Thread: how many here make their living from digital art? | Forum: Bryce
I make a small suplimental income from my digital art. Some animation, some Poser/DAZ3D products that I sell, some web design, some Photoshop retouching for photographers. Mainly I'm a cameraman, but it's always good to have a sideline to get you through the slow times.

Aha! I knew it had to be something simple like that. I'll relay the message to daz3d tech support and have them fix it. Thanks for taking the time to figure that out, and thanks again for buying my products. I'm glad you like them and that they're saving you lots of time that is better spent elsewhere.

Hmm, that's odd. Sorry you're having problems. Sometimes the fastest way to get tech support from Daz3d is to call their 800 number. If there's a fix needed I'm sure they'll let me know asap. I'm on a Mac so I don't use .rsr's, but I'll write them an email too and maybe that will get things moving faster. Thanks for letting me know.

Terra-man, I'm not sure what you mean by "real content", or why you would worry about me publishing a page without it. I'm also not sure what you mean by "using the renders correctly"? Could you clarify? Galactic Empires is a game currently under construction, this site is basically to promote it and help find investors. Content is on the way..and as I said, the site is still under construction. There will be a playable game there by the end of the year. Even if I split the page into a dozen images, it's still the same amount of data. You might get the illusion of it loading faster, but it's still pumping in at the same speed, and each html jpg page is only around 300k, not too much data considering the size of most web sites.

You can also do it for free with BBEdit, a freeware download. Ask the techs at daz3d and they'll give you a step by step for creating your own MAT files.

I wasn't implying that you are giving away identical product to what I am selling, but it is very similar. I respect your right to do so, but I can't really be happy about it. Like I said though, I wasn't trying to get rich from them and they weren't exactly flying off the shelves. It's not like you've killed off my livelyhood or anything, I'm just making a point basically. Regarding software prices, I agree they are high...but when you factor in the relatively small market share, the R&D costs, distribution, stocking, advertising, overhead, piracy, etc... you can see why they are. Software, like music and video, can be easily duplicated and redistributed for pennies on the dollar. This is the problem with selling digital medium...virtually anyone can make unlimited copies of one disc at little or no cost to themselves. Let's say that everyone who buys a legal copy of Photoshop, then turns around and GIVES it to one other person. That's 50% of Adobe's profit out the window every time they make a sale. Imagine if you could buy a Mercedes, drive it into your garage and five minutes later drive an exact copy out the door...now imagine doing that every five minutes until all your friends had a Mercedes too. Pretty soon Mercedes will either be out of business or coming after you with lawyers. That's what software piracy is like...it's a license to print money, but at someone elses expense. That's why prices are so high. Sharing is fine, but sharing someone else's work without their consent is not, as you said. I look at all my computers and software as investments. I do lots of things for my own enjoyment and artistic expression as well, but it is very satisfying to be able to use the gear to help pay for itself. You made a good point about not wanting other people to make money off your work without your consent. I hope that you include a license agreement with your freebies that implies payment for commercial use? In that sense they are only free until you want to use them to make money. "White Warez" is a term I just made up to describe well intentioned freebies that are very similar to items for sale. Kind of like how Greenpeace is called "white terrorism"...well intentioned, but not always right. It's just an expression, not an accusation. I agree that free stuff is great, I download it all the time...In some ways though I'd rather just pay people up front for their efforts. That way if someone wants to buy something I made with it I don't have to worry about credits and long lost Read Me files with artists names on them. Sometimes it's just cheaper to buy than to have to deal with hurt feelings, threats and/or lawsuits down the line because you forgot to credit or pay someone you got a free model from ten years ago. I've given away lots of free stuff...and free advice and support as well. It just ended up costing me too much so I stopped doing it.

No offense intended Silverblade33, I think it's great when artists give away some of their hard work. It's a nice way to give something back to the community...BUT. I am always confused by people who want to give away the same things other people are selling. It constantly amazes me that someone would spend thousands of dollars on a computer and the software and then just give away the fruits of that investment. For example, I bought the same $20 LunarCell plug-in for my expensive copy of Photoshop from flamingpear.com. I used mine to create product for the Marketplace, paying for the plug-in after a few sales. They don't see huge sales, but a few a month makes me happy. Now you come along...and no offense again, but you are giving away the same thing I am selling. It's nice that you are so generous, but basically you just killed off any future sales of my product. I mean freebies have their place, but not at the expense of merchants. It makes it very hard for us to create and provide quality items for the marketplace when they are constantly being knocked off and given away for free in "white warez" fashion. I think that once the bandwidth charges catch up with your generosity you may decide that giving away so many items costs you too much. From my personal experience, everytime I've put up a freebie it's ended up costing me money in bandwidth overuse. Just not worth it for me to pay for other people's software. Again Silverblade, I'm not scolding, and I'm not angry. I'm just expressing my feelings on the subject. Give away whatever you like and God bless you. Thread: For those that are interested I don't think Nudity should be banned! | Forum: Bryce
I got over the novelty of live nude models in art school. Every week in figure drawing class we had several nude models, both male and female, to sketch for several hours. You eventually become desensitized to the 'naughty bits' and learn to concentrate on the form in light and shadow. I think what we're seeing happen with Poser is that young men (most of whom have never worked with live nude models) are getting a little too excited with the realism of the new Poser models and texture maps. Unlike real models, you don't need to control your inhibitions with Poser. So, young men being young men, they play with the Poser girls the way an 8 year old boy plays with his big sister's Barbie doll when she is away...they undress them and give them a good look over. It's just good old fashioned immature adolescent male behaviour, plain and simple. It's just too bad that they feel the need to post them in the galleries. Or maybe some people are so desperate for gallery hits that they post nudes just so people will look at their work. Either way it's kind of pathetic.

I have no problem with erotic Poser work, as long as it is done well, and so little of it is done well. Hell, very little of the non erotic Poser work is done well for that matter. Either way you're right Vile, there's way too much crap PERIOD in the Poser gallery. It is really becoming the favorite form of public maturbation lately. Nudity really isn't the problem, it's the lack of any other redeeming artistic value that troubles me.

Does that mean you are done cutting, pasting, reformatting, underlining and capitalizing for the day too? I sure hope so. I swear if you spent half the time you spent quoting me on making a real point, you might actually be saying something. You can recycle and rehash everything I say back at me all day. It doesn't mean you are actually making a point. Last time I checked Linux and Unix were PC based platforms, so this is not a Mac vs. PC rant. Windows and Outlook are the real problem, not your PC. They are garbage IN MY OPINION, plain and simple. "unlike Alleycat (who doesn't want to stand by what he/she says), you can quote me on that promise." Uh dude, if you haven't figured out yet that I am a man you really need help with reality. I have quoted you so I hope you keep your promise, and for the record. I stand by everything I say, I just get a little tired of having it underlined, italicized, taken out of context and thrown back in my face like I was in front of a judge. Save your legal dissertations for the courtroom, no one wants to see them here. Least of all me. I couldn't care less what platform or machine anyone else uses. All I was saying was that if you use Mac, Unix or Linux based systems you will not be affected by over 95% of the viruses out there. To me it's a no brainer. Use Windows and Outlook at your own risk...and buy lots of anti-virus software, you'll need it. In fact you can buy mine second hand, CHEAP! I never use it and don't anticipate ever needing it. So relax lil' nukem, no one is 'swiping' at you. Please don't put words in my mouth, it's bad enough that you can't make a point without quoting me and twisting it until it is something for you to flame against. Just once I'd like to see you post a reply where you didn't quote or reference something someone else said. Try forming an original thought for a change, you might like it. ;-)
