Thread: RTEJava, cross platform, alternatives? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hey!
RTEJava is still available publicly - I copied the files (but not the web pages) to another host a few months ago, before geocities shut down its services. Just search in freestuff and you'll find it!
However, I stopped supporting RTEJava several years ago and have no plans to update it. I built the first version of RTEJava way back in December 2003 because, at that time, there was no Mac version of the better-known original RTE utility.

Thread: Miki2 Elegant Gown? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for your replies. I posted this question in the CP forums as well, and got my answer: the "elegant gown" is apparently the same as the "Elegant Dress for Miki 2.0".

Just change "Top 200 Most Wanted Downloads" to "Poser Historical Archive", and all will be well :)

Quote - The sad thing is that Java is perfect for a utility like this.
Noel, I couldn't agree more, and not just because I used Java ;)
For a utility that most users will run once in a blue moon, Java is a good choice: somewhat slower execution times traded for very rapid cross-platform development time. An amateur like me was able to build a functional clone of another utility in a matter of weeks (would have been "days" if not for failing to establish the good working relationship with the other guy, and Xmas 2003 travels).

Quote - As you may have picked up, there's no love lost between the author of the original RTEncoder, and the Java lookalike...
EnglishBob, thanks for giving me a much needed laugh!
I wrote RTEJava because I wanted a utility like the original that would run on my old Mac G3 (Mac OS 8.6) and on my future Mac OS XÂ box (which turned out to be a Win XP laptop!).
I tried to establish a good working relationship with the author of the original, and intended to heap much praise upon both him and his app; unfortunately, he chose to view my version as a competitor, at which point the "no love lost " relationship was born.
Thread: Hesitating to buy model if there is a RTEncoder involved? (mini poll) | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I'm replying to this old thread for the sake of those who may search the forum in the future.
I'm the author of the free RTEJava utility. RTEJava works on both Windows (95 and later) and Mac OS (8.1 and later, including Mac OS X).
I built RTEJava for myself to use on my Mac. RTEJava is not perfect, however RTEJava works!!!
RTEJava is a Java application, so it may work in some ways that are unexpected if you have used only native Windows or Mac OS applications in the past.
If RTEJava won't launch at all:
If you encounter a problem when choosing the key file while decoding a rte file: - The name of the key file appears in the FileChooser dialog as a HINT only: You must navigate to the folder that contains the key file you want to use and click on it to actually choose the key file.
If you encounter any other problems while RTEJava is running: - Click the About button to get information about your OS and Java version, along with the RTEJava bug report e-mail address.
Don't hesitate to use the RTEJava bug report e-mail address: I can't improve RTEJava if I don't know what problems folks are having!

Miss Nancy,
I'm glad to hear the RTEJava.jar launches with a double-click.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you with arbaro.jar.
Feel free to rename the "RTEJava 0.5b" folder to eliminate the space, as that shouldn't cause any problems.

Miss Nancy,
I'm not familiar with arbaro.jar, but it is probably an application (and not an applet), which is why Applet Launcher won't run it.
Java applets are restricted for "security" reasons. For example, an applet is not allowed to read or write files on your hard disk (otherwise someone could steal or corrupt info that's on your hard disk through a web page by using an applet). On the other hand, a Java application is just like any other application, except that the programmer used Java (instead of C++ or some other language).
Did RTEJava run when double-clicked? I don't have access to a Mac OS X machine at the moment, but last night I did have a chance to briefly test RTEJava.jar on a Mac running Jaguar. On that Mac, double-clicking RTEJava.jar lauched the application.
By the way. if you type the command "java -version" in Terminal, what version number of Java is reported on your Mac?

fastLee,The application (for Mac) that you seek does not exist at this time.
There is a cross-platform Java application that essentially does the same thing available at the link above.
BTW, I deleted post 4 to respect the wishes expressed in post 5.

Russell,
I had never considered my utility as a "competitor", but more as a "port": even though it's not based on your source code, the encoding algorithm and file format are exactly as described in the "Read Me" file for version 1.00 of your utility.
I will respect your wishes and refer to my utility as "RTEJava" from now on. I will not mention your name in connection with my utility.
