thats a nice tutorial... I like the way you presented it... :) I dont own carrara, but rds has every control you mentioned (just that it doesn look like a poser interface like carrara does) thanx for the tutorial BT

nah bryce has a limit to reflections, some say 6 some say 12 (depends on how you look at it)
Thread: spot light question | Forum: Bryce
cant count should read: at 1-1000 bu the objects would be 100% lit, at 1001-2000 bu the objects would be 80% lit, at 2001-3000 the object would be 60% lit...etc... oops :) BT

ruff rules of thumb that are coming in a new tute on lighting in Bryce that I've been working on for about 6 months now. These assume clear/hazeless/fogless settings: Squared light ranges: power 25---------250 BU power 50---------300 BU power 75---------350 BU power100---------400 BU power125---------450 BU power150---------500 BU power275---------550 BU power300---------600 BU what does this mean? well for squared Bryce simulates the real world lighting effect of say lightbulbs. For every said distance away from the source, the power drops by a square. Bryce does not do it exactly, in fact..its rather cheezy how it works. It acually renders ranges of the light at the same intensity (most have 5-10 falloff zones..for this example Im gonna use 5 for all) So if you look at the above...if your light is at 50 (it has a range of approx 300 BU), then objects between 1-60 bu from the light will be 100% lit, if its at 61-120 bu it will be 50% lit, if its at 121-180 bu it will be 25% lit and so on... (like I said, bryce doesnt do the as the real world would, but its better than linear) Linear light ranges: multiply the power setting by 100 this will give approx BU. this is supposedly a linear falloff of lighting...it again uses ranges however. for linear light of power 50 (it has an approx range of 5000) at 1-500 bu the objects would be 100% lit, at 501-1000 bu the objects would be 80% lit, at 1001-1500 the object would be 60% lit...etc... again this is just an example of how it is handled. The actual interpretation is much more involved and has more falloff ranges, is atmosphere dependant and material dependant, but the above should help a little in understanding what the numbers do... the tute wont be done for quite some time yet (some people havent finished portions of it, and others "jumped ship"..glances a clay..which took a little of the punch out of it) hope that all made sense and helped at least a little.. poo... what video card are you using? Bryce does not like ATI cards (for one) and several others cause really wierd crap like you are mentioning here... the only partial fix that I have found is to download the latest updates to the drivers for your video card AND download the latest dll patches from www.microsoft.com for the particular OS you are using (I assume you use either win95 or win98) also look next to the clock..count the number of things you see there...if you can, turn off as many as you can (right click and exit or disable)..things like norton repeated insist on grabbing the processor and if Bryce has it, it isnt pretty (Bryce doesnt play well with its friends). you can also do other things to make ram come back...for instance, reduce the resolution of your monitor or even cut it down to 256 display mode (bryce will still render the 36million color image) then simply reset everything back to the way you like it when the image finishes. I have scenes that require me to do this or they would never finish...images that take 6 or 7 days to render...and these eat ram, processor, and cause windows to lose track of dll's necessary for display and even mouse movement. good luck oh, and I never "render to disk" ;) BT

thanx all for the comments and suggestions I will have a better "loading" feature when this is all done, but was more interested in the actual flash when I was doing this. keep flashing BT
Thread: HOT NEWS-All Metacreations Patches, Upgrades & Goodies still available... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Until they tell me Im not doing this legally I have the B3 and B4 patches at Brycetech in the "Brycetech Downloads" for windows too. Meta does not have to support previous releases...it can shut this server down today if it wants...I think the ftp server is up ONLY because they forgot it is. I suggest that everyone that owns b3 or b4 grab the updates and file them away somewhere... Bryce 4.1 by corel is due out and since its the first "patch" by corel..it may be full of holes...youd want to be able to fix the fix ;) BT
Thread: a 20 foot screw and a 30 inch tree? | Forum: Bryce
lol I use 1 BU = 1/4 inch on almost all interior scenes and 1 BU = 1 inch on most exterior scenes have used 1 BU = 1 foot on space scenes (but that was when I was doing Babylon5 images) the station is 5 miles long so I had to. but..for those that dont know..if you make the scene units smaller (like I do for interior scenes) Bryce will use the textures farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr more realistically and you will be more impressed with your renders. See, that gives the rendering engine the chance to use what it has..and you can see it :) BT

the reason no one has replied here is that this image is 1/2 meg in size... almost no one will wait to view it... as for getting people to help make images...there are hundreds of "requests" like this on the web and those that can do it don't look at it as an "opportunity". Most dont get paid and most never go the entire distance. To date, I only know of 3 long term Bryce endeavors that were actually completed. Two were short movies and one was the game "Driven" at my site. you might want to look at: http://www.brycetech.com/tutor/windows/jpeg_compression.html regarding proper compression for web pages. good luck on your project BT

Thread: Reflection Maps | Forum: Bryce
reflection maps are interesting features. for instance, if properly applied you can make objects appear as if they are reflected in a surface (even tho the object is nowhere in the actual scene file) or you can do some really kewl decorative effects like decorative mirrors...for instance a non -reflective decorative surface surrounded by a reflective mirror surface (many real world mirrors have this) not much info is available (that Ive seen) on the practical application of reflection maps (I may need to fix that ;)) good luck BT
