RTEncoder is available in an (unofficial) Java version which will work on either platform. The official download from http://www.rtencoder.com/ is Windows only.As you may have picked up, there's no love lost between the author of the original RTEncoder, and the Java lookalike. There were some tales going around that the two weren't 100% compatible; although I don't know how true they are, or whether they've been fixed, that has probably tended to sway most people (i.e. Windows users) to the official version. On the other hand, as far as I know Mac users have no other choice when faced with an RTE encoded file, so I suppose you could say that it was widely used among Maccers. ;)

EnglishBob, thanks for giving me a much needed laugh!
I wrote RTEJava because I wanted a utility like the original that would run on my old Mac G3 (Mac OS 8.6) and on my future Mac OS X box (which turned out to be a Win XP laptop!).
I tried to establish a good working relationship with the author of the original, and intended to heap much praise upon both him and his app; unfortunately, he chose to view my version as a competitor, at which point the "no love lost " relationship was born.

Noel, I couldn't agree more, and not just because I used Java ;)
For a utility that most users will run once in a blue moon, Java is a good choice: somewhat slower execution times traded for very rapid cross-platform development time. An amateur like me was able to build a functional clone of another utility in a matter of weeks (would have been "days" if not for failing to establish the good working relationship with the other guy, and Xmas 2003 travels).

Are there any encoder/decoder that works with Mac and Win both?
Any advice appreciated.
