if they try to do such to me...NOT THEM!..and I choose not to. ok..so that was more than .02...we'll call that .10 ;) sorry to hear this all tho, Im not an avid poser user, but I have bought every version since it first came out...I guess I'll miss 5.0. I certainly hope that Corel doesnt try such with its update thats due out soon for Bryce... sigh BT
